The presence of transmission congestion may reduce the market size and split the bulk power system into smaller systems. Consequently, this can be a key factor to the increase in market price. This paper analyzes the effect of exercising local market power on the market price, and derives a range of indices which quantify the degree and incentive of local market power through statistical analysis in an electricity market with uniform pricing scheme. The applicability and effectiveness of the derived indices on competitive electricity markets are demonstrated on the Korea electricity market.

Combustion and performance of a spark-ignition engine fueled with propane and butane were analyzed under different compression ratio. The electricity efficiencies of propane and butane increased with increasing the electricity production. The heat release rates of propane and butane were similar at a compression ratio of 9:1 because both fuels had similar optimal ignition timings without knocking combustion. Therefore, the difference in electricity efficiencies of engine generators was insignificant. However, at a higher compression ratio of 11:1, the butane engine generator had a lower electricity efficiency than the propane engine generator because its ignition timing retarded to suppress the knocking combustion.
We investigate the effect of ICT capital on the demands for labor and energy in manufacturing and electricity gas water industries of Korea, US, and UK. Assuming ICT capital, non-ICT capital, labor, electricity, fuel, and material as input factors for manufacturing and ICT capital, non-ICT capital, labor and energy material as input factors for electricity gas water industry, we estimate the Morishima elasticities of substitution. Considering the relative price changes of input factors, ICT capital has substituted labor in manufacturing and electricity water gas industries of the three countries. ICT capital has substituted both electricity and fuel in US and UK manufacturing. Although ICT capital has substituted electricity and fuel each other in Korean manufacturing, ICT capital is unlikely to decrease the demands for electricity and fuel when considering their relative price changes. ICT capital has substituted energy material in electricity gas water industries of the three countries.
Currently, electricity consumption and feedback mechanisms are being widely researched in Internet of Things (IoT) areas to realise power consumption monitoring and management through the remote control of appliances. This paper aims to develop a smart electricity utilisation IoT platform with a deep belief network for electricity utilisation feature modelling. In the end node of electricity utilisation, a smart monitoring and control module is developed for automatically operating air conditioners with a gateway, which connects and controls the appliances through an embedded ZigBee solution. To collect electricity consumption data, a programmable smart IoT gateway is developed to connect an IoT cloud server of smart electricity utilisation via the Internet and report the operational parameters and working states. The cloud platform manages the behaviour planning functions of the energy-saving strategies based on the power consumption features analysed by a deep belief network algorithm, which enables the automatic classification of the electricity utilisation situation. Besides increasing the user's comfort and improving the user's experience, the established feature models provide reliable information and effective control suggestions for power reduction by refining the air conditioner operation habits of each house. In addition, several data visualisation technologies are utilised to present the power consumption datasets intuitively.

The dynamic pricing of electricity, where the electricity rate increases in a time zone with a high demand for electricity is typically applied to a building whose power reception capacity is greater than a certain size. This includes the time of use(TOU) electricity pricing in Korea which can induce the effect of reducing the power demand of a building. Meanwhile, a VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) system that uses electricity is regarded as one of the typical heating and cooling systems along with central air conditioning (central HVAC) for its easy operation and application to the building. Thus, to reduce power energy and operating costs of a building in which the TOU and VRF systems are applied simultaneously, we suggested a control for changing the indoor temperature setting within the thermal comfort range or limiting the rotational speed of an inverter compressor. In this study, to describe the features of the above-mentioned control and verify its effects, we evaluated the results obtained from the analysis of its operation data. Through the actual measurements in winter operations for 73 days since mid- December 2014, we confirmed a reduction of 10.9% in power energy consumption and 12.2% in operating costs by the new control. Also, a reduction of 13.3% in power energy consumption was identified through a regression analysis.
Purpose: To evaluate the economic performance of grid-connected photovoltaic system in residential house, household electricity bill policy of Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) must be applied precisely, and market tendency and uncertainty of system also need to be considered. In this study, to evaluate the economic feasibility of PV system, we measured PV power generation and electricity consumption of six of Green home in Daejeon through web based remote monitoring system. Method: We applied Monte-Carlo simulation based on life cycle cost analysis, to reflect an uncertainty of main factor in economic feasibility evaluation of photovoltaic system. Result: First, with deterministic analysis, the difference of NPV of cumulative financial savings among households varied from -3,310 ~ 24,170 thousand won, portraying notably big range. Also the possibility of getting the same result was 50% when applying uncertainty. Second, the higher electricity consumption is, the more economic feasibility of photovoltaic system increases because KEPCO uses progressive taxation in household electricity bill policy. Third, The contribution to variance of electricity price increases in NPV varied from 98.5% to 99.9%. While the inflation rate and annual degradation contributed very little to none.
Although South Korea experienced a rolling blackout in 2011, the possibility of a blackout in South Korea continues to increase due to rapid electrification. This study examines the problems of energy taxation and price distortions as possible reasons for the rapid electrification in South Korea, which is occurring at a faster rate than in Japan, Europe, and other developed countries. Further, we suggest new energy taxation and price systems designed to normalize electricity prices. In order to do so, we consider two possible scenarios: the first imposes a tax on bituminous coal for electricity generation and the second levies a tax to provide compensation for the potential damages from a nuclear accident. Based on these scenarios, we analyze the effects of a new energy system on electricity price and demand. The results show that a new energy system could guarantee the power generation costs and balance the relative prices between energy sources, and could also help prevent rapid electrification. Therefore, the suggested new energy system is expected to be utilized as a basis for energy policy to decrease the speed of electrification, thus preventing a blackout, and to induce the rational consumption of energy in South Korea.
Introducing the market into the electricity industry lets the multiple participants get into new competition. These multiple participants of the market need new business strategies for providing value added services to customer. Therefore they need the accurate customer information about the electricity demand. Demand characteristic is the most important one for analyzing customer information. In this study load profile data, which can be collected through the Automatic Meter Reading System, are analyzed for getting demand patterns of customer. The load profile data include electricity demand in 15 minutes interval. An algorithm for clustering similar demand patterns is developed using the load profile data. As results of classification, customers are separated into several groups. And the representative curves for the groups are generated. The number of groups is automatically generated. And it depends on the threshold value for distance to separate groups. The demand characteristics of the groups are discussed. Also, the compositions of demand contracts and standard industrial classification in each group are presented. It is expected that the classified curves will be used for tariff design, load forecasting, load management and so on. Also it will be a good infrastructure for making a value added service related to electricity.

A virtual power plant (VPP) technology is a cluster of distributed generation installations. VPP system is that integrates several types of distributed generation sources, so as to give a reliable overall power supply. Virtual power plant systems play a key role in the smart grids concept and the move towards alternative sources of energy. They ensure improved integration of the renewable energy generation into the grids and the electricity market. VPPs not only deal with the supply side, but also help manage demand and ensure reliability of grid functions through demand response (DR) and other load shifting approaches in real time. In this paper, utilizing a variety of distributed generation resources(such as emergency generator, commercial generator, energy storage device), activation scheme of the virtual power plant technology. In addition, through the analysis of the domestic electricity market, it describes a scheme that can be a virtual power plant to participate in electricity market. It attempts to derive the policy support recommendation in order to obtain the basics to the prepared in position of power generation companies for the commercialization of virtual power plant.
