  • Recently, the safety of chemical substances has gained attention due to incidents occurring in petrochemical industrial complexes, such as gas leaks and fires. In particular, industrial complexes in Ulsan and Yeosu (South Korea) are valuable as they significantly contribute to the petrochemical industry, but accidents may occur due to chemical leakage. Therefore, in this study, sensor nodes are configured at an interval of 20 [m] based on outdoor facilities standards to respond to chemical accidents, and exposure consideration of 8 h (TWA) and 15 min (STEL) are proposed in TLVs. The proposed system pre-processes data collected in multi-hop communication at a cycle of 0.6-0.75 [s] using Python and stores it in the MySQL database through SQL and a real-time remote monitoring system that updates the stored data once every 5 s is implemented by linking MySQL and Grafana.

  • Objectives: The aims of this study are to investigate how X-rays are emitted to surrounding parts during the ion implantation process, to analyze these emissions in relation to the properties of the ion implanter equipment, and to estimate the resulting exposure dose. Eight ion implanters equipped with high-voltage electrical systems were selected for this study. Methods: We monitored X-ray emissions at three locations outside of the ion implanters: the accelerator equipped with a high-voltage energy generator, the impurity ion source, and the beam line. We used a Personal Portable Dose Rate and Survey Meter to monitor real-time X-ray levels. The SX-2R probe, an X-ray Features probe designed for use with the RadiagemTM meter, was also utilized to monitor lower ranges of X-ray emissions. The counts per second (CPS) measured by the meter were estimated and then converted to a radiation dose (𝜇Sv/hr) based on a validated calibration graph between CPS and μGy/hr. Results: X-rays from seven ion implanters were consistently detected in high-voltage accelerator gaps, regardless of their proximity. X-rays specifically emanated from three ion implanters situated in the ion box gap and were also found in the beam lines of two ion implanters. The intensity of these X-rays did not show a clear pattern relative to the devices' age and electric properties, and notably, it decreased as the distance from the device increased. Conclusions: In conclusion, every gap, in which three components of the ion implanter devices were divided, was found to be insufficiently shielded against X-ray emissions, even though the exposure levels were not estimated to be higher than the threshold.

  • Among various types of harmful gases, hydrogen sulfide is a strong toxic gas that is mainly generated during spillage and wastewater treatment at industrial sites. Hydrogen sulfide can irritate the conjunctiva even at low concentrations of less than 10 ppm, cause coughing, paralysis of smell and respiratory failure at a concentration of 100 ppm, and coma and permanent brain loss at concentrations above 1000 ppm. Therefore, rapid detection of hydrogen sulfide among harmful gases is extremely important for our safety, health, and comfortable living environment. Most hydrogen sulfide gas sensors that have been reported are electrical resistive metal oxide-based semiconductor gas sensors that are easy to manufacture and mass-produce and have the advantage of high sensitivity; however, they have low gas selectivity. In contrast, the electrochemical sensor measures the concentration of hydrogen sulfide using an electrochemical reaction between hydrogen sulfide, an electrode, and an electrolyte. Electrochemical sensors have various advantages, including sensitivity, selectivity, fast response time, and the ability to measure room temperature. However, most electrochemical hydrogen sulfide gas sensors depend on imports. Although domestic technologies and products exist, more research is required on their long-term stability and reliability. Therefore, this study includes the processes from electrode material synthesis to sensor fabrication and characteristic evaluation, and introduces the sensor structure design and material selection to improve the sensitivity and selectivity of the sensor. A sensor case was fabricated using a 3D printer, and an Ag reference electrode, and a Pt counter electrode were deposited and applied to a Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) filter using PVD. The working electrode was also deposited on a PTFE filter using vacuum filtration, and an electrochemical hydrogen sulfide gas sensor capable of measuring concentrations as low as 0.6 ppm was developed.

  • It is essential to precisely evaluate the expected dose (collective dose) before performing high-exposure tasks in nuclear power plants because those have a high potential to cause significant radiation exposure to workers. A dose evaluation method is to design the scenarios of high-exposure tasks using computational codes, which allows for the calculation of the expected collective dose. Although these computational scenarios are useful for estimating the expected radiation dose and establishing radiation protection plans, the calculated doses may not perfectly match the actual doses that workers receive during tasks due to differences between the scenario and the actual circumstances in the radiation fields. Therefore, this study presents a methodology for calculating correction factors to improve the accuracy of dose predictions from computational scenarios. This approach aims to make the predicted collective dose before the task closer to the actual dose received by workers, thereby enhancing radiation safety for personnel performing high-exposure tasks. Additionally, these correction factors will help accurately predict doses under various working conditions in the future, contributing to minimizing radiation exposure risks for nuclear power plant workers.

  • The early detection of hydrogen gas leaks is crucial because of their high explosion risk. Current oxide-semiconductor-based hydrogen sensors are reliant on electrical circuits that may fail during accidents and require high temperatures, thereby raising safety concerns. Thus, there is an urgent need for the development of simpler and more intuitive sensors that can operate at room temperature. This study proposed a hydrogen sensor based on Pd-MoO3 nanowires. The sensor exhibited a visible color change upon exposure to hydrogen at room temperature. The Pd-MoO3 nanowires were synthesized by decorating the surface of hydrothermally produced MoO3 nanowires with 1-5 wt.% Pd. Upon exposure to 5% hydrogen gas at room temperature, all Pd-MoO3 nanowires exhibited distinct color changes (∆E). In particular, the MoO3 nanowires with 3 wt.% Pd (3Pd-MoO3) yielded an exceptionally high ∆E value of over 15 within 10 min. Further, the 3Pd-MoO3 nanowires exhibited a noticeable color change (∆E > 1.6) within 2 min, demonstrating their potential for highly sensitive and rapid hydrogen detection. The outstanding color change of the 3Pd-MoO3 nanowires was attributed to valence changes in both Mo (Mo6+ and Mo5+) and Pd (Pd2+ and Pd0) upon exposure to hydrogen.

  • In this paper, we propose a driver condition monitoring system using FMCW in-cabin radar, which is free from wearing inconvenience and privacy issues. Using 77GHz high-precision radar, the system detects changes in eye blinking patterns according to changes in the driving environment and the driver's condition using an adaptive multiple filtering algorithm, and accurately determines drowsy driving by measuring the number of eye blinks and the time it takes to open and close the eyes through the detected data. With the emergence of high-performance radars that are becoming more and more miniaturized, it is possible to embed them in the instrument panel or rearview mirror of the vehicle, and if the driver is judged to be drowsy, it can wake up the driver through an alarm or interlock with the vehicle's driving system to slow down and make an emergency stop to prevent accidents and promote driver safety.

  • Physical security has always been an extremely important facet within the security arena. A comprehensive security plan consists of three components of physical security, personal security and information security. These elements are interrelated and may exist in varying degrees defending on the type of enterprise or facility being protected. The physical security component of a comprehensive security program is usually composed of policies and procedures, personal, barriers, equipment and records. Human beings kept restless struggle to preserve their and tribal lives. However, humans in prehistoric ages did not learn how to build strong house and how to fortify their residence, so they relied on their protection to the nature and use caves as protection and refuge in cold days. Through the history of man, human has been establishing various protection methods to protect himself and his tribe's life and assets. Physical security methods are set in the base of these security methods. Those caves that primitive men resided was rounded with rock wall except entrance, so safety was guaranteed especially by protection for tribes in all directions. The Great Wall of China that is considered as the longest building in the history was built over one hundred years from about B.C. 400 to prevent the invasion of northern tribes, but this wall enhanced its protection function to small invasions only, and Mongolian army captured the most part of China across this wall by about 1200 A.D. European lords in the Middle Ages built a moat by digging around of castle or reinforced around of the castle by making bascule bridge, and provided these protections to the resident and received agricultural products cultivated. Edwin Holmes of USA in 20 centuries started to provide innovative electric alarm service to the development of the security industry in USA. This is the first of today's electrical security system, and with developments, the security system that combined various electrical security system to the relevant facilities takes charging most parts of today's security market. Like above, humankind established various protection methods to keep life in the beginning and its development continues. Today, modern people installed CCTV to the most facilities all over the country to cope with various social pathological phenomenon and to protect life and assets, so daily life of people are protected and observed. Most of these physical security systems are installed to guarantee our safety but we pay all expenses for these also. Therefore, establishing effective physical security system is very important and urgent problem. On this study, it is suggested methods of establishing effective physical security system by using system integration on the principle of security design about effective security system's effective establishing method of physical security system that is increasing rapidly by needs of modern society.

  • The safety diagnosis of cultural assets is Primarily focused on its non-destructiveness. Research on the nondestructive diagnosis and conservation of masonry cultural heritage is the key which is considered by technologic kernel. Geophyscial Prospecting as nondestructive diagnostic technology plays an important role in the characterization of the foundation of stone pagodas. It is natural that understanding of shallow subsurface condition beneath them is essential for their structural safety diagnosis. As an example, the nondestructive geophysical methods were applied to two three-story stone pagodas, Seokgatap (height 10.8 m, width 4.4 m, weight 82.3 ton) and Dabotap (height 10.4 m, width 7.4 m, weight 123.2 ton) which were built in 791 at Bulkuksa temple. An earlier archaeological investigation shows that stone pagodas have experienced severe weathering process and are slightly leaning, which will threaten their stability At the base part of Dabotap, an offset of the stone alignment is also observed. Direct measurements of ultrasonic velocities was introduced for the mechanical properties of the stone The velocity ranges of ultrasonic waves for Dabotap and Seokgatap are 1217${\~}$4403 m/s and 584${\~}$5845 m/s, respectively, and the estimated averages of the uniaxial compressive strength are 463 kg/$cm^2$ and 409 kg/$cm^2$, respectively. Site characteristics, around the pagodas are determined by the measurement of multiple properties such as seismic velocity, resistivity, image of ground-penetrating radar, On the basis of the higher velocity structure, the site of Seokgatap appears to have solider stability than the Seokgatap site. Near the pagodas, higher(up to 2200 $\Omega$m) resistivity is present whereas their outskirts have as low as 200 $\Omega$m. By the combined results of each geophyscial methods, the subsurface boundaries of two stone pagodas are revealed. The Dabotap site is in the form of an octagon having 6-m-long side with the depth of ${\~}$4 m, whereas the Seokgatap site is the 8 ${\times}$ 10 m rectangle with the depth of 3 m. These subsurface structures appear to reflect the original foundations constructed against the stone load of ${\~}8 ton/m^2$. At the subsurface beneath the northeast of each pagoda, low seismic velocity as well as low resistivity is prominent. It is interpreted to represent the weak underground condition which Is the possible cause of the slightly leaning pagodas toward the NNW.
