Purpose : This study investigated the effect of bamboo stepping exercises on the blood pressure of the elderly. This study was performed for 8 weeks. Methods : The study participants included 25 people aged 65 and over. Of the participants, 16 were in the hypertensive elderly group and 9 were in the normal blood pressure elderly group. The participants stepped on semicircular bamboo for 20 minutes 3 times a week for 8 weeks. The participants' blood pressure was measured 3 times before and after 8 weeks of exercise. The mean values of the 3 before and after measurements were compared and analyzed statistically. Results : The systolic blood pressure of the hypertensive elderly group decreased significantly from $134.6{\pm}21.1mmHg$ to $119.9{\pm}18.1mmHg$ (p<.05). The diastolic blood pressure of the hypertensive elderly group decreased from $70.2{\pm}10.5mmHg$ to $66.1{\pm}9.8mmHg$, but the difference was not significant. The systolic blood pressure of the normal blood pressure elderly group decreased significantly from $127.2{\pm}18.7mmHg$ to $115.5{\pm}19mmHg$ (p<.05). The diastolic blood pressure of the normal blood pressure elderly group decreased from $72.6{\pm}11.3mmHg$ to $68.2{\pm}12mmHg$, but the decrease was not significant. Conclusion : After completing 8 weeks of the bamboo stepping exercises, the elderly participants' systolic blood pressure was effectively reduced. Today, lifestyle modifications, such as daily exercise, are necessary to control the blood pressure of the elderly. We hope that the bamboo stepping exercises, which are easy to perform and are not restricted by place and time, will become part of the elderly health policy.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a Health Mileage Program (EHMP) to promote exercise amongst the elderly and assess the feasibility of the program. Methods: A literature review to identify the effects of exercise in the elderly was conducted. Relevant cases were investigated and in-depth interviews with exercise instructors were conducted, after which the EHMP was developed based on the assessment and tested in three regions. The outcome was evaluated using indicators such as attendance rate, number of participants, proportion of participants who received health education, and proportion of participants who measured their physical and mental status. Results: Based on assessment, we developed an EHMP composed of four steps. Following application of the EHMP in three regions, ${\geq}80%$ of the participants received incentives. Additionally, ${\geq}85%$ of participants underwent measurement of their physical and mental status. The proportion of participants who received health education differed among regions. Conclusion: The EHMP program increased participation and interest in exercise programs for the elderly. However, there is concern regarding availability due to regional differences in resources related to elderly exercise; therefore, it will be necessary to invest in infrastructure, including facilities, and knowledgeable instructors.
Objective: The aim of this study was to find out the factors associated with the health status and life satisfaction in the elderly who participated in an exercise program practiced by the National Health Insurance Corporation and the elderly who did not. Methods: The subjects of this study included 105 elderly people in K-city who participated in the elderly exercise program of the National Health Insurance Corporation and 103 elderly who did not. Results: The elderly group that participated in the exercise program showed slightly better physical health than non-participants but the difference was significant only in the item of bowel control. The elderly group that participated in the exercise program displayed slightly better mental health status than non-participants but the difference was significant only in the item of memory and cognitive ability. The elderly group that participated in the exercise program showed significantly higher life satisfaction than non-participants. The factors affecting the satisfaction of life were participation of exercise program, higher level of education, and perception of health, and the attributable rate was 24.6%. Conclusions: In conclusion, this study suggested that the people who participated in elderly exercise program showed higher level of physical and mental health status and life satisfaction than non-participants. Therefore, various National Exercise Program for elderly tailored by characteristics should be implemented.

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a virtual reality-based complex cognitive training program for depression, cognitive function, and digital divide reduction in the elderly who have not been diagnosed with dementia or MCI. Methods : We enrolled 16 participants who were over 65 years old and not been diagnosed with dementia or MCI. We randomly divided into three groups (A, B, C). Participants underwent an 8-week virtual reality-based complex cognitive training program (60 minutes each session, twice per week). At a baseline, all participants completed questionnaires on general features, depression and cognitive function. After four weeks, all participants completed questionnaires on depression and cognitive function. After the end of the last program, participants conducted questionnaires on depression, cognitive function, and usability evaluation. Results : At the 8-week follow-up, 16 participants completed the program. Compared to the baseline, the average score of cognitive function was increased (from 26.5 to 28.5), although it was not statistically significant (p<.061). There were no significant differences between baseline and post-training evaluations on depression scores. The average score of usability evaluation was 75.56, which corresponds to good. Conclusion : Even though the results showed no statistically significant findings in cognitive function and depression after the virtual reality-based complex cognitive training intervention, this pilot study proposed the possibility of utilizing the virtual reality program as a tool that provides active learning opportunities for the elderly and helps improve their cognitive function through multi-sensory components. Also, the findings of this study suggested a positive reevaluation of the elderly's digital access capabilities while reducing the digital divide. A virtual reality-based complex cognitive training program improved the social network of the elderly. We expect that it will expand in size and help with their social participation of the elderly.
Korea has been running the community oral health program for the elderly, including topical fluoride application and scaling. The aim of this study was to compare the subjective and objective oral health status of 345 participants according to the number of participants in the program and of 37 participants before and after the 5-year program. The survey consisted of an interview questionnaire and oral examinations. Analysis of variance was used to compare the variables of the 345 participants according to the numbers of participants. Paired t-test was used to compare the oral health statuses before and after the 5-year program in 37 subjects. There was no difference in subjective oral health status according to the number of participants in the oral health program in the elderly, including subjective health status, subjective oral health status, satisfaction with oral health, concern about oral health, need of dental treatment, oral pain, tooth sensitivity, subjective periodontal health, and subjective symptoms of periodontitis. The community periodontal index (CPI) of the 1 time participants was significantly higher than that of 3 times, 4 times or 5 times participants in the upper center, lower left, lower center, and lower right areas. There was a significant improvement in CPI from $2.59{\pm}1.14$ to $1.41{\pm}1.54$ (p<0.001) and positive oral behavioral change (daily tooth brushing frequency from $2.27{\pm}0.73$ to $2.54{\pm}0.90$) before and 5 years after the program. However, the program did not prevent tooth loss as the numbers of the remaining teeth significantly reduced from $23.77{\pm}1.84$ to $21.95{\pm}2.03$ over 5 years. We showed that running the community oral health program for the elderly for more than three years might have positive effects on the periodontal health of participants.
The purposes of this research were 1) to investigate the characteristics of the meal service participants; 2) to evaluate the food service utilization of the elderly; 3) to identify major factors that affect food service satisfaction of the participants in Chungchongbuk-Do. For doing this, 309 subjects were selected and the survey research method was adopted. The characteristics of the meal service participants were similar to the characteristics of general elderly population in Korea. The public assistant recipients were under representative in this sample, that is, most of elderly people who participated in meal service consisted of non public assistant recipients. It meant that meal service was not provided to low-income elderly people. The health status of the elderly people was stable to be able to attend to the meal service organizations. The most important reason to use a meal service was to see their friends. It showed that meal services played an important role to provide support systems to the elderly people in community. Thus, meal services should be provided to the elderly people with social services. In order to analyze the factors influencing food service satisfaction, multiple regression analysis was employed. The results showed that physical activity, contact with friends who met in meal service program, and the number of social services were the important variables to predict meal service satisfaction in this study. These findings contributed to a better understanding of developing a meal service planning. Several improvement strategies were recommended to provide effective meal services. First, socio-economical characteristics of the elderly should be considered to provide appropriate services. Second, meal services should be provided to the elderly people with social services. Third, home delivery meal services should be available to the home-bound elderly.
This study tested the path model with regard to how certain variables (control attribution, demand-control-support of activity, and control strategy) affected the elderly workers' subjective well-being(swb). In the path model, the exogenous variables were internal and external control attribution. We used demand-control-support of activity, and primary and secondary control strategies as mediating variables. The endogenous variable was each elderly worker's swb. Study participants were 205 elders participating in an "education activity". We used descriptive statistical analysis, Pearson's correlation and hierarchical multiple regression to examine data collected from structured interviews with the participants. Path analysis revealed the followings: First, secondary control strategy was the strongest predictor of participants' swb but internal control attribution, demand of activity, and support of activity also positively affected participants' swb. Second, internal control attribution indirectly affected the participants' swb. Finally primary control strategy negatively affected on the participants' swb.
This study analyzed the epidemiological trends of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) according to age and sex among individuals aged 50 years or older in South Korea from September 2018 to December 2020. We found that the positivity rate for Gardnerella vaginalis was the highest in the study group, followed by the positivity rate for Ureaplasma parvum (UP). Interestingly, the positivity rates for Mycoplasma hominis and UP were higher in female participants than in male participants. The positivity rate for Treponema pallidum was very low in the female participants. During the study period, the positivity rate for herpes simplex virus 2 increased in the female participants, while the positivity rate for Candida increased in the male participants. These results show that the STI positivity rate varies according to age and sex, and a difference was observed in the average age of positive participants according to the type of STIs. We found a clear pattern of infection in the elderly population and according to sex. Our findings are expected to be used as baseline data for future research, education, and prevention of STIs in the elderly population.
