  • This study examined the indoor exercise environment use and needs of older adults. The target population was seniors aged 60 years and older living in a newly developed apartment complex. Variables include demographic and housing characteristics, status of exercise, and indoor exercise environmental evaluation and needs. A total of 102 data items were analyzed using frequency, t-test and ANOVA. Noteworthy results are as below. First, community centers and community welfare centers were the most desirable exercise environments because of affordability, exercise programs/spaces. Such exercise environments should be developed in more locations for increasing numbers of seniors. Second, indoor exercise environments need to be improved based on seniors' physical capabilities and environmental behavior. Third, supportive spaces such as restrooms, shower rooms, locker rooms should be carefully designed. Fourth, seniors wanted to have walking trails and indoor swimming pools, the most desirable exercise spaces, within ten to 15 minutes walking distance.

They hope their dwelling units are grouped like regular neighborhood and the units have traditional designs such conventional kitchen and sink and wooden floor. Finally in this study it is proposed that Korean rural retirement community be established with maximum use conventional dwelling resources so that the residents benefit old fashioned living tradition even in the recently moved retirement society.

By applying the barrier-free environment certification standards should conduct an assessment of the level of the current public office buildings in Jeju. It presents the environmental improvement of public office buildings for barrier-free environment. Result: Barrier-free environment status of the five public office buildings research surveyed all buildings have shown low levels of installed facilities for the disabled. In particular, it was analyzed that represents a very low level in the intermediate facilities and other facilities. The development of a specific installation manual for the facilities for the disabled is required to improve public office buildings. And barrier-free criteria need to reflect on the implementation of regulations. Implications: Through continuous research to analyze the barrier-free level and problems of public office buildings, it will be made to improve the comprehensive and reasonable alternative.

  • According to the change of the life environment and economic growth, the more highly a city has developed, the more concentrated is the urban function. That is, a city is required for adding more infrastructure. But, both limited land resources and financial problems made it impossible to add infrastructure. So, the necessity of multi-dimensional planning of urban infrastructure was recognized. Especially, in the urban residential area, a mixed-use of the playground of a school and the empty space of a park is desired to serve the issue of insufficient parking spaces. Schools and parks are closely connected to the center of a town, and playing a central role for the town life. For this reason, they are highly demanded in urban residential areas and also expected to be effective. However, we need to consider not only parking convenience but also the safety of users in design process, because people using parks and schools include young students and the elderly. In this study, we mainly examined physical characteristics and the utilization of schools and parks with parking facilities in urban residential areas. Then, we analyzed cases through comparing and evaluating in terms of convenience and safety. and weighed up advantages and disadvantages of each through the comparison of the schools and the parks having parking facilities. The results of this study are expected to provide fundamental references for preparing design standards for such facilities.

  • This study aims to explore age-related differences with the assessment tools in the web-based 3D virtual model house and to propose the 3D model house criteria which everyone can use easily. The participants came from three age groups, ranging from their 20s to their over 40. Presence, Usability and Space perception and cognition in the experiment for navigating and evaluating the web-based 3D model house were measured and compared through one-way ANOVA and two-way ANOVA. The results and conclusions are as follows. (1) The younger the participants were, the more positive they evaluated the experiment on Presence. However, 20s needed higher presence than other two groups. (2) 30s and over 40 groups evaluated that the 3D virtual model house was more efficient than an actual model house on Usability. When the participants were younger, the values of 'expressivity' factor were higher. (3) The younger the participants were, the more positive they perceived the virtual environment (VE) on Space perception and cognition scale. There were no significant differences in the selection of dwelling size and the floor plan type. There were no significant differences of interaction effects between age and online gaming experience on Presence and Usability. The results of the current study demonstrate that there are differences among age groups and older groups have difficulty navigating and assessing in a VE. Although older groups take longer to adapt in the VE, they regard the 3D model house as an effective tool for purchase of house.

  • Recently, the number of unsold apartments has been increasing, and apartment furnishing companies have tried a marketing strategy by utilizing the outdoor space for differentiation. There are many differentiation strategies. One of them is to improve the dwellings-on-ground space in apartment complex. Owing to the high density and high-rise of apartment buildings, the dwellings-on-ground apartment complex have been recognized as not good housing by residents in korea. The precedent study on the responses from residents showed the negative effects mainly due to sunlight, daylight, view and privacy and the positive effects from good accessibility and good environment for children and elderly people. The purpose of this study was to improve the dwellings-on-ground space and to suggest the most appropriate type of the dwellings-on-ground space through the residents' desires and preferences. In this point of view, this study shows three results for the design improvement: 1) Providing private gardens and individual accesses to the dwellings-on-ground. 2) Providing private garden with flower bed to intensify the visual aspect. 3) Furnishing variable transformation of unit plan in dwellings-on-ground, for example, maisonette, etc.

Also open questions asking adding or eliminating areas or indicator and other opinions were included. On the basis of these answers, the aging-friendly neighborhood design indicators supporting contacts and meetings of old residents was developed. They are consisted of 7 areas in neighborhood and 60 indicators. Those areas were semi-public residential area, commercial area, cultural & educational area, health & medical area, park & green area, walkway, and public traffic facilities. This would be used to design the neighborhood environments that are aging-friendly and facilitating casual contacts and meetings of all residents, especially old residents.
