So many drinking water treatment plants are under various difficulties by new reinforced effluent standards. Since the target turbidity, much higher than annual average, for designing sludge thickener have to be set to confront high turbidity season, the sludge at thickener should be put up for a long time during usual days. So the soluble manganese and chloroform may be formed under the anaerobic environment in the sludge thickener when the sludge retention time is longer with low turbidity. This phenomenon results in difficulties to keep regulatory level of the discharged effluent. For an effort to overcome the problems, a sludge aeration was successfully implemented into the thickening process. As a result, the final effluent quality and sludge volume were much improved; 41 % of manganese, 62 % of chloroform and 35 % of sludge volume. Additionally, effluent quality was improved ; 61 % of Manganese on aeration with pH control and we could make sure of stability effluent quality despite a long sludge retention time. We recommended the standard of installation sludge aeration equipment to nationally supply water treatment plant under effluent water quality problem ; Manganese, Chloroform, etc.
This study was performed to investigate the disinfection efficiency and the formation characteristics of disinfection by-products(DBPs) by chlorination in the sewage effluent. The effluent was sampled from the sewage treatment plants operated in the activated sludge process and the advanced sewage process. The type of DBPs investigated were Trihalomethanes(THMs), Dichloroacetonitrile(DCAN), Chloral hydrate(CH), Dichloroacetic acid(DCAA), Trichloroacetic acid(TCAA). Major findings are as follows. First, the optimum injection concentration for chlorination in sewage effluent were found to be in the range $0.5{\sim}1.0mg\;cl_2/L$. Also, It was found that the chlorine dosage in the effluent of activated sludge process was higher than in the effluent of advanced sewage process. Second, the maximum formation concentration of THMs were $12.7{\mu}g/L$. The THMs formation reaction was finished in a short time of several seconds and chloroform was mainly formed. Also, it was found that the concentration of ammonium nitrogen is higher, the concentration of THMs is lower. Third, it was found that DCAA and TCAA were mainly formed as DBPs by disinfection.

Analysis of fish farm influences on stream water quality may provide basic informations on watershed management to reduce environmental impact due to fish farm development and to conserve stream water quality in forested watershed area. In this research stream water qualities around Mt. Baegun area were monitored seasonally for three years. Due to the increase of pH in effluent water from the fish farm it was believed that alkalization of stream water can be accelerated by large scale development of fish farms in the forested watershed area. As a result of regression analyses, the linear equation of pH of influent and effluent water of fish farm was, pH of effluent water of fish farm = $0.6234{\times}pH$ of influent water of fish farm + 2.6263. Also, the linear equation of electrical conductivity of influent and effluent water of fish farm was electrical conductivity of effluent water of fish farm = $1.7275{\times}$electrical conductivity of influent water of fish farm - 14.007. Negative effects on stream water quality were observed by indications of increase in electrical conductivity and water temperature of effluent water from the fish farm. Decreases in physicochemical indices such as the amount of dissolved oxygen, total amount of cation and total amount of anion in effluent water from the fish farm were also negative aspects in downstream ecology. It is recommended that water purification system as well as environmentally-friendly fish farm design should be incorporated to large scale fish farm development plan in forested watershed area.

The main purpose of this research is to find suitable treatment methods of wastewater effluent for artificial recharge. For this purpose, we search the effluent quality of wastewater treatment plant and possibility of additional filtration process. Particles ranged 2 ~ 5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 15~20 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in "T" WWTP(Waste Water Treatment Plant) effluent were relatively dominant. In dual-media filtration system operation, head-loss development of column 1 was about two times faster than column 2, and head-loss development within 5 cm from surface was very important factor in operation, Conclusively, for the stable filtration and running time of 1.5~2 day, influent turbidity must keep 5 NTU or below, and filtration system must operated at 280 m/day or below. After filtration of WWTP effluent, water quality reached satisfactory level. This water has potential of agricultural reusing, flushing water in building, recharging water to river or stream at dry season and artificial recharge of ground water.und water.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to characterize penicillin G resistant bacteria in surface water from pharmaceutical complex effluent. Methods: Surface water was sampled from pharmaceutical complex effluent in Gyeonggi-do Province, Korea in March 2015. Water samples were plated in triplicate on tryptic soy agar plates with 32 mg/L of penicillin G. Penicillin G resistant bacteria were selected from the effluent and subjected to 16S rRNA analysis for the penicillin G resistant species determination. Identified resistant strains were tested for resistance to various antibiotics. Results: Penicillin G resistant bacteria were present at 8.0% in terms of culturable heterotrophic bacteria. Identified penicillin G resistant bacteria exhibited resistance to more than nine of the antibiotics studied. These resistant bacteria are gram negative and are closely related to pathogenic species. Conclusion: Multi-antibiotic resistant bacteria in the surface water of pharmaceutical complex effluent suggest the need for disinfection and advanced oxidation processed for pharmaceutical effluent.

Difference of total coliforms (TC) survival time of mixed samples (effluent were mixed by seawater or freshwater) were examined in various conditions. The time taken to achieve a 90% reduction in the TC concentration ($T_{90}$) of effluent, high initial TC concentration and low initial TC concentration samples indicated 143.9, 121.9 and 89.6 hours at $25^{\circ}C$, respectively. At $4^{\circ}C$, log removal rate after 336 hours were 0.96, 1.04, and 1.30. TC survival time of effluent-inoculated seawater sample was longer than that of effluent-inoculated freshwater sample in laboratory. At outdoor condition, TC inactivation curves of effluent-inoculated seawater or freshwater samples showed similar patterns. And both of them were greatly influenced by climate condition. There was not enough evidence that TC survived longer in freshwater than sea water. It was unlikely that the salinity of sea water contributed to the inactivation process of TC.

Ballast water effluent treated by an electrolytic method contains reactive chlorine species and disinfection by-products (DBPs). In this study, we conducted whole effluent toxicity (WET) testing and ecological risk assessment (ERA) to investigate its ecotoxicological effects on marine environment. WET testing was carried out for three marine pelagic organisms, i.e., diatom Skeletonema costatum, rotifer Brachionus plicatilis and fish Paralichthys olivaceus. The biological toxicity test revealed that S. costatum was the only organism that showed apparent toxicity to the effluent; it showed no observed effect concentration (NOEC), lowest observable effect concentration (LOEC) and effect concentration of 50% (EC50) values of 12.5%, 25.0% and 83.3%, respectively, at brackish water condition. In contrast, it showed insignificant toxicity at seawater condition. B. plicatilis and P. olivaceus also showed no toxicities to the effluent at the both salinity conditions. Meanwhile, chemical analysis revealed that the ballast water effluent contained total residual oxidants (TROs) below $0.03{\mu}g/L$ and a total of 20 DBPs including bromate, volatile halogenated organic compounds (VOCs), halogenated acetonitriles (HANs), halogenated acetic acids (HAAs) and chloropicrin. Based on ERA, the 20 DBPs were not considered to have persistency, bioaccumulation and toxicity (PBT) properties. Except monobromoacetic acid, the ratio of predicted environmental concentration (PEC) to predicted no effect concentration (PNEC) of the other 19 DBPs did not exceed 1. Thus, our results of WET testing and ERA indicated that the ballast water effluent treated by electrolysis and subsequently neutralization was considered to have no adverse impacts on marine environment.
This paper studies the effect of industrial waste water effluent charge reform. The goal of the present effluent charge system is to use environmental resources in an efficient way by charging the cost for removing emitted water pollutants. However, the present system is a type of regulation instead of providing economic incentives to the industry. That is, if a firm emits pollutants greater than the limit, it has to pay an amount greater than the cost of cleaning them taking into account the amount of waste water discharged, region, the number of violation and the level of density of pollutants. However, the excessive fees have resulted in the lowest ratio of revenue-to-effluent charge among all environmental charges. The paper estimates the effect of the change in effluent fee and revenue when the present effluent charge system is converted to one that offers economic incentives. The results show that the amount of waste water effluent charge is about four times larger than the estimated environmental cleaning cost. In addition, the results show that by modifying the effluent charge system, the ratio of revenue to effluent charge can be raised.
This study looked at how to establish effluent limitation standards for formaldehyde, a toxic chemical widely used in industries. To this end, we reviewed Water Quality Based Effluent Limitation (WQBEL), Technology Based Effluent Limitation (TBEL), and water quality criteria for protection of human health and aquatic organism. Based on the results, we estimated formaldehyde effluent limitation standards appropriate to control water quality of industrial wastewater in Korea. However, this study has limits due to the lack of some data necessary in estimating formaldehyde effluent limitation. For example, although water quality criteria based on non-carcinogenic properties of formaldehyde were calculated, those based on carcinogenic properties were not be able to estimate because of the absence of applicable cancer potency factor q1. Without applicable factor, we calculated water quality standards for formaldehyde based on water quality criteria of advanced countries including the United States, while with no water quality standard we referred to applicable drinking water quality standards of other countries. For eco-toxicity based on water quality criteria, proper figures could not be calculated since there have been few reliable data.
As the Enforcement Ordinance of Environmental Policy Act was revised in 2013, total organic carbon(TOC) was added as an indicative parameter for organic matter in Water and Aquatic Ecosystem Environmental Criteria. Under these imminent circumstances, a regulatory standard is needed to achieve the proposed TOC limitation control water quality from the public sewage treatment plants(PSTWs). This study purposes to present the determination method for TOC effluent limitation at the PSTWs. Therefore we investigate the TOC effluent limitation of foreign countries such as EU, Germany and USA, and analyse the effluent water qualities of PSTWs. In using these TOC data, we review apprehensively the statistics-based, the technology-based, and the region(water quality)-based determination method of TOC effluent limitation for PSTWs.
