  • In this study, Pasternak foundation model, which is a two parameter foundation model, is used to analyze the behavior of laterally loaded beams embedded in semi-infinite media. Total potential energy variation of the system is written to formulate the problem that yielded the required field equations and the boundary conditions. Shear force discontinuities are exposed within the boundary conditions by variational method and are validated by photo elastic experiments. Exact solution of the deflection of the beam is obtained. Both foundation parameters are obtained by self calibration for this particular problem and loading type in this study. It is shown that, like the first parameter k, the second foundation parameter G also depends not only on the material type but also on the geometry and the loading type of the system. On the other hand, surface deflection of the semi infinite media under singular loading is obtained and another method is proposed to determine the foundation parameters using the solution of this problem.

  • A new mechanical model for predicting the vibration of a pipe pile embedded in longitudinally layered visco-elastic media with radial inhomogeneity is proposed by extending Novak's plain-strain model and complex stiffness method to consider viscous-type damping. The analytical solutions for the dynamic impedance, the velocity admittance and the reflected signal of wave velocity at the pile head are also derived and subsequently verified by comparison with existing solutions. An extensive parametric analysis is further performed to examine the effects of shear modulus, viscous damping coefficient, coefficient of disturbance degree, weakening or strengthening range of surrounding soil and longitudinal soft or hard interbedded layer on the velocity admittance and the reflected signal of wave velocity at the pile head. It is demonstrated that the proposed model and the obtained solutions provide extensive possibilities for practical application compared with previous related studies.

  • Wave propagation in inhomogeneous elastic media is studied by using the Fourier method, where the spatial derivatives are computed by the FFT algorithm, while the time derivatives are expanded into the second order finite different expansion. For numerical examples, wave propagation in the layered half-plane are investigated. The comparisons of numerical and analytic results shows good agreement.

  • On the basis of the semi-linear material of John invoking the theory of homogenization for heterogeneous media and the theory of invariants for isotropic scalar functions an energy function is built for a transversely-isotropic medium in finite elastic deformation. The ponyting Effect for material in simple shear is reviewed for this case of transversal isotropy. It is shown that this effect is apprehended by the constructed energy function.

  • Elastic wave propagation in a multilayered elastic half-plane is studied by using the Cagniard-de Hoop method. After the unknowns are expressed in terms of the reflection and transmission coefficients in the in terms of the reflection and transmission coefficients in the integral-transformed domains they are assmbled to form the global matrix equation. The inverse Laplace transform of each term is done by applying the Cagniard-de Hoop methods. As a numerical example a four-layered half-plane is considered where a point source is applied to the first layer. The method described in the present study can be used in checking other numerical methods such as FDM.

  • In order to make reliable ground shock predictions in saturated geological media, it is necessary to use multi -phase material models and numerical codes. This paper presents the results of theoretical study of the fundamental behavior of multi-phase porous media subjected to high dynanlic loadings, and deals with the development of numerical code MPDAP with JWL(Jones-Wilkins-Lee) model, which is capable of considering the kinds and characters of explosives. To check the global equilhorium equations of the numerical code, we carried out some verifications. In the cases of the elastic spherical wave propagation in a single phase medium, one-dimensional linear ronsolidation, and one timensional wave propagation in saturated linear elastic soils and rocks, the results calculated by MPDAP show close agreement with closed-form solutions or numerical solutions generated with two phase code.

  • The study of behavior and values of deformations in the geological medium makes the scientific basis of the methodology of synthesis of true values of parameters of its physico-mechanical and density properties taking into account the influence of geodynamic impacts. The segments of continuous variation of homogeneous elastic uniform deformations are determined under overall compression of the medium. The limits of these segments are defined according to the criteria of instability (on geometric form changes and on "internal" instability). Analytical formulae are obtained to calculate current and limiting (critical) values of deformations within the framework of various variants of small and large initial deformations of the non-classically linearized approach of non-linear elastodynamics. The distribution of deformation becomes non-uniform in the medium while the limiting values of deformations are achieved. The proposed analytical formulae are applicable only within homogeneous distribution of deformations. Numerical experiments are carried out for various elastic potentials. It is found that various forms of instability can precede phase transitions and destruction. The influence of these deformation phenomena should be removed while the physico-mechanical and density parameters of the deformed media are determined. In particular, it is necessary to use the formulae proposed in this paper for this purpose.

  • The mechanical behavior of granular soils is affected by particle bonding including natural cementation. This study addresses a simple model of small strain stiffness and salt concentration based on wave measurements of salt-cemented particulate media. Published models of artificially cemented soils with different curing methods and several types of cementation agents are reviewed. Glass beads with the median diameter of D50 = 0.5mm are prepared in rectangular cells using the water-pluviated method in salt water with different concentrations. Piezo disk elements and bender elements embedded in the cell are used for the measurements of compressional and shear waves. The relationships between elastic wave velocities and salt concentration show an exponential function. The measured small strain stiffness matches well the predicted small strain stiffness based on micromechanics for simple cubic monosized sphere particles. This study demonstrates that the salt concentration in salt-cemented specimen may be evaluated by using elastic wave velocities.
