Corrosion Monitoring for Protected Systems using Thin-Film Electrical Resistance (TFER) Sensor

  • This study has been conducted to monitor the corrosion rate of cathodically protected structure and corrosion inhibited system using multi-line thin-film electrical resistance (TFER) sensor in various environments. The field test data of TFER sensor for the corrosion monitoring of cathodically protected underground pipeline in soil environments and of corrosion inhibited gas heaters were also presented. The sensor was found to be a powerful method to commit the sensitive pick-up of small corrosion rate which can be observed in the cathodically protected and corrosion inhibited systems.

  • The accurate measurement of soil resistivity and earthing system resistance is fundamental to electrical safety. However, geological and meterological factors can have a considerable effect on the accuracy of conventional measurements and the validity of the measurement methods.   • The objective of this research was to develop a practical integrated approach using extracted features from electrical resistance measurements and coupled electromechanical models of damage, for in-situ damage detection and sensing in carbon fiber reinforced plastic(CFRP) composites. To achieve this objective, we introduced specific known damage (in terms of type, size, and location) into CFRP laminates and established quantitative relationships with the electrical resistance measurements. For processing of numerous measurement data, an autonomous data acquisition system was devised. We also established a specimen preparation procedure and a method for electrode setup. Coupon and panel CFRP laminate specimens with several known damage were tested. Coupon specimens with various sizes of artificial delaminations obtained by inserting Teflon film were manufactured and the resistance was measured. The measurement results showed that increase of delamination size led to increase of resistance implying that it is possible to sense the existence and size of delamination. A quasi-isotropic panel was manufactured and electrical resistance was measured. Then three different sizes of holes were drilled at a chosen location. The panel was prepared using the established procedures with six electrode connections on each side making a total of twenty-four electrodes. Vertical, horizontal, and diagonal pairs of electrodes were chosen and the resistance was measured. The measurement results showed the possibility of the established measurement system for an in-situ damage detection method for CFRP composite structures.

  • Electrolytic capacitors have been widely used in power electronics system because of the features of large capacitance, small size, high-voltage, and low-cost. Electrolytic capacitors, which is most of the time affected by aging effect, plays a very important role for the power electronics system quality and reliability. Therefore it is important to estimate the parameter of an electrolytic capacitor to predict the failure. This paper proposed a novel fault diagnosis method of an electrolytic capacitor used for voltage smoothing in boost DC converter. The equivalent series resistance(ESR) of electrolytic capacitor estimated from FFT result of filtered waveform of capacitor voltage/current. Main advantage of the proposed method include circuit simplicity and easy implementation. Simulation and experimental results are shown to verify the performance of the proposed method.

Therefore it is important to estimate the parameter of an electrolytic capacitor to predict the failure. The estimation of the equivalent series resistance(ESR) is important parameter in life condition monitoring of electrolytic capacitor. This paper proposes a simple technique to measure the ESR of an electrolytic capacitor. This method uses a switching DC/DC boost converter to measure the DC Bus capacitor ESR of power converter. Main advantage of the proposed method is very simple in technique, consumes very little time and requires only simple instruments. Simulation results are shown to verify the performance of the proposed method.

Interfacial Control of Multi-functional CNT and ITO/PET Nanocomposites having Self-Sensing and Transparency (자체-감지능 및 광투과도를 지닌 CNT 및 ITO/PET 다기능성 나노복합소재의 계면 조절 연구)

  • Transparent and conductive carbon nanotube on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) were prepared by dip-coating method for self-sensing multi-functional nanocomposites. The changes in the electrical and optical properties of CNT coating mainly depended on the number of dip-coating, concentration of CNT solution. Consequently, the surface resistance and transmittance of CNT coating were sensitively controlled by the processing parameters. Surface resistance of CNT coating was measured using four-point method, and surface resistance of coated CNT could be better calculated by using the dual configuration method. Optical transmittance of PET film with CNT coating was evaluated using UV spectrum. Surface properties of coated CNT investigated by wettability test via static and dynamic contact angle measurement were consistent with each other. As dip-coating number increased, surface resistance of coated CNT decreased seriously, whereas the transmittance exhibited little lower due to the thicker CNT networks layer. Interfacial microfailure properties were investigated for CNT and indium tin oxide (ITO) coatings on PET substrates by electrical resistance measurement under cyclic loading fatigue test. CNT with high aspect ratio exhibited no change in surface resistance up to 2000 cyclic loading, whereas ITO with brittle nature showed a linear increase of surface resistance up to 1000 cyclic loading and then exhibited the level-off due to reduced electrical contact points based on occurrence of many micro-cracks.

  • This paper proposes an on-line estimation algorithm of internal resistance of Li-ion battery based on the recursive least squares method to prevent the overvoltage and undervoltage casing degradation of life cycle of battery. An equivalent circuit model with single time constant is adopted, and under assumptions that the terminal voltage, current and SOC are measured accurately, the discrete time based nonlinear equation of the model can be converted to the linear equation which can be applied to recursive least squares method. Since the coefficients of the discrete time linear equation can be expressed by the parameters of the equivalent circuit model, it is shown that an internal resistance (Ri) can be estimated in real time using the least square method.

  • In this pacer, The effect of the impedances in SNOSEFT s memory devices has been developed. The effect of source and drain impedances are measuring using the method of the field effect bias resistance in the inner resistance regions of the device structure and external bias resistance. The effect of impedance by source and drain resistance shows according to increasing to the storage of memory charges, shows according to a function of decreasing to the gate voltages, shows the delay of threshold voltages, The delay time of low conductance state and high conductance state by the impedance effect shows 3 [${\mu}$sec] and 1[${\mu}$sec] respectively.

  • This paper, we proposed the theoretical model which includes series resistance $R_s$ and shunt resistance $R_{sh}$ of single-crystalline PV module and used numerical method based on physics. Series resistance $R_s$ was derived from approach for p-n junction diode instead of established form obtained from the simulator with irradiance changes. Electrical output characteristics for PV modules to count the effect of $R_s$ were then studied. Finally simulation results were compared to experimental data leading to good agreement.

  • In this paper, 'lifetime-temperature rise model' based on the 'lifetime-resistance model' is theoretically Proposed, in order to find out the evaluation method of degradation and the residual lifetime by use of infrared image camera for electric connections/contacts. Two assumptions have been builded up for the 'lifetime-temperature rise model': one is associated with the linear relationship between the temperature ism ΔK and contact resistance, and the other the functional relationship between the temperature of electric connections/contacts and the operating time presenting in the 'lifetime-resistance model'. To prove the proposed model, experiments have been performed for various electric connections/contacts. From the experimental results, measured values were quite similar to the calculated values, which proved the above-mentioned two assumptions. Therefore, by use of 'lifetime-temperature rise model', it is possible to estimate the trend of degradation and the residual lifetime for electric connections/contacts through the temperature measurements .
