  • We have focused on the development of a fiber optic BOTDA (Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analysis) sensor system in order to measure temperature distributed on large structures. Also, we present a feasibility study of the fiber optic sensor to monitor the distributed temperature on a building construction. A fiber optic BOTDA sensor system, which has a capability of measuring the temperature distribution, attempted over several kilometers of long fiber paths. This simple fiber optic sensor system employs a laser diode and two electro-optic modulators. The optical fiber of the length of 1400 m was installed on the surfaces of the building. The change of the distributed temperature on the building construction was well measured by this fiber optic sensor. The temperature changed normally up to 4℃ through one day.

  • We have studied tile detection techniques, which can determine the location and the weight of an intruder into infrastructure, by using fiber-optic ROTDR (Rayleigh optical time domain reflectometry) sensor and fiber-optic BOTDA (Brillouin Optical time domain analysis) sensor, which can use an optical fiber longer than that of ROTDR sensor Fiber-optic sensing plates of ROTDR sensor, which arc buried in sand, were prepared to respond the intruder effects. The signal of ROTDR was analyzed to confirm the detection performance. The constructed ROTDR could be used up to 10km at the pulse width of 30ns. The location error was less than 2 m and the weight could be detected as 4 grades, such as 20kgf, 40kgf, 60kgf and 80kgf. Also, fiber optic BOTDA sensor was developed to be able to detect intrusion effect through an optical fiber of tells of kilometers longer than ROTDR sensor. fiber-optic BOTDA sensor was constructed with 1 laser diode and 2 electro-optic modulators. The intrusion detection experiment was peformed by the strain inducing set-up installed on an optical table to simulate all intrusion effect. In the result of this experiment, the intrusion effort was well detected as the distance resolution of 3m through the fiber length of about 4.81km during 1.5 seconds.

  • A novel method for stabilizing the bias of an Electro-Optic Mach-Zehnder modulator has been proposed and demonstrated to maximize the switching extinction ratio in burst mode packet traffic. By sampling and minimizing the off-level output power of the modulator, a high extinction optical gate switch in obtain regardless of the variation of the packet traffic density.

  • We present a fast-switching electro-optical device based on flexoelectro-optic effect in short pitch cholesterics oriented in uniform lying helix texture. The device has two operating modes: amplitude and phase modulation mode. The amplitude modulation mode is a fast in-plane switching of the device optic axis that enables to achieve a high percent of modulation of the transmitted light intensity whereas the phase mode gives a continuous change of the refractive index and thus of the phase shift of the transmitted light. By using a small concentration of diacrylate monomer and selecting the illumination conditions we have been able to create a inhomogeneous polymeric network mostly localized at both substrate surfaces and stabilize the two switching modes.

  • PRA(Position Reporting Accuracy) for EO/IR(Electro-Optic/Infrared) airborne camera is an important factor in geo-pointing accuracy. Generally, rate table is used to measure PRA of gimbal actuated camera like EO/IR. However, it is not always possible to fix an EUT(Equipment for Under Test) to rate table due to capacity limit of the table on the size and weight of the object(EUT). Our EO/IR is too big and heavy to emplace on it. Therefore, we propose a new verification method of PRA for airborne camera and assess the validity of our proposition. In this method we use collimator, angle measuring instrument, 6 dof motion simulator, optical surface plate, leveling laser, inclinometer and poster(for alignment).

  • We have studied the influence of rubbing directions on electro-optic characteristics of the fringe field driven hybrid aligned nematic liquid crystal (LC) cell by computer simulation. When a LC with positive dielectric anisotropy is used, the results show that the driving voltage and transmittance decreases as the rubbing direction with respect to horizontal electric field direction increases. The reason for decrease in light transmission is the increase of tilt angle on the center of common electrode. In this paper, we have studied how the rubbing angle effects on the transmittance of the cell by investigating a distribution of electric field and LC director.

  • We have studied electro-optic characteristics as a function of pretilt angle ($\theta$$_{p}$) in the fringe-field switching (FFS) mode using the LC with positive dielectric anisotropy. When $\theta$$_{p}$ is increased from 0$^{\circ}$ to 20$^{\circ}$, a maximum transmittance and an operating voltage are obviously decreased. In the viewing angle characteristics, the cell with low pretilt angle has a wide region for the contrast ratio greater than 5 and has a best luminance uniformity. Therefore, in the FFS device, a low pretilt angle is favored for high transmittance and wide viewing angle.gle.

  • The electro-optic Q-switching device for medical high power laser depends on the relation between the population inversion and the Q-switching time. The polarization changes in applied voltage must be experimented to use each $LiNbO_3$ crystal for Q-switching in high power laser.

  • We discuss two possible optical noise sources in an electro-optic camera loaded on a low earth orbit satellite. The first noise source was a reflection at the window for signal rays incident upon the window which is placed before the FPA plane. The second noise source came from a reflection at the surface of the FPA cell when the signal flux is not entirely absorbed. We investigate the noise generation processes for two optical noise sources, and a parametric solution is used to estimate the optical noise effects.

  • We have demonstrated a $Ti:LiNbO_3$ electro-optic electric-field sensor utilizing a $1{\times}2$ Y-fed balanced-bridge Mach-Zehnder interferometric (YBB-MZI) modulator, which uses a 3-dB directional coupler at the output and has two complementary output waveguides. A dc switching voltage of ~25 V and an extinction ratio of ~12.5 dB are observed at a wavelength of $1.3{\mu}m$. For a 20 dBm rf input power, the minimum detectable electric fields are ~8.21, 7.24, and ~13.3 V/m, corresponding to dynamic ranges of ~10, ~12, and ~7 dB at frequencies of 10, 30, and 50 MHz respectively. The sensors exhibit almost linear response for an applied electric-field intensity from 0.29 V/m to 29.8 V/m.
