Design Evaluation of WEDM Based on Deformation Analyses and Axiomatic Design (변형해석 및 공리적 설계에 의한 와이어 방전가공기의 설계평가)

  • Recent industrial requirements for highly precise shape processing have brought the electric discharge machining (EDM) in great need. High precision in EDM is primarily achieved by high performance controllers. However there exists inherent precision loss due to structural micro-deformation. On this background, we study structural deformation characteristics of wire cut EDM via finite element (FE) analysis and axiomatic design. Two different wire cut EDMs are selected as analysis models. 3D CAD package I-Deas is first used to construct FE models of wire cut EDMs, and then ABAQUS FE code is used for following structural analysis. Pertinency of FE mesh refinement is discussed in terms of η -factor. It is shown that performance accuracy of EDM depends strongly on the structural characteristics. Some design enhancements are suggested in an axiomatic design point of view. Finally we provide weight and temperature induced displacement discrepancies between wire end points as position functions of each subframe.

Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of an AA1070 Wire Severely Deformed by Drawing Process (인발공정에 의해 강소성 가공된 AA1070선재의 미세조직 및 기계적 특성)

  • A commercial AA1070 alloy for electrical wire is severely deformed by drawing process in which a rod with an initial diameter of 9mm into is reduced to a wire of 2mm diameter. The drawn AA1070 wire is then annealed at various temperatures from 200 to 450 ℃ for 2h. Changes in microstructure, mechanical properties and electrical properties of the specimens with annealing temperature are investigated in detail. The specimen begins partially to recrystallize at 250 ℃; above 300 ℃ it is covered with equiaxed recrystallized grains over all regions. Fiber textures of {110}<111> and {112}<111> components are mainly developed, and {110}<001> texture is partially developed as well. The tensile strength tends to decrease with annealing temperature due to the occurrence of recovery or/and recrystallization. On the other hand, the elongation of the annealed wire increases with the annealing temperature, and reaches a maximum value of 33.3 % at 300 ℃. Electric conductivity of the specimens increases with annealing temperature, and reaches a maximum value of 62.6 %IACS after annealing at 450 ℃. These results are discussed in comparison with those for the other aluminum alloy.

  • The resent developed high speed train called HEMU-430X (Highspeed Electric Multiple Unit - 430km/h eXperiment) recorded a 421.4 km/h in Kyoungbu high speed line in Korea. A verity of measurement systems are used to check the performance between pantograph and catenary system. An innovative measurement system is adopted to check the current of catenary wire in the track side during HEMU-430X test running. This paper presents the measurement results of catenary current in kyoungbu high-speed line and describe its utilizing technology in the experimental results of catenary current. In order to analyze field testing results, the current ratio between contact and catenary current have been analyzed by means of Carson-Pollaczek equation. And the current wave forms between catenary and contact wire are presented based on the simulation results.

Evaluation of AC Resistance in Litz Wire Planar Spiral Coils for Wireless Power Transfer

  • A relatively high operating frequency is required for efficient wireless power transfer (WPT). However, the alternating current (AC) resistance of coils increases sharply with operating frequency, which possibly degrades overall efficiency. Hence, the evaluation of coil AC resistance is critical in selecting operating frequency to achieve good efficiency. For a Litz wire coil, AC resistance is attributed to the magnetic field, which leads to the skin effect, the proximity effect, and the corresponding conductive resistance and inductive resistance in the coil. A numerical calculation method based on the Biot-Savart law is proposed to calculate magnetic field strength over strands in Litz wire planar spiral coils to evaluate their AC resistance. An optimized frequency can be found to achieve the maximum efficiency of a WPT system based on the predicted resistance. Sample coils are manufactured to verify the resistance analysis method. A prototype WPT system is set up to conduct the experiments. The experiments show that the proposed method can accurately predict the AC resistance of Litz wire planar spiral coils and the optimized operating frequency for maximum efficiency.

  • To improve the performance of clutch actuator of clutch-by-wire system for commercial vehicles, it is necessary to understand the driving characteristics of the system. To explain and predict the effects of driving characteristics on clutch characteristics, AMESim software is used. The simulation model of clutch-by-wire system is developed in the AMESim environments under the geometrical dimensions and driving mechanisms of the clutch-by-wire system, such as the rotation speed of the DC motor, the gear ratio of the reducer, the design parameters of the release fork, the coefficient of the clutch diaphragm spring, and so on. The results show that the theoretical analysis of the clutch-by-wire system for commercial vehicles using the AMESim software find out the driving characteristics of the clutch actuator, and predict the performance characteristics of the clutch-by-wire system.

Thermal Transient Analysis of Electric Initiator Used SUS 304 Bridgewire (SUS 304 발열선을 사용한 전기식 착화기의 열특성 분석)

  • Performing thermal transient test on electric initiator with SUS 304 bridgewire(diameter 2.3mil) and $Zr-KClO_4$ primary charge and analysing the test data using Fitted Wire Model shows that the thermal characteristic parameter related to primary charge is changed sharply around $300^{\circ}C$. It is determined that this phenomenon is due to endothermic reaction from phase transition of $KClO_4$, which is used as primary charge, and to physical change of thermal transient interface between bridgewire and primary charge. With this results, useful temperature range for the parameter obtained from thermal transient test can be suggested.

The Survey of Fire Hazard of Fan in Manufacturing Industries (제조 사업장의 환풍기 화재위험성 조사)

  • The short circuit and overload is presented by main cause of electrical fire. However, 85% of the fan directly connected the outlet box without switch in total 110 fans as a research in manufacturing industries. In installation direction of vertical type fans which was placed on the horizontal surface, only 39 vertical type fans were placed on vertical surface and 71 fans were placed on the horizontal type. The installation direction of the fans warns of the risk of the fire hazard due to the motor stall to the user manual of the maker. However, it is the representative nonconformity example of construction which the people or builder disregards. In addition, the condition of ground connection with the earth leakage prevention was investigated in grounding of 5 fans, non-grounding of 105 fans. The double insulation structure is generally used for small fan and it can't connect ground wire as electric plug of non-grounding type. However, industrial iron fan needs ground wire for electric leakage and to protect against electric shock.

  • In this study, the Joint of 345kV OF $1C{\times}2000mm^2$ cable was developed to keep up with the trends that need higher-voltage & capacity underground transmission line. The type of joint developed was based on the two kinds of models that have had a good reliability internationally. The mechnic and electric characteristics of the sample specimen was managed in detail when it was manufactured and estimated. Especially, in order to prove the reliability of usage for 30 years, the method of long term aging test was studied. As a result of test, we knew that the joint developed had a good performance. From this study, it can be thought that future ultra-high voltage underground transmission line could be constructed by domestic technology.

Development of Thermal Precursor DB for Partial Disconnection and Poor Contact on Electrical Wire (배선에서의 반단선 및 접촉불량에 대한 열적 전조 DB구축)

  • This paper aims at the precursor analysis and DB development of electrical fires based on thermal and current signals for partial disconnection and poor contact on electric wires through experiments and simulations. Also, DB system required for developing the precursor DB with these data was studied and designed. Firstly, in case of partial disconnection, characteristics were derived and analyzed by experiment and electrical-thermal finite element method(Flux 3D) on the model wires which consist of VCTF and IV electric wires. Based on the characteristics, About 351 partial disconnection precursor patterns were generated by the thermal analysis for electric wire according to deterioration time under normal state and 200% overload state of rated current. Secondly, in order to develop poor contact precursor patterns, temperature value and the current signal were considered. In simulating the poor contact situation on connector area of MCCB, connection torque was changed. Through the experimental analysis, about 251 poor contact precursor patterns were generated. Finally, Using thermal precursor patterns obtained by partial disconnection and poor contact, electrical fire thermal precursor DB was developed.
