  • As a new host material for a red phosphor for PDP applications, has studied (Y,Gd)$Al_3(BO_3)_4$ which gives non-centrosymmetric sites for $Eu^{3+}$ activators. Vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) excitation spectrum of new red phosphor (Y,Gd)$Al_3(BO_3)_4$:$Eu^{3+}$ has two broad bands. One band with the absorption edge at ca. 168 nm is the band-gap absorption of aluminoborate and the other broad band centered 240 nm is the charge transfer transition between $Eu^{3+}$ and the neighboring oxygen anions. The PL spectrum shows the strongest emission at 617 nm due to the electric dipole $^5D_0{\rightarrow}^7F_2$ transition of $Eu^{3+}$, whose luminescent chromaticity is (0.67, 0.33).

  • It is necessary to measure precisely the magnetic characteristics of electrical steel sheets under rotating magnetic fields, to obtain an accurate numerical performance analysis of electric machines made of electrical steel sheets. In this paper, the two dimensional magnetic characteristics of an electrical steel sheet are measured and explained under rotating magnetic fields using a two-axes-excitation type single sheet tester (SST). Through experiments, the magnetic properties, under rotating magnetic fields, of a non-oriented and grain oriented electrical steel sheet were measured respectively. In addition, the iron losses due to not only the alternating magnetic fields, but also rotating magnetic fields were measured. These experimentally measured results can evidently be applied to the analysis of iron losses in electrical machines.

  • A type of electric propulsion employed by specialized purpose vessels or offshore is the azimuth thruster. Azimuth thruster application had been increasing recently and resulted to excellent vessel maneuverability. However, this system is very complex and some of its major component being exposed under the seawater level presents difficulty in sealing design. For Polar class icebreaker operating in extreme sea condition, this requires a high level of reliability and safety. In this study, the characteristics of lubricating orifice pipe structural vibration installed at the lower reduction gear were investigated and analyzed through beam analysis theory and comparison of experiments. Propeller excitation and the resonant modes of vibration causing excessive vibration and suitable countermeasures to prevent damage due to vibration fatigue on the pipe are presented.

  • Owing to miniaturization and low-power electronics, mobile, implanted, and wearable devices have become the main trends of electronics during the past decade. There has been much research regarding energy harvesting to achieve battery-free or self-powered devices. The optimal design problems of a double-pendulum kinetic-energy harvester from human motion are studied in this paper. For the given form factor, the weight of the harvester, and the known human excitation, the optimal design problem is solved using a dynamic non-linear double-pendulum model and an electric generator. The average electrical power was selected as the performance index for the given time period. A double-pendulum harvester was proven to be more efficient than a single-pendulum harvester when the appropriate parameters were used.

  • We developed a simple and effective method for the SERS-based detection of protein-small molecule complexes and label-free proteins using avidin-induced silver aggregation. Upon excitation with light of the appropriate wavelength (633 and 532 nm), the aggregated silver nanoparticles generate a strong electric field that couples with the resonance of the molecules (atto610 and cytochrome c), increasing the characteristic signals of these molecules and resulting in sensitive detection. The detection limit of biotin with the proposed method is as low as 48 ng/mL. The most important aspect of this method is the induction of silver aggregation by a protein (avidin), which makes the silver more biocompatible. This technique is very useful for the detection of protein-small molecule complexes.

  • This paper describes two different systems which can compensate harmonic currents generated in a power system. As non-linear loads increase gradually in industry fields, harmonic current generated in the electric power network system also increases. Harmonic current makes a power network current distorted and generates heat, vibration and noise in the power machinery. Many approaches have been applied to compensate harmonic currents generated in the power system. Among various approaches, in this paper, two kinds are compared and evaluated. They are flywheel compensators bases on secondary excitation of WRIM(wounded rotor induction motor) and SCIM(squirrel cage induction motor). Both systems have a common structure. They use a flywheel as an energy storage device and use PWM inverters. The main differences are the size and rating of the converter used.

  • Since P-ELD(powders type electroluminescent device) phenomena were found by G.Destriau at first In 1936, lots of studying was performed in order to realize surface emission devices and flat panel display as a backlight. Due to the problem of low luminance and color and so on, it was delayed. Recently using electric field and thermal effect which can change it\`s molecular arrangement, it can be developed using photoelectric properties of P-ELD. P-ELD in this study was prepared by casting method. Basic structure is ITO/Phosphor/insulator/Al sheet, each layer was mixed by binder, which concentration 11p(poise) for phosphor, 8p(poise) fort insulator. Dielectric properties was investigated first and emission properties of P-ELD based on ZnS:Mn,Cu/ZnS:Cu,Br mixture. P-ELD prepared in this work exhibits about 100cd/㎡ 1-kHz simusoidal excitation.

  • The Cs3Sb photocathode was formed by non-vacuum process technology and successive in-situ photocathode vacuum device fabrication carried out in a process chamber. Performance testing of the device was followed. Light emission from the devices was induced by photoemitted electrons, which were accelerated by an anode electric field that was shielded from the photoemitter surface. The luminescent characteristics of the devices were investigated by measuring the optical parameters as functions of the applied anode voltages. The results showed that this approach could produce a more easily directed and controlled stream of light. These features make these devices suitable for a variety of planar lighting applications.

  • Properties of electrical discharge in flames are investigated by making use of the ionization cross section of air. Fames have three distictive features. They are hot, emit light and are weakly ionized. We investigate influence of these three characteristics of flames on the electrical breakdown. It is found that the breakdown electric field in flames is inversely proportional to the flame temperature, thereby easily generating plasmas in flames. A swarm of low-energy electrons in flames would allow significant population of electronically excited states of flame molecules to be formed. Therefore, the analysis shows that the electronic excitation of flame molecules may also considerably reduce the breakdown field. Plasma electrons generate atomic oxygens by the electron attachment of oxygen molecules in high-pressure flames. These oxygen atoms are the most reactive radicals in flames for material oxidation. How are you and your family in this new year\ulcorner Professor Choi! I plan to go back Korea on February 6. All my family members are fine and have good time because I am here. Once I am in Korea, I will call you. I am always grateful for your helpful hand. Thank you so much.
