The survey was performed with 1,038 elders aged over 60 who were using the senior health town of Gwang-ju Metropolitan City by using a self-administered questionnaire and being interviewed with surveyors. The period of the survey was from the 10th to 15th of December, 2010. According to the results of this study, variables affecting the elders' quality of life were academic qualification (B= .074, p<0.05), instructors satisfaction (B=.172, p<0.001), staff satisfaction (B=.104, p<0.01), and facilities and environment satisfaction (B=.217, p<0.001). That is, the lower academic background they have, the higher instructors', staff's, facilities and environment's satisfaction are, the quality of life in the elder was positively affected. One hundred of subjects, over age 65, participated in the survey and we could find that the "Grief of loss" was composed of four sub-factors('economical loss', 'loss from being parted by death', 'loss of physical functions', 'loss of relations'). These four sub-factors of "Grief of loss" showed negative correlations with the scores of the satisfaction with life. However, three other sub-factors except 'loss from being parted by death' showed negative correlations with the scores of 'the positive affect'. On the other hand, other three sub-factors except 'economical loss' showed positive correlations with the scores of 'the negative affect'. Especially, the 'economical loss' was affecting on 'the negative affect' and 'the positive affect' significantly. Also, 'loss of relations' was affecting on both 'the negative affect' and 'the satisfaction with life''. Two out of the four sub-factors, 'economical loss' and 'loss from being parted by death', showed no significant effects on the subjective well-being. This results insists us that the emotional supports, especially from their offspring, are truly important for elderly to overcome their Grief of loss('loss of physical functions', 'loss of relations')

  • As the population ages, health problems of the elderly, including functional disorders and cognitive impairment, have become some of the most important social issues in Korea. The purpose of this study is to discover the rate of prevalence and factors related to dementia among the elderly in Jeju Province. 2405 elderly in Jeju Province were interviewed, using a questionnaire consisting of sociodemographic characteristics: health behavior, quality of life, and MMSE-K. Prevalence of dementia was 9.4%(11.7% of females, 4.1% of males). Factors related to dementia, analyzed by multiple logistic regression, were age, working status, subjective health status, social support, and subjective economic status. In community health care for the elderly, factors relating to dementia have to be considered. When planning community health care, priority should be given to the elderly who: need care but live alone; lack social support; have a low standard of living; believe they are not in a good state of health; or whose life satisfaction is low.

  • This study examined the awareness of the middle aged about the digital home system and well-being apartment design elements in order to suggest the design guidelines for planning of the elderly housing environment. By literature review, the concept and characteristics of the digital home system and well-being Apartment design elements were summarized the degree of satisfaction and preference of middle aged for these characteristics were investigated and analyzed. For this study, a questionnaire survey of 156 housewives living in apartment complex of Busan was carried out. The results of this study are as follows: The middle aged were generally short of recognition for digital skill and service, and also they showed positive evaluations to a few useful items of digital home system. These items belong under safety security system and interior environment control system and provided for convenient & comfortable life. Accordingly, satisfied digital home system can apply basic design element for housing for elderly. Whereas, the middle-aged were not satisfied with housework help system and cultural life system because items of these systems were not various and complicate to us. So, for the improvement of not satisfied digital home system, we needed development of digital contents and marketing & management for high accessibility and easy useability. The middle aged will concern about health & environment friendly continuously and become to stay long in their housing as the characteristics of elderly. So, It is necessary to be considered well-being apartment design elements of health & environment friendly very actively and lastingly in elderly housing environment design. Also, the awareness of middle aged for digital home system and well-being apartment design elements varied according to the background characteristics. This suggests housing environment for elderly life is considered differently as various background characteristics of middle aged.

  • This cross-sectional study was designed to describe in nutritional and health status of the Korean elderly residing in America using demographic variables, dietary, anthropometric and functional status indicators, and to investigate possible relationships among these variables. Sixty elderly persons aged 61-91 years were assessed in their homes. Dietary intake was estimated by the 24-hour recall and brief dietary questionnaire. The following anthropometric measures were taken : weight, height, knee height, triceps skinfold, and midarm circumference. Functional status was measured by activities of daily living(ADLs), instrumental activities of daily living(IADLs) questionnaires, and a measure of psychosocial status as "happiness score"(a life satisfaction questionnaire). Intakes of energy, calcium, magnesium, folacin, vitamin B6, and zinc were low in this elderly sample. Females 75 years of age and older had extremely low energy intakes. A large percentage of subjects reported difficulty with both activities of daily living and instrumental activities of daily living. Subjects over 75 years of age reported more difficulty than younger subjects for most activities. Gender differnces were seen in anthropometric variables and energy intake. Happiness scores were similar in subjects, regardless of age or gender, however, happiness score was significantly correlated with the energy and protein intake(p<0.05). Several difficulties were encountered during the assessment of this elderly sample. The conditions in the home were unpredictable and often inadequate for the anthropometric measures in particular. Further research is needed to improve current methodologies so that they may be more adaptable to the conditions found in homes. in homes.
