The aim of this paper is to examine the effects of children's ego-resilience and social support on exam anxiety and school adjustment. The subjects of this study were 534, $5^{th}$ and $6^{th}$ grade students (275 boys and 259 girls) from the Pusan area. The results of this study revealed that the levels of Ego-resilience and social support correlated negatively with exam anxiety, and positively with school adjustment. Therefore the more ego-resilience and social support children felt that they had, the lower the levels of exam anxiety they experience, and the higher their levels of school adjustment. The influence of ego-resilience on exam anxiety was higher than that of social support and the influence of ego-resilience on school adjustment was similar to that of social support. The implications of the present study were also discussed.
This study examined the influence of family risk factors, ego-resilience, and quality of peer relationships on adolescent problem behaviors in a sample of 335 8th grade students (178 boys and 157 girls). They responded to four kinds of questionnaires. Data were analyzed by independent t-tests, correlations, and multiple regressions. Results showed that family risk factors had direct effects on ego-resilience which directly affected quality of peer relationships. Family risk factors, ego-resilience and quality of peer relationships had direct effects on internalizing problem behaviors. Family risk factors and quality of peer relationships had direct effects on externalizing problem behaviors. Family risk factors indirectly influenced adolescent internalizing/externalizing problem behaviors through ego-resilience and quality of peer relationships.
The purpose of this study was to develop an objective Ego Strength Scale for Children useful in research and clinical fields for measuring the ego strength of 3rd-6th grade children and to test its validity and reliability. For these purposes, we conducted a two-stage study. First, the scale was developed through data collection, composition of components and questions, a preliminary survey, and a main survey. The main survey was conducted with 1,185 3rd-6th grade children in Seoul and Gyeonggi province, and analyzed through exploratory factor analysis and reliability analysis. Second, the scale we developed was validated through confirmatory factor analysis and convergent-discriminant validity analysis for testing validity related to internal structure. The secondary survey was conducted with 5,494 3rd-6th grade children in Seoul and the province of Gyeonggi, Chungcheong, Gangwon, Jeolla, Gyeongsang, and Jeju. The study concluded the following: First, the scale was designed to measure 4 factors: competence, initiative, elasticity, and sociability using 26 questions. Second, the Ego Strength Scale for Children was found to be highly valid through validity tests. In addition, it showed high reliability in an internal consistency test and split-half reliability test. As this study developed and validated the Ego Strength Scale for Children in the current situation in which there are few objective instruments to measure children's ego strength, it is meaningful in that it laid the basis for broader future research on ego strength.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships of ego-resilience, stress coping styles and disposition to delinquency in middle school students. Method: The data were collected from October 15 to October 30, 2005. The subjects were 223 middle school students in 2nd grade in G city. To determine the most effective variable of ego-resilience to stress coping styles and disposition to delinquency, the dada were analyzed using Canonical correlation with SAS 9.1 TS, and Pearson's correlation with percentages, means, standard deviations with SPSS 14.0 K. Result: Ego-resilience showed a significant positive correlation with active coping styles and a significant negative correlation with passive coping styles, and disposition to delinquency. Canonical correlation analysis of 5 sub-domains of ego-resilience showed that curiosity made the highest contribution to predicting stress coping styles and vitality made the highest contribution in predicting disposition to delinquency in middle school students. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that the development of ego-resilience for adolescents is important to improve stress coping strategies and decrease delinquency. Therefore, to increase ego-resilience, Stress Coping Programs should include curiosity and Delinquency Intervention Programs should include vitality.
Objective: This study examined the association between mother-child communication and preschool children's peer competence mediated by ego resiliency Methods: The data from 318 preschool age children and their mothers in Seoul and Gyung-Gi province were used for this study. Mothers reported mother-child communication using three subscales from the revised parent-child communication inventory(Barnes & Oslom, 1982). This study used four subscales from the Korea Personality Inventory for Children (KPI-C)in order to calculate children's ego resiliency and used six subscales from the Child Behavior Scales(Ladd & Profile, 1996). The data were analyzed using Multiple Regression in SPSS 19.0. Results: Positive mother-child communication predicted a higher level of children's ego resiliency and peer competence. Ego resiliency fully mediated the association between mother-child communication and prosocial competence, rejection against peers and insecurity. And positive mother-child communication predicted lower levels of children's aggression, dissociality and irritability. Its association was also mediated by ego resiliency. Conclusion/Implications: These findings indicated that a mother's positive communication with their child would enhance children's ego resiliency and peer competence in preschool children. Thus, the efforts to facilitate parents' positive communication skills in parent education can be promising for preschool children's positive development.
This study investigated the relations between gratitude disposition and the ego-integrity of elderly men and women, focused on generativity and relatedness toward spouse, children, and friends as well as examined gender differences for each path. The subjects were 341 Korean elderly men and women over the age of 60 living in the Busan, Daegu, and Gyeongsang areas. Collected data were analyzed by PASW ver. 18.0 and AMOS 20.0 programs; in addition, frequency, Cronbach ${\alpha}$, Pearson's correlation coefficients, t-test and structural equation modeling were also used for data analysis. The results were as follows. First, the Korean elderly's gratitude disposition had a positive influence on ego-integrity and generativity as well as on relatedness toward spouse, children, and friends. In addition, the relatedness toward spouse, children, and friends of Korean elderly had direct influences on generativity and indirect influences on ego-integrity by mediating generativity. Second, it showed that there was a gender difference in the structural model that explained the relations among the variables. Korean elderly men's relatedness toward spouse, children, and friends had direct effects on generativity. However, in case of Korean elderly women, only relatedness toward children and friends had effects on generativity. The results were discussed in terms of elderly education.

Purpose: This study was done to identify the relationship among ego resilience, the problem solving process and clinical competency in nursing students. Methods: Data were collected by questionnaires from 265 nursing students in D city. Measures were ego resilience, problem solving process and clinical competency. Data was analyzed using frequency analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA, person's correlation coefficients, and multiple regression analysis with SPSS/WIN 19.0 version. Result: The Ego resilience score of subjects was 2.80 out of a perfect score of 4, the problem solving process score of subjects was 3.12, and the clinical competency score of subjects was 3.49 out of a perfect score of 5. There was a significant positive correlation among ego resilience, problem solving process and clinical competency. The significant predictors of problem solving process and clinical competency were ego resilience. Conclusion: These findings indicate that there is a need to increase ego resilience to improve the problem solving process and clinical competency of nursing students. The results should be reflected in the development of effective curricula.
An educational program through therapeutic recreation was developed in order to analyze the effect of enhancement of ego integrity of the elderly. First of all, this study was designed to summarize the concepts of ego integrity and the effects of therapeutic recreation on the elderly and to identify elderly's educational needs of both educational methods and contents from the literature review. The above identified knowledge and information were applied to developing the educational program. The program was composed of 6 sessions with 17 old men and women focused on developing self acceptance using reminiscence on ego integrity through their whole life span and developing positive and active attitudes towards life. And enforcing and evaluation methods were also suggested. The results were as follows. This program showed the significant differences between post-test and pre-test scores in the scale of ego integrity of the elderly. In conclusion, educational program through therapeutic recreation employed for this study has significant effects of increasing ego integrity of the elderly.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify relationships between experiential activity, ego-resilience, sense of community, and school life adjustment of middle school students and to provide the basic data that can contribute to the activation of experiential activities. Methods: 2,351 middle school students of panel survey conducted by National Youth Policy Institute were used in the final analysis. The structural equation model(SEM) was carried out to analyze structural relationships between experiential activity and ego-resilience, sense of community, and school life adjustment of the youth. IBM SPSS Statistics 20.0 and IBM SPSS AMOS 20.0. were used for the analysis of all data. Results: Experiential activities had a statistically significant positive effect on ego-resilience(p<0.001), school life adjustment(p<0.05), and the sense of community (p<0.001). Especially experiential activities acted on ego-resiliency, a sense of community, school life adjustment as an important parameter. Sense of community also showed to be an important mediating role between ego-resiliency and school life adjustment. Conclusions: In order to maximize the effectiveness of experiential activities, it is necessary to build the community networking enough to take full advantage of community resources and develop various experiential activities to meet the needs of youth and social change.
This study examined the relationships among children's perspectives on achievement-oriented parenting style, ego-resilience, school adjustment, and academic achievement. In order to analyze the associations, the study conducted a secondary analysis of the data found in the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS) 2010-2011, which was a non-randomized controlled study designed with a longitudinal follow-up. We analyzed 1,212 students who were in the fourth and fifth grade at elementary school with Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The results were as follows. First, higher achievement-oriented parenting style was associated with higher ego-resilience that contributed to higher academic achievement and higher school adjustment. Second, higher achievement-oriented parenting style was directly related to lower academic achievement and lower school adjustment. The findings support that children's ego-resilience is an important factor to improve school adjustment and academic achievement. In addition, the achievement-oriented parenting style is not helpful for their children's school outcomes (such as academic achievement and adjustment) even though parenting style improved their children's ego-resilience. Ego-resilience that is developed by achievement-oriented parenting style is likely to enhance children's school adjustment and academic achievement. The study presents policy and practice implications, limitations and areas for further research.
