Titanium and its alloys are useful for implant materials. In this study, porous Ti-Nb-Zr biomaterials were successfully synthesized by powder metallurgy using a $NH_4HCO_3$ as space holder and $TiH_2$ as foaming agent. Consolidation of powder was accomplished by spark plasma sintering process(SPS) at $850^{\circ}C$ under 30 MPa condition. The effect of high energy milling time on pore size and distribution in Ti-Nb-Zr alloys with space holder($NH_4HCO_3$) was investigated by optical microscope(OM), scanning electron microscope(SEM) & energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS) and X-ray diffraction(XRD). Microstructure observation revealed that, a lot of pores were uniformly distributed in the Ti-Nb-Zr alloys as size of about $30-100{\mu}m$ using mixed powder and milled powders. In addition, the pore ratio was found to be about 5-20% by image analysis, using an image analyzer(Image Pro Plus). Furthermore, the physical properties of specimens were improved with increasing milling time as results of hardness, relative density, compressive strength and Young's modulus. Particularly Young's modulus of the sintered alloy using 4h milled powder reached 52 GPa which is similar to bone elastic modulus.

Application of nanotechnology can be used to tailor made cementitious composites owing to small dimension and physical behaviour of resulting hydration products. Because of high aspect ratio and extremely high strength, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are perfect reinforcing materials. Hence, there is a great prospect to use CNTs in developing new generation cementitious materials. In the present paper, a parametric study has been conducted on cementitious composites reinforced by two types of multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) designated as Type I CNT (10-20 nm outer dia.) and Type II CNT (30-50 nm outer dia.) with various concentrations ranging from 0.1% to 0.5% by weight of cement. To evaluate important properties such as flexural strength, strain to failure, elastic modulus and modulus of toughness of the CNT admixed specimens at different curing periods, flexural bending tests were performed. Results show that composites with Type II CNTs gave more strength as compared to Type I CNTs. The highest increase in strength (flexural and compressive) is of the order of 22% and 33%, respectively, compared to control samples. Modulus of toughness at 28 days showed highest improvement of 265% for Type II 0.3% CNT composites. It is obvious that an optimum percentage of CNT could exists for composites to achieve suitable reinforcement behaviour and desired strength properties. Based on the parametric study, a tentative optimum CNT concentration (0.3% by weight of cement) has been proposed. Scanning electron microscope image shows perfect crack bridging mechanism; several of the CNTs were shown to act as crack arrestors across fine cracks along with some CNTs breakage.

This study is to develop equations that consider the elastic modulus ratio of FRP bar and steel reinforcement, shear span to depth ratio, and flexural reinforcement ratio of FRP bar, to determine concrete shear strength of FRP reinforced concrete beams without shear reinforcement. As experimental parameters, 2 types of FRP bar, 3 types of shear span to depth ratio, and 3 types of flexural reinforcement were used. Experimental results for two of shear span to depth ratio were quoted from previous study to evaluate effect of shear span to depth ratio in more detail. Shear strength correction factors needed for evaluating concrete shear strength were proposed from regression analysis using above experimental results. Equations suggested from this study and other codes were examined and compared with 31 experimental results available in the literature. From this comparison, it could be known that the equation suggested from this study gives the most approaching result to experimental results.
This study focuses on having a temperature and water pressure effects on the change of material properties of rocks. Granite and limestone specimens from Gagok Mine were thermally treated with predetermined temperatures of 200, 300, 400, 500, 600 and $700^{\circ}C$ (excepting $700^{\circ}C$ for limestone) to estimate the reduction of material properties of rocks caused by heat. Specific gravity, effective porosity, elastic wave velocity, uniaxial compressive strength, Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio for pre-heated specimens were measured. With increasing temperature, material properties of both rock specimens change sequentially. Significant changes of specific gravity, effective porosity and elastic wave porosity occur above $400^{\circ}C$ for granite and $300^{\circ}C$ for limestone. Changes of uniaxial compressive strength, Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio seem to be similar to those of physical properties. GSI of 500, 600 and $700^{\circ}C$ specimens inferred by using uniaxial compressive strength and Young's modulus of preheated granite specimens is found to be 81, 66 and 58 each. In case of pre-heated limestone specimens of 400, 500 and $600^{\circ}C$, the corresponding GSI is 76, 71 and 65 each. 500, 600 and $700^{\circ}C$ granite specimens and 400, 500 and $600^{\circ}C$ limestone specimens were pressurized to 7.5 MPa and their effective porosity, elastic wave velocity, uniaxial compressive strength and Young's modulus were measured. The average value of material properties (mentioned above) of 500, 600 and $700^{\circ}C$ granite specimens under water pressure compared with material properties of non-pressurized pre-heated specimens exhibits the reduction of 7.6, 11.3 and 14.9%, respectively. In case of 400, 500 and $600^{\circ}C$ limestone specimens under water pressure, the average value of material properties decreases by 8.2, 13.8 and 21.9%, respectively.
An application of the instrumented indentation technique has been expanded from the measurements of hardness and elastic modulus to the analysis of residual stress. A slope of the indentation loading curve increases (or decreases) according to compressive (or tensile) residual stress. A theoretical equation has been established for quantifying residual stress from the slope change. However, a precise observation of the remnant indents is indispensible because the theoretical approach needs actual contact information. In addition, the conventional hardness test is still used for predicting the residual stress distribution of welded joints. Thus, we observed the three-dimensional morphologies of the remnant indents formed on artificial stress states and analyzed stress effects on morphological recovery of the indents. First, a depth recovery ratio, which has been regarded as a sensitive stress indicator, did not show a clear dependency with the residual stress. Thus an analysis on volumetric recovery was tried in this study and yielded a inverse proportional behavior with the residual stress. In addition, an elastic to plastic volume recovery ratio showed more significant correlation with the residual stress.
The lateral stability of bridge foundations against train moving load, emergency stopping load, earthquakes, and so on is very important for a railway bridge foundation. A borehole test is much more accurate than laboratory tests since it is possible to minimize the disturbance of ground conditions on the test site. The representative borehole test methods are Dilatometer, Pressuremeter and Lateral Load Tester, which usually provide force-resistance characteristics in elastic range. In order to estimate P-y curves using those methods, the non-linear characteristics of soil which is one of the most important characteristics of the soil cannot be obtained. Therefore, P-y curves are estimated usually using elastic modulus ($E_O$, $E_R$) of lateral pressure-deformation ratio obtained within the range of elastic behavior. Even though the pile foundation is designed using borehole tests in field to increase design accuracy, it is necessary to use a higher safety factor to improve the reliability of the design. A Large Displacement Borehole Testmeter(LDBT) is developed to measure nonlinear characteristics of the soil in this study. P-y curves can be directly achieved from the developed equipment. Comparisons between measured P-y curves the LDBT developed equipment, theoretical methods based on geotechnical investigations, and back-calculated P-y curves from field tests are shown in this paper. The research result shows that the measured P-y curves using LDBT can be properly matched with back-calculated P-y curves from filed tests by applying scale effects for sand and clay, respectively.
Material properties of a new composite composed of components with known material properties are usually investigated through experiments. Elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio are measured at various volume fractions of mixed components and utilized as the base information on an analytical model for predicting the mechanical behaviors of a structure constructed by the composite. Elastic material properties of a composite at various volume fractions are numerically estimated by minimizing the error between the static displacements computed from a model for the composite and those computed from a model of homogeneous and isotropic material. A finite element model for a composite is proposed to distribute different types of material components easily into the model depending on the volume fraction. Then, the material properties of a composite filled with solid mircospheres are predicted numerically through a sample study and the estimated results are compared with experimental results and some theoretical equations.

Recycled aggregates show high water absorption rate compared to natural aggregates due to microcrack developed during production process and adhered cement pastes at the surface of recycled aggregates. This leads to the deterioration of mechanical properties and slow work flow. Currently it is getting hard to satisfy high demand for natural aggregates. Utilizing recycled aggregate more widely may be a substitutable countermeasure for the shortage of natural resources. In this study, two-stage mixing approach(TSMA) suggested by Tam et al. is used to produce recycled aggregate concrete(RAC) with 100 % replacement of coarse natural aggregate and tests for compressive strength, elastic modulus, and chloride ion diffusion coefficient are conducted to find out the effect of TSMA compared to normal mixing method. According to experimental result compressive strength and elastic modulus of RAC with TSMA was superior to those of RAC with normal mixing irrespective of water-cement ratio, and in some cases mechanical properties of RAC with TSMA approached to those of natural aggregate concrete(NAC). However, chloride ion diffusion coefficient of RAC was higher than that of NAC. This illustrates that TSMA is not an appropriate method in reducing chloride ion diffusion coefficient, resulting in inconsequential contribution of TSMA to the durability of RAC.
The reinforced-roadbed materials composed of crushed stones are used for preventing vertical deformation and reducing impact load caused by highspeed train. Repeated load application can induce deformation in the reinforced-roadbed layer so that it causes irregularity of track. Thus it is important to understand characteristics of permanent deformation in the reinforced-subbase materials. The characteristics of permanent deformation can be simulated by prediction model that can be obtained by performing repetitive triaxial test. The prediction model of permanent deformation is a key-role in construction of design method of track. The prediction model of permanent deformation is represented in usual as the hyperbolic function with increase of number of load repetition. The prediction model is sensitive to many factors including stress level etc. so that it is important to define parameters of the model as clearly as possible. Various data obtained from repetitive triaxial test and resonant column test using the reinforced-roadbed of crushed stone are utilized to develop a new prediction model based on concept of shear-stress ratio and elastic modulus. The new prediction model of permanent deformation can be adapted for developing design method of track in the future.

In this thesis, the fatigue tests were performed on a series of SFRC (steel fiber reinforced concrete)to investigate the flexural tensile behavior of SFRC varying with the steel fiber contents and the steel fiber aspect ratios. Beam specimens of 10$\times$10$\times$60cm are used. the specimen series are classified according to the steel fiber contents varying 0.5. 1.0, 1.5%, and to the steel fiber aspect ratios varying 60, 80, 100. The three point loading system was used in the fatigue tests. The minimum value of repeated loading was fixed at 10.0kgf and maximum value was 75% to static ultimate strength for periodically using concrete strain gages located at the lower end of the mid-span, and the stress-strain curves were drawn for each specimens, respectively. From the tests result, it was found that the larger steel fiber content and the smaller the steel fiber aspect ratio is , the tensile strain of SFRC under fatigue load proportionally increases. By the regression analysis on these results, the empirical formulae to predict the tensile strain of SFRC were suggested. In comparison of the tensile elastic modulus under fatigue load, it was also found that the larger steel fiber content and the smaller steel fiber aspect ratio is , the smaller decreasing rate of the stiffness of SFRC under fatigue load decreased.
