Nowadays, in islands where electricity should be provided autonomously, stand-alone microgrid technologies using renewable energy such as sunlight generation and wind power generation come into wide use. The microgrid electricity generation using renewable energy is greatly affected by the natural environment of a site. In order to maintain stable electricity supply for fluctuating electricity generation due to natural environment, the energy management via EMS is positively necessary. In existing stand-alone microgrid EMS, system operation logic is not changeable flexibly because compiled or builded codes are released into the EMS of a site, respectively. In this paper, we designed a flexible operating script-based microgrid EMS Framework for various sites and applied it to some island sites. We could confirm its usability.

The production of electricity and the pattern of consumption in competitive electricity market are changing. The price of electric power in spot market will be varied by the economic electricity availability of generation utilities and electricity consumers. DSM(demand-side management) is a method which provides simultaneously economics to utilities and consumers as main participants in electricity market. In this paper, it is argued that the effect of DSM in competitive electricity market for consumers, generation utilities, and transmission utilities.

Competition among electric generation companies is a major goal of restructuring in the electricity industry. In electricity market, a huge volume of commodities will be traded through competitive bidding. The choice between uniform and pay-as-bid pricing for electricity auction has been one of most important issues in deregulated electricity market. This paper proposes a constrained Bertrand model for analyzing the electricity auction market of price competition model. The issue of the two pricing rules of uniform and pay-as-bid is studied from the viewpoint of consumer's benefit. This paper also shows that transmission congestion depends on the pricing mechanism. Pay-as-bid pricing gives less possibility of transmission congestion by price competition, and less burden to consumers in the simulation results.
This paper Introduces the concept of the generation cost of generating utilities and its calculation methods. Also, the economic evaluation method using generation cost which is called as a screening curve method will be presented along with the benefits and disadvantages of this concept. Next, the least-cost electric utility planning techniques which is used very widely in many countries will be Introduced In comparison with screening curve method. In this aspects, the optimal dynamic mix can be determined as a result. By comparing these two concepts, we will get the concrete concept why the economic evaluation method using generation cost can not be used for the future generation expansion planning.
The vertically integrated power industry was divided into six generation companies and one market operator, where electricity trading was launched at power exchange. In this environment, the profits of each generation companies are guaranteed according to utilization of their own generation equipments. Especially, the electricity demand shows seasonal and weekly regular pattern, which the some capacity should be provided into ancillary service based on the past demand forecasting error and operating results of electricity market. Namely, if generation cost function is applied to SMP and BLMP as announced the previous day, the available generation capacity of the following day could be optimally distributed, and therefore contract capacity of ancillary service applied to CBP(Cost Based Pool) and TWBP(Two-Way Bidding Pool) is determined. Consequently, it is Possible to use the retained equipments optimally. This paper represents on efficient bidding strategies for generation equipments through the calculation of the contract and the application of each generator cost function based on the past demand forecasting error and market operating data.

The quench voltage of the second-generation superconducting wire is affected by the resistivity characteristics of the stabilization layer. The specific resistance of the stabilization layer can be changed by the deposition process using RF magnetron sputtering. In this paper, a thin film made of a homogeneous material (Ag) and a dissimilar material (Cu) was deposited on the stabilization layer of the second-generation superconducting wire through RF magnetron sputtering. We found that the specific resistance was reduced by increasing the thickness of the stabilization layer. The reduction in the resistivity of the stabilization layer led to a decrease in the quench voltage of the second-generation superconducting wire. We suggest that various characteristic changes of the second-generation superconducting wire can be expected through the successful change in the resistivity of the stabilization layer of the proposed deposition process.
This paper analyzes the effects of nuclear power generation on industrial growth in using the data of 22 manufacturing sectors in 14 nuclear power countries. The hypothesis that the change in the proportion of nuclear power generation in total electricity generation affects industrial value-added and industrial output through industrial electricity price reduction was tested using the dynamic panel data model. First, it was estimated that the increase in nuclear power generation by a 1% leads to a 0.8% reduction in electricity price. The results indicate that when nuclear power generation increased by a 1% point, industrial value-added and output increased by 0.16% and 0.23%,respectively, in the short-run and by 0.51% and 0.85%, respectively, in the long-run. It was also inferred that the effect of nuclear generation on industrial competitiveness working through electricity price reduction rely on institutional settings in the electricity markets. That is, the competitive effect is greater in the countries such as U.K and Japan where electricity price is high and price volatility is large. Meanwhile, in Germany which has pursued phasing out nuclear power, industrial competitiveness is promoted through stable electricity supply.
In this paper, a new probabilistic generation modeling method which can address the characteristics of changed electricity industry is proposed. The major contribution of this paper can be captured in the development of a probabilistic generation modeling considering generator maintenance outage and in the classification of market demand into multiple demand clusters for the applications to electricity markets. Conventional forced outage rates of generators are conceptually combined with maintenance outage of generators and, consequently, effective outage rates of generators are new iy defined in order to properly address the probabilistic characteristic of generation in electricity markets. Then, original market demands are classified into several distinct demand clusters, which are defined by the effective outage rates of generators and by the inherent characteristic of the original demand. We have found that generators have different effective outage rates values at each classified demand cluster, depending on the market situation. From this, therefore, it can be seen that electricity markets can also be classified into several groups which show similar patterns and that the fundamental characteristics of power systems can be more efficiently analyzed in electricity markets perspectives, for this classification can be widely applicable to other technical problems in power systems such as generation scheduling, power flow analysis, price forecasts, and so on.
Generation of electricity using wind power has received considerable attention worldwide in recent years mainly due to its minimal environmental impact. However, volatility of wind power production causes additional problems to provide reliable electricity to an electrical grid regarding power system operations, power system planning, and wind farm operations. Those problems require appropriate stochastic models for the electricity generation output of wind power. In this study, we review previous literatures for developing the stochastic model for the wind power generation, and propose a systematic procedure for developing a stochastic model. This procedure shows a way to build an ARIMA model of volatile wind power generation using historical data, and we suggest some important considerations. In addition, we apply this procedure into a case study for a wind farm in the Republic of Korea, Shinan wind farm, and shows that our proposed model is helpful for capturing the volatility of wind power generation.
A life cycle assessment(LCA) is increasing its applicability as a powerful tool for an environmental burdens analysis. In this study, some cases are compared in terms of analysis procedures and results obtained with LCAs for evaluating power generation technologies in Korea. For the comparison, 3 power generation technologies are selected because they produces almost 90% of 2003 total electricity generation in Korea. It is shown that the range of evaluation values amounts to maximally the order of about 105, which is rather large discrepancy than the level of 101 in comparison with foreign studies. The difference seems to be due to the simplicity of modeling used in each case study. It is proposed that this large discrepancy should be obviously clarified to improve their reliability in that electricity is a essentialness for all industries and the capacity of LCA of national-level electricity affects the results of LCA for the other sectors.
