  • It is well known that on-site corona and various noises make severe problems on the PD(partial discharge) measurement. In this paper, for the improvement of the on-site PD measuring performance, the applicability of TF(Time-Frequency) map was investigated. For the purpose, PDs that can be generated from the defect in the power cables as well as corona discharges and ground noises were measured. And through the TF analysis for the measured data, we have tried to distinguish the real PDs, corona discharges and noises. As a result, it is confirmed that the data of PDs can be clustered themselves separable from other data such as corona and noises on the TF map.

  • The conducted noises mainly emitted from PWM DC power supply have a periodicity with respect to switching frequency, and especially center at the switching frequency and the discrete harmonic frequencies. The concentration of noise energy at these discrete frequencies makes it harder to meet EMI regulations. To reduce the conducted noises, this paper presents the novel FM-PWM control method by using random switching frequency modulation control. This control makes it to generate the noises of side bands by shattering emission spectrum, and to reduce the peak level of conducted noises.

  • Electrical noises like self potential, burst noises and 60-Hz electrical noises are one of the causes to reduce reliability of electrical resistivity survey. Even the PDC-R (Pseudo DC resisitivity) technique, recently developed, is suffering from the problem of low reliability due to electrical noises. That is, both DC-based and AC-based resistivity technique is subject to reliability problem due to electrical noises embedded in urban geotechnical sites. In this research, a new technique to enhance reliability of the PDC-R technique by minimizing influence of electrical noises was proposed. In addition, an automated procedure was also proposed to facilitate data analysis and interpretation of PDC-R measurements. The proposed technique is composed of two steps: 1. to extract information only related with the input current by means of multiple-filter technique, and 2. to undertake a task to sort out signal information only to show stable and reliable characteristics. This automated procedure was verified by a synthetic harmonic wave including DC shift, burst random noises and 60-Hz electrical noises. Also the procedure was applied to site investigation at urban areas for proving its feasibility and accuracy.

  • This paper presents a new approach to improve the signal to noise ratio (SNR) for local seismic disaster preventing system in densely populated area. The seismic data measured in the local site includes various sensing noises (offset or measurement noise) and man-made/natural noises (road and rail traffic noise, rotating or hammering machinery noise, human activity noise such as walking and running, wind/atmospheric pressure-generated noise, etc.). These additive noises are different in time and frequency characters. The proposed method uses 3-stages processing to reduce these different additive noises. In the first stage, misalignment offset noise are diminished by time average processing, and then the second and third stages, coherent/incoherent noises such as man-made/natural noises are suppressed by array stacking. In addition, we derived the theoretical equation of the SNR gain improved by the proposed method. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, computer simulations were performed with real seismic data and test equipment generated data as the input.

  • The problem of identification of continuous systems is considered when both the discrete input and output measurements are contaminated by white noises. Using a predesigned digital low-pass filter, a discrete-time estimation model is constructed easily without direct approximations of system signal derivatives from sampled data. If the pass-band of the filter is designed so that it includes the main frequencies of both the system input and output signals in some range, the noise effects are sufficiently reduced, accurate estimates can be obtained by least squares(LS) algorithm in the presence of low measurement noises. Two classes of filters(infinite impulse response(IIR) filter and finite impulse response(FIR) filter) are employed. The former requires less computational burden and memory than the latter while the latter is suitable for the bias compensated least squares(BCLS) method, which compensates the bias of the LS estimate by the estimates of the input-output noise variances and thus yields unbiased estimates in the presence of high noises.

  • The corona in oil, the surface discharge in oil, the void discharge which could be in a transformer were imitated by using three electrodes with different shapes and the frequency bands of each ultrasonic signal were measured. After emitting artificial noises toward the transformer, only ultrasonic signals were extracted by frequency filtering, from the ultrasonic signals with noises at partial discharge. As a result, it was confirmed that the ultrasonic signals due to the corona in oil, the surface discharge in oil, the void discharge could be distinguished from the noises.

  • In wireless sensor network (WSN) environments, environmental noises are generated by, for example, small passing animals, crickets chirping or foliage blowing and will interfere target detection if the noises are higher than the sensor threshold value. For accurate tracking by acoustic WSNs, these environmental noises should be filtered out before initiating track. This paper presents the effect of environmental noises on target tracking and proposes a new algorithm for the noise mitigation in acoustic WSNs. We find that our noise mitigation algorithm works well even for targets with sensing range shorter than the sensor separation as well as with longer sensing ranges. It is also found that noise duration at each sensor affects the performance of the algorithm. A detection algorithm is also presented to account for the Doppler effect which is an important consideration for tracking higher-speed ground targets. For tracking, we use the weighted sensor position centroid to represent the target position measurement and use the Kalman filter (KF) for tracking.

  • To detect partial discharge of 154kV joint box, we have made experiment by using the Al-foil electrode sensor. Generally the signals which are detected in partial discharge test of underground power transmission cable are accompanied with both noises of high voltage and noises of surrounding power cable. The most noise in near to end part of joint box is corona, beside other noises flowed from surrounding area. Partial discharge test is difficulty due to these noises. First, we had used Al-Foil sensor on middle joint box of 154[kV] underground transmission power cable, and then analysed reliability of calibration signal by using the Al-Foil electrode sensor of NJB. From above results, decrement properties measured highly. But incase of injecting calibration signal of 500[pC] after measuring signals in IJB, the S/N ratio had about 25[dB] acquisition.

  • In the process of the acquisition, storage, transmission of signals, noises are generated by various causes and the degradation phenomenon by noises tends to generate serious errors for the signal with information. So, in order to analyze and remove these noises, studies on numerous mathematical methods such as the Fourier transform have been implemented. And recently there have been many ongoing wavelet-based denoising algorithms representing excellent characteristics in time-frequency localization and multiresolution analysis, but the method to remove additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and the impulse noise simultaneously was not given. So, to reconstruct the corrupted signal by noises, in this paper a novel wavelet-based denoising algorithm was proposed and using signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) this method was compared to conventional methods.

  • Digital images are corrupted by noises, during signal acquisition and transmission. Amount those noises, additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and impulse noise are most representative. The conventional image restoration algorithms are mostly taken in simple noise environment, but they didn't perform very well in tempter noises environment. So a modified image restoration algorithm, which can remove complex noises by using the intensity differences and spatial distances between center pixel and its neighbor pixels as parameters, is proposed in this paper. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can't only remove AWGN and impulse noise separately, but also performs well in preserving details of images as edge.
