Purpose The purpose of this study is to design a regional electricity planning model rather than the existing single region ones and verify its usefulness. The regional electricity planning model is to determine both electricity distribution among regions and power plant planning at the same time satisfying regional demands and distribution networks. Design/methodology/approach This study made a regional electricity planning model by integrating power plant planning and electricity distribution among regions. The regional electricity planning model is formulated into a linear programming problem, and coded and run using the OSeMOSYS, one of open source energy systems. Findings According to the empirical analysis result, this study confirmed that the regional electricity planning model proposed in this study deducts the unfairness among regions in view of electricity and green house gas. In addition, the model is expected to be used in evaluating and developing the national policies concerning fine dust and/or green house gas.
In this paper, we constitute H/W systems for the accurate control of DC servo motor. This H/W systems are designed by applying a simple genetic algorithm (SGA) to the robust $H_{\infty}$ control system and the intelligent Fuzzy control system of DC motor, respectively. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed systems, the characteristics of this systems are analysed and simulated.

Building-integrated photovoltaic(BIPV) systems can operate as a multi-functional building components, which generates electricity and serves as part of building envelope. It can be regarded as a new architectural elements, adding to the building's aesthetics. Besides of these benefits, the application of PV systems into school buildings tends to play an important role in energy education to students. In this context, this study aims to analyse the applicability of PV systems into school buildings. For an existing school building, four types of BIPV designs were developed; rooftops, wall-attached, wall-mounted with angle, and sunshading device. Based on energy modeling of those BIPV systems, the whole 60.1kWp rated PV installation is expected to yield about 65.6MWh of electricity, that is about 50% more than the annual electricity consumption of the school, 44MWh. It was also found that the applicability of the PV systems into the school building was very high, and the rooftop systems with the optimized angle was the most efficient in energy production, followed by sunshading, wall-mounted with angle and wall-attached. It concludes that school buildings have a reasonable potential to apply PV systems in the aspects of building elements and electricity production.

Power TAC (Power Trading Agent Competition) is an agent-based simulation for competitions between electricity brokering agents on the smart grid. To win the competition, agents obtain electricity from the electricity wholesale market among the power plants. In this operation, a key to success is balancing the demand of the customer and the supply from the plants because any imbalance results in a significant penalty to the brokering agent. Given the bidding on the wholesale market requires the price and the quantity on the electricity, this paper proposes four different price estimation strategies: exponentially moving average, linear regression, fuzzy logic, and support vector regression. Our evaluations with the competition simulation show which strategy is better than which, and which strategy wins in the free-for-all situations. This result is a crucial component in designing an electricity brokering agent in both Power TAC and the real world.

Korea electric power industry had been under vertical monopoly but is typically getting restructured for free competition. An ideal pricing system under the competitive market system is 'unbundled pricing system' and 'marginal pricing system', but the current pricing system still adheres to the traditional bundled system and the average cost pricing system. Especially, progressive electricity rates for residential use reflect governmental policy-making which is focused on income redistribution & welfare, industrial supports and energy saving. This study proposes new and reasonable residential electricity pricing systems which are Time-Of-Use (TOU) and Real-Time Pricing (RTP) to reflect variations in the wholesale price of electricity. It also presents examples of various tariffs for residential electricity pricing systems.

Recently, the amount of electrical heat pump(EHP), a electrical conditioning equipment, is sharply increasing due to the luxury and multi-story trend of building. Accordingly, the cooling load that occupying substantial part of summer electric consumption has increased dramatically, making difficulties in domestic supply of electricity in summer. There are some efforts to replace it with an alternative cooling equipment such as gas heat pump(GHP), a gas cooling equipment, in order to solve the problem of summer electricity supply through reducing the summer electricity peak. It is rare, however, to find studies on the actual effects of GHP on the reduction of summer electricity peak. This study, therefore, estimated the effects of the GHP on the summer electricity peak by the gas consumption and characteristics of gas cooling systems. In addition, electric substitution effects by gas cooling systems were analyzed through case studies in the summer of 2010.
Electroluminescent Display(ELD) will be the innovative ideas to replace existed electricity illumination systems that consider to under effectiveness and environmental pollution generators in the commercial caves because ELD has less heat and low electricity consumption by the new illumination materials. Characteristics of the ELD are as following: it is a proper matter for the small merchandise ads due to its thickness is only below 3oo micoron, electricity consumption of ELD is less (1/3) than LED, ELD that is a whole face illumination system is much brighter than LED that is a dot illumination system, ELD is longer life than others due to its less light generation systems, ELD is any problems to bend, and it is a best device to use a light board ads. ELD has advantages on conservation of cave biosystems and reduce pollution when ELD is installed in touring spots and emergency corridors of weak illuminated cave internal areas by less heating and low electricity consumption using the indirect illumination of the ELD. Therefore when the high technologic ELD is installed in the commercial caves in Korea, it will be innovating cave environmental systems, saving budgets, and increasing tours.

There has been a significant growth in global population and industrialization, as a consequence demand for electricity is increasing rapidly and the power systems need to increase the electricity generation. Currently, most of generated electricity is generated from fossil fuels. However, there are many financial and environmental concerns associated with the generation of electricity from such resource. Photovoltaic )PV) solar as a renewable resource is promising. The power output of PV systems is mainly affected by the solar irradiation and ambient temperature. This paper attempts at reducing the burden and improving the accuracy of the extensive simulations related to integrating PV systems into the electrical grid.
Nepal has huge potential of hydro and other renewable energy resources including solar energy. However, only 70% of the total population have access to electricity despite the long history of hydropower development in the country. Still more than 37% population in rural areas and around 73% population in Karnali Province, one of the least developed provinces, are living without access to electricity despite taking several initiatives and implementing various policies by government supporting electrification in off-grid rural areas. Government together with donors and private sector has extensively been promoting the off-grid solar photovoltaic (PV) echnology in un-electrified areas to increase electricity access. So far, more than 900,000 households in rural areas of Nepal are getting electricity from stand-alone solar PV systems. However, there are many challenges including financial, technical, institutional, and governance barriers in Nepal. This study based on extensive review of literatures and author's own long working experiences in renewable energy sector in Nepal, shares the best practices and lessons of off-grid solar PV for increasing access to electricity in rural areas of Nepal. This study suggests that flexible financial instruments, financial innovations, bundling of PV systems for concentrating energy loads, adopting standards process, local capacity building, and combination of technology, financing and institutional aspects are a key for enhancing effectiveness of solar PV technology in rural areas of Nepal.

This paper presnts a controller for the heat capacity of thermal storage systems using off-peak electricity which is composed of an identifier using neural networks and a storage time adjuster in order to store exactly the required thermal energy without loss. Since thermal storage systems have nonlinear characteristics and large time constant, even if we predict the heating load accurately, it is very difficult to store exactly the required thermal energy. Thus, in the neural network for the identifier, the adaptive learning rate for high learning speed and bit inputs based on state changes of thermal storage power source are used. Also a hardware for the controller using a microprocessor is developed. The performance of the proposed controller is shown by experiment.
