Retinal in the Eggs of Phylum Chordata: A Novel Storage Mode of Retinoid

  • The presence of retinals (retinal and 3,4-didehydroretinal) has been known in the eggs of wide range of oviparous vertebrates, but the biological significance of the egg retinals has yet to be clarified. We here show that retinals are the major components of retinoids in the eggs of all species of chordate animals we examined. The egg retinals were commonly bound to egg yolk proteins, the storage proteins, via a Schiff base linkage. The Schiff base linkage, which protects the reactive aldehyde group, would negate the toxicity of aldehyde, and enable to accumulate much amount of retinals. The retinals in chordate eggs are considered to be the precursor of functional retinoids, such as photoreceptive pigment chromophores and retinoic acid, during development. The results of the present research strongly suggest that retinals in the eggs of oviparous chordates are the common and essential mode of retinoid storage.

  • A water loaded pressure device using water as the breaking force was developed to evaluate eggshell strength and compared with a dropping ball techniques. Further, relationships of shell thickness and weight of eggs to shell strength were also studied. Values for both of the shell strength measuring methods showed a highly significant correlation (p < 0.001) with shell thickness. The water loaded pressure method had a much higher simple correlation coefficient for shell thickness (r = + 0.786) than the dropping ball method (r = + 0.577). The shell strength measured by the water loaded pressure method appeared not to be correlated to egg weight. On the other hand, the negative sign of the standard partial regression coefficient and the partial regression coefficient of egg weight in the estimated multiple regression equation implied that for a given shell thickness a larger egg tended to have less shell strength than a smaller egg.

  • There are considerable reports that the expression of insulin-like growth factor-Ⅰ (IGF-Ⅰ) is related to ovarian regulation and oviductal development in poultry. Korean Native Ogol Chicken (KNOC) have been inbred to keep a pure line so that there has been limitation in the improvement of egg productivity by genetic studies.   • In this paper, a laryngeal function identification system based-on the EGG signal is proposed as the decision basis whether the laryngeal function is normal or abnormal. The normal EGG signal is approved an autoregressive model which has the optimal order of 9. It can be analized by determining the transfer function. But it is not meaningful that the determi- nation is made using the transfer function of an autoregressive model on the abnormal EGG signal. The power spectral analysis was applied to discriminate the normal or abnormal cases. The SNR of the EGG signal was enhanced by the optimal position of electrodes.

  • Electrogastrography(EGG) has been an attractive method for physiological and pathophysiological studies of the stomach and now is on the verge of becoming a new clinical tool in gastroenterology. In this study EGG measurement system was constructed and running spectrum analysis was developed for three-dimensional display of power spectrum with time. The noninvasive technique of EGG is an excellent alternative since the established invasive methods for the study of the stomachs of children and infants.

Survival Strategies of the Rotifer Brachionus rotundiformis for Coexisting with the Copepod Apocyclops borneoensis in Laboratory Culture

  • Interspecific relationship between a euryhaline rotifer Brachionus rotundiformis and a cyclopoid copepod Apocyclops borneoensis was investigated in the laboratory culture. In a mixed culture of B. rotundiformis and A. borneoensis, population growth of B. rotundiformis was suppressed from day 10, while growth in a monoculture population continuously increased throughout the experimental period. However, the population growth of A. borneoensis in the mixed culture did not markedly differ from that in a monoculture population. Suppression of B. rotundiformis growth coincided with a decrease in the numbers of both non-egg-bearing and egg-bearing females, and increasing resting egg formation. Growth of A. borneoensis was not affected by the presence of the rotifer. However, relative growth index of ovisac bearing females in the mixed culture was 1.62 times higher than that in the monoculture. Presence of the copepod did not greatly reduce the food available to the rotifer population. The rotifer B. rotundiformis responded in a unique way, to stresses such as physical damage (filtering by A. borneoensis) with the production of many resting eggs to increase its chances of survival.

  • The present study describes the effectiveness of egg yolk antibodies (IgY) against enteric colibacillosis and edema disease in piglets. The antibodies were gained from the egg yolk of hens immunized with k88, k99, 987p fimbrial adhesin and heat-labile toxin antigens of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC). Orally-administered egg yolk antibodies solution protected against experimental challenge with ETEC $K88^+$ and $k99^+$ strains in neonatal piglets and mice. In field trial, a total of 598 diarrheal piglets were orally treated with 3ml of antibody once a day to determine for the therapeutic effect. Of them, 582 (97.3%) piglets were recovered from diarrhea in 3 days. We also experimentally treated with the egg yolk antibodies twice a day for 5 consecutive days for 94 weaning piglets with edema disease for the determination of therapeutic effects. Seventy four piglets (78.7%) were recovered from clinical edema signs. Theses findings indicate that egg yolk antibodies against k88, k99, 987p and LT of ETEC are useful source of passive immunity for enteric colibacillosis and edema disease of piglets.

  • Immunogenicity of Escherichia coli pilus and LT were evaluated in 20-week-old hens. The antigens were consisted of K88, K99, 987p pilus and heat labile toxin purified from enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli. The durations of antibody titers in sera and egg yolk were investigated by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA). After first inoculation, antibody titers in sera reached at peak 2 weeks postinoculation. However, peak antibody titers in egg yolk were detected 4 weeks postinoculation, indicating that transfer of immunoglobulin from serum to egg yolk took about two weeks period. Although there were slight reduction in titers, the specific antibodies in egg yolk lasted up to 3 months. Immune responses against monovalent and combined antigens were showed as almost same patterns. The transfer rate of antibodies from serum to egg yolk didn't show any significant differences among three pilus antigens in this study. Considering the concentrations of antigens in each inoculated group, multivalent antigens containing heat labile toxin of E coli were found to be more immunogenic than monovalent antigen in producing specific antibodies. From this experiment, it was demonstrated that multivalent antigens containing three pilus and heat labile toxin could be a promising candidate for the production of egg yolk antibodies for prophylactic use in preventing swine colibacillosis in future.

Effects of Feeding Dried Leftover Food on Productivity of Laying Hens

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of different levels of dried leftover food (DLF) in the diet on feed utilization and egg-laying performance of hens. One hundred sixty-eight, 18 week old Tetra brown commercial layers, were assigned to 7 treatments in a completely randomized design. Each treatment has four replications per treatment with six animals per replication. All the experimental animals were fed diets for 7 weeks. The treatments included 1) control group without DLF, 2) diet with 10% DLF, 3) diet with 20% DLF, 4) diet with 30% DLF, 5) 10% higher protein level of diet with 10% DLF, 6) 20% higher protein level of diet with 20% DLF and 7) 30% higher protein level of diet with 30% DLF. Average daily feed intake (ADFI) tended to be improved with DLF feeding. ADFI of group fed diets with 20% was significantly higher than that of control (p<0.05). Feed conversions of DLFfed groups were higher than that of control. Egg production tended to be higher in groups fed diets with 10% DLF than control diet without significant differences (p>0.05). However, those of groups fed diets containing 20 and 30% DLF were lower than that of control. Supplementing protein source to DLF-containing diets improved egg production (p<0.05). Increasing level of DLF in the diet for layer decreased egg weight and egg mass compared to control without significant differences (p>0.05). Protein supplementation to DLF-containing diets increased egg mass without significant difference (p>0.05). The range of egg cholesterol concentration of DLF-fed groups was 11.94-14.10 mg/g while that of control group was 12.31 mg/g although there was no significant difference among treatments (p>0.05).

Examination of Economic Performance of Egg Type Breeder Lines for the Selection of Fowl-Typhoid Resistant Breed (가금티푸스 저항성 계통 선발을 위한 산란종계의 경제능력 검정에 관한 연구)

  • A preliminary experiment was conducted to produce fowl-typhoid resistant egg type breeds, using three brown egg layer breeders (ISA, Hyline, and Lohman) and two white egg layer breeders (ISA and Lohman). Various economic parameters were measured from day-old to mature stages using parent stocks of each breed. No significant difference in viabilities of mature hens from 34 to 66 wk of ages was found between brown(93.3%) and white(93.5%) egg layer breeders (P>0.05). Also, there was no difference in viabilities of mature cockerels. Although not significant, the mature body weights of brown egg layer breeders tended to be heavier than those of the white egg layer breeders both in hens and cockerels. No difference in feed intakes of mature brown and white hens were detected. Ages of sexual maturity of white and brown egg layer hens were 147.7 and 140.5 d, respectively (P<0.05). Egg production of white egg layer hens during 23-66 weeks age was significantly higher than their counterpart (81.4% vs. 75.0%). Comparisons of Haugh Unit, egg shape index, yolk color, and egg weight between brown and white eggs were not significantly different; however, the brown eggshells were thicker and stronger than those of white eggs (P<0.05).
