  • W/WC-Cu/Ag contacts of 60wt%-40wt% base and contacts with additives(Ni, Co, C) of 1wt% below were prepared by a press-sinter-infiltrate process to compare with their physical properties and arc erosion characteristics. In physical properties, electrical conductivity of contacts with additive is lower than that of base contacts but hardness is higher. The results of arc test show that the erosion rate of contact with -0.1wt% Ni is decreased.

  • Extra-high voltage(EHV) disconnecting switch(DS) consists of the electrical contacts and mechanical parts which actuate the contacts. When the short-circuit condition occurs, a large amount of current flows through the electrical contact in disconnecting switches and this causes considerable temperature rise due to Joule heating. If the temperature rise is higher than the melting point of contact material, the DS contact becomes melting and cannot be usable anymore. For this reason, the analysis for capability of carrying short-circuit current in DS contacts must be performed at a design stage. Here, we proposed a numerical technique for evaluating the capability of carrying short-circuit current at electrical contacts in EHV DS. In this numerical approach, the mechanical and thermal analyses were simulated to check the capability of carrying short-circuit current. First, the applied pressure at contact parts was analyzed considering the mechanical properties, and then contact resistance was calculated by an empirical equation. Finally, thermal analysis was performed with resistance variation at electrical contacts. To verify these numerical results, the distributions of temperature in DS were experimentally measured and compared with each other. The results from experiments were agreed well with those from the proposed numerical simulations.

  • In this paper, the oxidization characteristics were analyzed according to the shapes of Residual Current Protective Device(RCD) contacts. RCD is an electrical safety device specially designed to immediately switch the electricity off when electric leakage is detected at a level harmful to a person using electrical equipment. The shapes of RCD contacts are a little bit different according to the models. When RCD is turned on, stationary and moving contact do not fit together. So, it can cause the increase of contact resistance. To discover the deterioration characteristics of RCD contacts by switching repetition, the contacts were analyzed by stereo microscope, Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometer(EDS).

  • W/CE system contacts were manufactured f a press sinter-infiltrate process to compare with their arc erosion mechanism. The results of arc switching test show that erosion rate of contacts is dependence of test current and there is difference in the erosion rates between W contacts and WC contacts. At high current of 1000A erosion rate of W contacts is critically increased by formation of surface cracks. In especial arc anti-erosion is improved by Hi additive.

  • Gas insulated switchgear (GIS) is widely used in the power systems, however, the contacts overheating of the inside circuit breaker or disconnector may be a potential cause of developing accidents. As the temperature of the contacts cannot be directly acquired due to existence of the metallic shield, an infrared sensor is adopted to directly measure the temperature of the shield and then the contacts temperature can be indirectly obtained by data fitting, based on which the on-line temperature monitoring technology specifically for GIS contacts based on infrared sensing is proposed in this paper. A real GIS test platform is constructed and experimental studies are carried out to account for the influential factors that affect the accuracy of the infrared temperature measurement. A heat transfer model of the GIS module is also developed, together with experimental studies, the nonlinear temperature relationship among the contacts, the metallic shield and the environment based on a neural network algorithm is established. Finally, an integrated on-line temperature monitoring system for the GIS contacts is developed for on-site applications.

  • PVC insulated flexible cords are widely used as power cord sets in household electric appliances for low voltage. In this paper, we studied the thermal characteristics of power cord sets according to poor contacts between a receptacle and plug pins. In the results of experiments, poor contacts generated heat and ignited the combustibles. And the heat was transmitted to the plug body. While poor contacts were continuing, the electrical waveforms changed. Electrical accidents could be prevented by analyzing these waveforms.

  • The arc dispersion and contacts characteristics were analyzed according to switching off Residual Current Protective Device(RCD) switch. Arc dispersion process was taken by high speed imaging system at a rate of 10,000 frames per second. When RCD was switched from on to off, art was observed and it took about 2.3[ms] from the generation of arc to the extinction of arc. When RCD was switched from off to on, arc was not observed. We repeated switching on and off 1000, 3000 and 6000 times. After repetition, the surface characteristics of contacts were taken by stereo microscope and Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM). From the scattering patterns analysis of arc and the analysis of deteriorated contacts, it could be applicable to the research of electric fire and arc suppression.

  • The failure and erosion of relay contacts mainly depend on the presence of particles deposited on the contact surface in various contaminated atmospheres. In this paper, the effects of sea water and circuit parameters on the arcing and quenching of magnet relay contacts are studied. The sea water pollutants of relay contact surface have led to increase the arcing numbers on making contact, and the mean arc durations on breaking contacts. Moreover, the maximum surge voltage and mean arc duration between relay contacts are also varied significantly by the circuit parameters. The effects of the spark quenching circuits using condenser of diode on the arcing of contacts are also discussed.

  • In this paper, 'lifetime-temperature rise model' based on the 'lifetime-resistance model' is theoretically Proposed, in order to find out the evaluation method of degradation and the residual lifetime by use of infrared image camera for electric connections/contacts. Two assumptions have been builded up for the 'lifetime-temperature rise model': one is associated with the linear relationship between the temperature ism ΔK and contact resistance, and the other the functional relationship between the temperature of electric connections/contacts and the operating time presenting in the 'lifetime-resistance model'. To prove the proposed model, experiments have been performed for various electric connections/contacts. From the experimental results, measured values were quite similar to the calculated values, which proved the above-mentioned two assumptions. Therefore, by use of 'lifetime-temperature rise model', it is possible to estimate the trend of degradation and the residual lifetime for electric connections/contacts through the temperature measurements .

  • With Ni/Au and Pd/Au metal schemes and low temperature processing, we formed low resistance stable Ohmic contacts to p-type GaN. Our investigation was preceded by conventional cleaning, followed by treatment in boiling $HNO_3$:HCl (1:3). Metallization was by thermally evaporating 30 nm Ni/15 nm Au or 25 nm Pd/15 nm Au. After heat treatment in $O_2$ + $N_2$ at various temperatures, the contacts were subsequently cooled in liquid nitrogen. Cryogenic cooling following heat treatment at $600^{\circ}C$ decreased the specific contact resistance from $9.84{\times}10^{-4}$ ${\Omega}cm^2$ to $2.65{\times}10^{-4}$ ${\Omega}cm^2$ for the Ni/Au contacts, while this increased it from $1.80{\times}10^{-4}$ ${\Omega}cm^2$ to $3.34{\times}10^{-4}$ ${\Omega}cm^2$ for the Pd/Au contacts. The Ni/Au contacts showed slightly higher specific contact resistance than the Pd/Au contacts, although they were more stable than the Pd contacts. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy depth profiling showed the Ni contacts to be NiO followed by Au at the interface for the Ni/Au contacts, whereas the Pd/Au contacts exhibited a Pd:Au solid solution. The contacts quenched in liquid nitrogen following sintering were much more uniform under atomic force microscopy examination and gave a 3 times lower contact resistance with the Ni/Au design. Current-voltage-temperature analysis revealed that conduction was predominantly by thermionic field emission.
