  • Compared with the BF slag, the EAF slag has expansion due to the reaction with water and free CaO. Therefore it is specified in Concrete Specification that the FAP slag aggregated must not be used in concrete. Because of this reason it is unusual to use the EAF slag aggregate in concrete. The EAF slag aggregate treated with accelerated and water aging was comparatively satisfied with fundamental properties, which are specific gravity, unit weight, abrasion and immersion expansion ratio, as concrete aggregate. Therefore when we measured the compressive strength till 28 days, we found that the mortar and concrete replacing the natural aggregate with the EAF slag aggregate by 4 steps had better results than the concrete using the natural aggregate in a view of the compressive strength. But at 91 days, concrete using the EAF slag aggregate had no difference with it using the natural aggregate.

  • In ultra high strength concrete, when electric arc furnace oxidizing slag is substituted for sea sand as fine aggregate, compressive strength was improved about 15 MPa. To figure out the cause of the improvement in compressive strength, this study considered the dissolution characteristics of Ca component in fine aggregate and examined the microstructure, porosity, microhardness, and Ca/Si mole ratio on the interface of fine aggregate and paste. And to examine the mechanism of strength improvement resulted from the shape of fine aggregate, this study measured the surface roughness of fine aggregate with AFM. According to the result of this experiment, the mechanisms of strength improvement in ultra high strength concrete resulted from the use of electric arc furnace oxidizing slag as fine aggregate can be divided into chemical and physical mechanisms. In the chemical mechanism, the soluble Ca component contained in electric arc furnace oxidizing slag is dissolved and forms a hydrate between fine aggregate and paste to improve the interlocking strength of fine aggregate-paste. Also, it makes the microstructure around the fine aggregate. And in the physical mechanism, electric arc furnace oxidizing slag has a twice greater surface roughness than sea sand, so the interlocking strength between fine aggregate and paste increases, which contributes to the development of compressive strength.

  • This study is performed to evaluate the flexural performance of reinforced concrete columns with electric arc furnace oxidizing slag aggregates. Electric arc furnace slag is a by-product obtained from the process of refining scrap steel. The electric arc furnace slag can be used as a concrete aggregate, because it mainly consists of CaO and $SiO_2$, similar to natural rocks and minerals. Three rectangular columns with various types of aggregate were cast to test in flexure. All of the test specimens had a cross-section of $250{\times}250$mm and a height of 1,500 mm in test region. The specimens were designed to apply reversed cyclic antisymmetric moment and constant axial force. The experimental results showed that the specimens with electronic arc furnace oxidizing slag aggregates had superior flexural performance than the specimen with natural aggregates.

The Effect of Combinations of Electric Arc Furnace Slag and Lime Stone aggregates on Engineering Properties of Ultra High Strength Concrete with 80MPa (전기로 산화슬래그 잔골재와 석회암 골재의 조합사용이 80MPa급 초고강도 콘크리트의 공학적 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • The aim of research is to investigate various physical properties of ultra high strength concrete of 80MPa class using a combination of limestone aggregate and electronic arc furnace oxidizing slag aggregate. For aggregate combinations, granite and limestone are used for coarse aggregate, granite and limestone are also used for fine aggregate. And also, limestone fine aggregate is replaced by electronic arc furnace oxidizing slag aggregate of 25% and 50%. Test results indicated that flowability and compressive strength increased when limestone fine aggregate was used compared to that using granite fine aggregate due to higher modulus of elasticity by limestone. Also substitution of electronic arc furnace oxidizing slag aggregate resulted in a decrease of compressive strength slightly. It is found that the use of electronic arc furnace oxidizing slag aggregate and limestone aggregate would be favorable for reducing the autogenous shrinkage by as much as 9~25%.

  • Blast furnace slag, a by-product of the steel industry, is mostly recycled as concrete admixture, but electric arc furnace slag has not been recycled to date. In particular, since electric arc furnace slag partially contains free lime (free-CaO) in the discharge, it is necessary to review this in order to recycle f or construction materials. Recently an atomizing process which is a method of rapidly cooling electric arc furnace slag has been developed and applied. Therefore, in order to use the fine aggregate of oxidized slag from electric furnace restored by this method as an aggregate for concrete, physical damage and chemical reviewing are required. In this study, a physical and chemical review was conducted on the fine aggregate of Electric Arc Furnace Oxidizing Slag (EFOS) as a by-product of the steel manufacturing process with atomizing process. In this experimental study, EFOS was experimentally examined about whether it can be used as concrete fine aggregate. Also, we intend to provide basic data for the future use of the EFOS fine aggregate. As a result of the experimental study, it was found that the fine aggregate of the EFOS satisfied the quality standards of the fine aggregate for concrete in most items specified by Korean Standard.

  • Steel industry produces many by-products and wastes such as blast furnace slag, electric arc furnace slag, and converter slag. As in the case of rock, the main component of steel slag are CaO and $SiO_2$ ; further, steel slag is as alkaline as portland cement or concrete. Electric arc furnace oxidizing slag is possible to use as an aggregate for concrete ; however, it has been reclaimed because of it's expansibility caused by free CaO. Recently, a innovative rapid cooling method for melting steel slag has been developed in Korea, which reduces free lime content to minimum level and increases the stability of iron oxide. Therefore, this study describes the results of a series of research to utilize globular shape of electric arc furnace oxidizing slag fine aggregates made by rapidly cooled method for the construction industry by cooling rapidly melted slag from the steel industry. First of all, an experiment was carried out to investigate the quality characteristics of rapidly cooled electric arc furnace oxidizing slag fine aggregates in order to determine whether they can be applied to the construction industry. Then, by applying them to concrete of various particle sizes, we explored experimentally the desired condition to apply rapidly cooled electric arc furnace oxidizing slag fine aggregates to concrete.

  • In this paper, we researched and compared the properties of steel slag(is divided with electric arc furnace slag and converter slag) as concrete aggregate by measuring physical and chemical characteristics of it. The steel slag mainly contains SiO2 and CaO as the chemical composition. The reaction with water and a little of free CaO in the slag causes slag's volume to expanse. Therefore, we used several aging methods in order to decrease the characteristics of slag volume expansion. The physical properties of steel slag aggregate is researched and then the strength of concrete with the steel slag aggregate is measured.

  • The EMP slip rate was compared with the general concrete using the electric arc furnace slag as an aggregate. Experimental results show that the shielding rate of concrete specimens using electric arc furnace slag increases. It is considered that the shielding rate is increased due to the high Fe content in the components of the electric arc furnace slag aggregate.

  • This study applied autoclave expansion and heat curing to accelerate the hydration of concrete and investigated how these methods affect the expansion rate, crack pattern, aggregate size effect, and expansion of electric arc furnace oxidizing slag (EOS)-containing concrete. An expansion prediction model was simulated to estimate the expansion behavior over a long period and to establish usage guidelines for EOS aggregates. The results showed that the EOS content in concrete should range between 20% and 30% depending on the construction conditions, and that coarse aggregates with a diameter of ${\geq}4.75-mm$ are not applicable to construction engineering. By comparison, aggregates with a size of 1.18-0.03 mm resulted in higher expansion rates; these aggregates can be used depending on the construction conditions. On Day 21, the prediction model attained a coefficient of determination ($R^2$) of at least 0.9.
