This study performed a precise dynamic finite element time history elastic-plastic seismic analysis considering the welds, which have been not considered in design stage, on the nuclear components subjected to severe seismic loadings such as beyond-design basis earthquakes for sustainable nuclear power plants. First, the dynamic finite element elastic-plastic seismic analysis was performed for a general design practice that does not take into account the welds of the pressurizer surge line system, one of safety class I components in nuclear power plants, and then the reference values for the accumulated equivalent plastic strain, equivalent plastic strain, and von Mises effective stress were set. Second, the dynamic finite element elastic-plastic seismic analyses were performed for the case of considering only the mechanical strength over-mismatch of the welds as well as for the case of considering both the strength over-mismatch and welding residual strain. Third, the effects of the strength over-mismatch and welding residual strain were analyzed by comparing the finite element analysis results with the reference values. As a result of the comparison, it was found that not considering the strength over-mismatch may lead to conservative assessment results, whereas not considering the welding residual strain may be non-conservative.
The Hengda Group super high-rise building in Jinan City uses the frame-core tube structural system. With a height of 238.3 m, it is above the B-level height limit of 150 m for buildings within 7-magnitude seismic fortification zones. Therefore, it is necessary to apply performance-based seismic design to this super high-rise building. In this study, response spectrum analysis and comparative analysis of the structure are conducted using two software applications. Moreover, elastic time-history analysis, seismic analysis under an intermediate earthquake, and elastic-plastic time-history analysis under rare earthquakes are performed. Based on the analysis results, corresponding strengthening measures are implemented at weaker structural locations, such as corners, wall ends connected to framed girders, and coupling beams connected to framed girders. The failure mode and failure zone of major stress components of the structure under rare earthquakes are analysed. The conclusions to this research demonstrate that weaker locations and important parts of the structure satisfy the requirements for elastic-plastic deformation in the event of rare earthquakes.
Elastic-plastic shear buckling behaviors of the web-post in a Castellated Steel Beam (CSB) with hexagonal web openings under vertical shear force were investigated further using Finite Element Model (FEM) based on a sub-model, which took the upper part of the web-post under horizontal shear force to represent the whole web-post under vertical shear force. A simplified design method for the web-post elastic-plastic shear buckling strength was proposed based on simulation results of the sub-model. Proper boundary conditions were applied to the sub-model to assure that its behaviors were identical to those of the whole web-post. The equation to calculate the thin plate elastic shear buckling strength was adopted as the basic form to build the design equation for elastic-plastic buckling strength of the sub-model. Parameters that might affect the elastic-plastic shear buckling strength of the whole web-post were studied. After obtaining the vertical shear buckling strength of a sub-model through FEM, the shear buckling coefficient k can be obtained through the back analysis. A practical calculation method for k was proposed through curving fitting the parameter study results. The elastic-plastic shear buckling strength of the web-post calculated using the proposed shear buckling coefficient k agreed well with that obtained from the FEM and test results. And it was more precise than those obtained from EC3 based on the strut model.
This paper proposes a simplified elastic-plastic analysis procedure using the penalty factors presented in the Code Case N-779 for strain-based fatigue assessment of nuclear safety class 1 components under severe seismic loads such as safety shutdown earthquake and beyond design-basis earthquake. First, a simplified elastic-plastic analysis procedure for strain-based fatigue assessment of nuclear safety class 1 components under the severe seismic loads was proposed based on the analysis result for the simplified elastic-plastic analysis procedure in the Code Case N-779 and the stress categories corresponding to normal operation and seismic loads. Second, total strain amplitude was calculated directly by performing finite element cyclic elastic-plastic seismic analysis for a hot leg nozzle in pressurizer surge line subject to combined loading including deadweight, pressure, seismic inertia load, and seismic anchor motion, as well as was derived indirectly by applying the proposed analysis procedure to the finite element elastic stress analysis result for each load. Third, strain-based fatigue assessment was implemented by applying the strain-based fatigue acceptance criteria in the ASME B&PV Code, Sec. III, Subsec. NB, Article NB-3200 and by using the total strain amplitude values calculated. Last, the total strain amplitude and the fatigue assessment result corresponding to the simplified elastic-plastic analysis were compared with those using the finite element elastic-plastic seismic analysis results. As a result of the comparison, it was identified that the proposed analysis procedure can derive reasonable and conservative results.
Based on the extended spatial mobilization plane (SMP) criterion, we present an elastic-brittle-plastic solution for an axisymmetric cylindrical tunnel. The influences of the intermediate principal compressive stress and material strain-softening behavior are considered. Closed-form formulas for the critical support force, radius of plastic zone, and distributions of stress and displacement in surrounding rock are proposed. The elastic-plastic solution based on SMP is compared with the Kastner solution to verify the credibility of the obtained elastic-plastic solution. The elastic-brittle-plastic solution following the SMP criterion and the current solution based on the Mohr-Coulomb criterion are also compared. The rock strain-softening rate and the intermediate principal stress affect the stability of the surrounding rock. The results provide guidance for optimizing the design of support systems for tunnels.

Die desig for manufacturing hooks from steel wires has been depended on empirical procedures based on trial and error method. To design die, at first the curvature and bending angle of hook are computed by using AutoCAD and developed program which is composed of Visual Basic. Then spring back should be considered because the elastic recovery of material is very important in bending process. In this study, bending analysis of elastic-plastic materials is applied to predict curvature of hook and spring back. Therefore, systematic procedure of die design for bending hook is achieved to consider elastic recovery in terms of hook shapes. Experimental results are good agreement with calculated results.

The introduction of the Eurocodes makes plastic design criteria available also for composite bridges, leading to more economical solutions compared with previous elastic design rules. Particularly for refurbishment old bridges with higher actual traffic loads, up to date outside the scope of the Eurocodes, strengthening should therefore be avoidable or at least be necessary only to a minor extent. For bridges with smaller spans and compact cross sections, the plastic load bearing capacity is clearly justified. In this work, however, the focus is placed on long span continuous composite bridges with deep, longitudinally stiffened girders, susceptible to local buckling. In a first step, the elastic - plastic cross section capacity of the main girder in bending is studied as an isolated case, based on high preloads acting on the steel girder only, due to the common assembling procedure without scaffolding. In a second step, the effects on the whole structure are studied, because utilising the plastic section capacity at midspan leads to a redistribution of internal forces to the supports. Based on the comprehensive study of an old, actual strengthened composite bridge, some limitations for plastic design are identified. Moreover, fully plastic design will sometimes need additional global analysis. Practical recommendations are given for design purposes.
The plastic collapse loads and their locations are predicted for a class of tapered, initially curved, and transversely corrugated cantilevered beams subjected to static tip loading. Results of both closed form and finite element solutions for several rigid perfectly plastic and elastic perfectly plastic beam models are evaluated. The governing equations are cast in nondimensional form for efficient studies of collapse load as it varies with beam geometry and the angle of the tip load. Static experiments for laboratory-scale configurations whose taper flared toward the tip, complemented the theory in that collapse occurred at points about 40% of the beams length from the fixed end. Experiments for low speed impact loading of these configurations showed that collapse occurred further from the fixed end, between the 61% and 71% points. The results may be applied to the design of safer highway guardrail terminal systems that collapse by design under vehicle impact.

Plastic region tightening is widely used in critical bolted joints in internal combustion engines in order to reduce the engine weight by maximizing the use of load-carrying capacity of bolt. Mechanical behavior of bolt tightened in plastic region under external axial tensile load is investigated for various friction conditions using three dimensional finite element analysis. The behavior of bolt tightened in elastic region as well as that in tensile test are investigated for comparison. Tightening process is simulated by rotating the bolt in order to examine the friction effect realistically. It is revealed that the bolt tightened in plastic region can carry more external load until the joint is opened, and yields at lower bolt load than the bolt tightened in elastic region. The friction coefficient has effect on the yield load, but not on the load-carrying capacity. Moreover, the scatter in the bolt preload due to friction begins with plastic deformation of bolt in the angle tightening control, whereas it begins with the onset of tightening in the torque tightening control. The observations are interpreted with the residual torsional stress in the bolt generated during the tightening.

To secure the structural safety of structures and members against earthquakes, the plastic deformation capacity demand of members should be accurately predicted. In the present study, a method for the evaluation of the plastic deformations of members for moment frames was developed. To facilitate the practical use of the proposed method in equivalent seismic design, the plastic deformations of members were evaluated based on the results of elastic analysis, without using nonlinear analysis. The plastic deformation demands of members were formulated as functions of story drift demand, redistributed moment and member stiffness. Story drift demand and moment redistribution were directly determined from elastic analysis. The proposed method was applied to an 8 story-2 bay moment frame, and the predicted plastic deformations were verified using nonlinear analysis. The results showed that the proposed method could be used to accurately predict the member plastic rotations with simple calculations. The proposed method can be applied both to the earthquake design of new structures and to the performance evaluation of existing structures.
