Efficient Load Balancing Scheme using Resource Information in Web Server System (웹 서버 시스템에서의 자원 정보를 이용한 효율적인 부하분산 기법)

  • The exponential growth of Web users requires the web serves with high expandability and reliability. It leads to the excessive transmission traffic and system overload problems. To solve these problems, cluster systems are widely studied. In conventional cluster systems, when the request size is large owing to such types as multimedia and CGI, the particular server load and response time tend to increase even if the overall loads are distributed evenly. In this paper, a cluster system is proposed where each Web server in the system has different contents and loads are distributed efficiently using the Web server resource information such as CPU, memory and disk utilization. Web servers having different contents are mutually connected and managed with a network file system to maintain information consistency required to support resource information updates, deletions, and additions. Load unbalance among contents group owing to distribution of contents can be alleviated by reassignment of Web servers. Using a simulation method, we showed that our method shows up to $50\%$ about average throughput and processing time improvement comparing to systems using each LC method and RR method.

  • In distributed systems data are replicated and stored at several nodes to increase the availability and overall performance. Here Quorum protocol doffing a certain set of replicas required for read/write operation exists for global concurrency control. One of the representative replication Protocols - the Tree Quorum protocol - has a drawback of rapidly growing number of replicas as the level increases, while the Grid protocol requires the same operation cost even without any failure. In this paper, thus, we propose a new replication protocol called hybrid protocol which capitalizes the merits of the existing protocols and solves the problems of them at the same time. The proposed hybrid protocol has very low operation cost in the absence of failure like the tree quorum protocol, and has relatively lower operation cost and higher availability than existing protocols when failure occurs by employing tree architecture as the overall organization while each level of the tree is organized as a row of a grid architecture. It is thus effective to be applied to survival storage system. We conduct cost and availability analysis of the proposed protocol through mathematical modeling, and response time and throughput are compared with those of the Tree Quorum protocol through computer simulation.

Anticancer Activity of the Antimicrobial Peptide Scolopendrasin VII Derived from the Centipede, Scolopendra subspinipes mutilans

  • Previously, we performed de novo RNA sequencing of Scolopendra subspinipes mutilans using high-throughput sequencing technology and identified several antimicrobial peptide candidates. Among them, a cationic antimicrobial peptide, scolopendrasin VII, was selected based on its physicochemical properties, such as length, charge, and isoelectric point. Here, we assessed the anticancer activities of scolopendrasin VII against U937 and Jurkat leukemia cell lines. The results showed that scolopendrasin VII decreased the viability of the leukemia cells in MTS assays. Furthermore, flow cytometric analysis and acridine orange/ethidium bromide staining revealed that scolopendrasin VII induced necrosis in the leukemia cells. Scolopendrasin VII-induced necrosis was mediated by specific interaction with phosphatidylserine, which is enriched in the membrane of cancer cells. Taken together, these data indicated that scolopendrasin VII induced necrotic cell death in leukemia cells, probably through interaction with phosphatidylserine. The results provide a useful anticancer peptide candidate and an efficient strategy for new anticancer peptide development.

An efficient channel searching method based on channel list for independent type cognitive radio systems (독립형 무선 인지 시스템에서 채널 목록 기반의 효과적 채널 검색)

  • In this paper, we consider an independent type cognitive radio system where secondary users can utilize empty channels that are not currently used by primary users having the license to these channels. In the previous works, secondary users search channels sequently or randomly to detect activities of primary user on channels. These channel searching methods however are not suitable to the characteristics of the wireless environment. Therefore, we propose a channel searching method based on the channel list for the purpose of reducing the channel searching time and improving the throughput of secondary users. In the proposed method, we firstly determine weighting value of each channel based on the history of channel activities of primary users and add the weighing value to current channel state buffer. And then, we search an empty channel from channel with smallest value to one with the biggest value. Finally, we compare the performances of the proposed method with those of the sequential channel searching and the random channel searching methods in terms of average channel searching time and average number of transmissions of secondary user.

Efficient Connection Scheduling Technique for Hosting Internet Services on a Cluster of Servers (서버 클러스터에서의 인터넷 서비스를 위한 효율적인 연결 스케줄링 기법)

  • A cluster of servers is the most promising solution to provide highly scalable and highly available network services with low implementation cost. One of popular solutions is using dispatcher as a request distributor. However this solution has the problem that is can be the bottleneck or single-point of failure point of itself. ONE-IP, the previous work, solves this serious problem by using broadcast message for distributing the request packet in LAN. Using simple scheduling technique, in addition, the overhead due to dispatching the request becomes minimal. However, as ONE-IP using very simple static scheduling algorithm, it would spread the request among servers unevenly and downgrades the cluster performance consequently. In this paper, we propose an improved TCP connection scheduling technique solving this unbalanced distributing problem. Using Round-Robin(RR) scheduling instead of hashing clients IP address, proposed technique can more evenly distribute incoming service requests among the servers. Experiments show average 3.8% improved performance in throughput compared to original ONE-IP technique.

  • Adaptive Cyclic Packet Dropping algorithm (ACPD), and Non-adaptive Cyclic Packet Dropping algorithm (NCPD) are applying stricter drop precedence than that of RIO algorithm. Especially, the ACPD algorithm drops adaptively packets for the congestion control, as predicting traffic pattern between each cycle. Therefore the ACPD algorithm makes up for the drawback of RIO algorithm and minimizes the wastes of the bandwidth being capable of predicting in the NCPD algorithm. And we executed a simulation and analyzed the throughput and packet drop rate based on Sending Priority changing dynamically depending on network traffic. In this algorithm, applying strict drop precedence policy, we get better performance on priority levels. The results show that the proposed algorithms may provide more efficient and stricter drop precedence policy as compared to RIO independent of traffic load. The ACPD algorithm can provide better performance on priority levels and keep stricter drop policy than RIO and the NCPD algorithm.

  • In recent years, users\` demands for multimedia service are increasing because of a diffusion of internet. Server systems, however, offer inefficient multimedia data service to users. Multimedia applications often transfer the same data between shared devices at very high rates, and therefore require an efficient I/O subsystem. Data copying and context switching have long been identified as sources of I/O inefficiency. Therefore we propose the new Multimedia Stream System Call (MSSC) mechanism, which is inserted into a Linux kernel: The MSSC mechanism operates in kernel domain with RTP (Real-time Transport Protocol). We present measurements indicating that use of our techniques resulted in a 12.5%∼14% gain in throughput as compared with a conventional Linux system.

  • Cluster based VOD systems require elaborate load balancing and buffer management techniques in order to ensure real-time display for multiuser concurrently. In this paper, we propose a new load balancing technique based on the dynamic buffer partitioning in cluster based VOD servers. The proposed technique evenly distribute the user requests into each service node according to its available buffer capacity and disk access rate. In each node, the dynamic buffer partitioning technique dynamically partitions the buffer to minimize the average waiting time for the requests that access the same continuous media. The simulation results show that our proposed technique decreases the average waiting time by evenly distributing the user requests compared with the exiting techniques and then increases the throughput in each node. Particularly under the overloaded condition in the cluster server, the simulation probes that the performance of the proposed technique is better two times than the Generalized Interval Caching based technique.

  • Data in a image compression codec are processed with a specific regular block size. The processing order of block sized data is changed in specific function blocks and the data is packed in memory and read by a new sequence. To maintain a regular throughput rate, double buffering is normally used that interleaving two block sized memory to do concurrent read and write operations. Single buffering using only one block sized memory can be adopted to the simple data reordering, but when a complicate reordering occurs, irregular address changes prohibit from implementing adequate address generating for single buffering. This paper shows that there is a predictable and recurring regularity of changing address access orders within a finite updating counts and suggests an effective method to implement. The data reordering function using suggested idea is designed with HDL and implemented with TSMC 0.18 CMOS process library. In various scan blocks, it shows more than 40% size reduction compared with a conventional method.

Adaptive Packet Scheduling Scheme to Support Real-time Traffic in WLAN Mesh Networks

  • Due to multiple hops, mobility and time-varying channel, supporting delay sensitive real-time traffic in wireless local area network-based (WLAN) mesh networks is a challenging task. In particular for real-time traffic subject to medium access control (MAC) layer control overhead, such as preamble, carrier sense waiting time and the random backoff period, the performance of real-time flows will be degraded greatly. In order to support real-time traffic, an efficient adaptive packet scheduling (APS) scheme is proposed, which aims to improve the system performance by guaranteeing inter-class, intra-class service differentiation and adaptively adjusting the packet length. APS classifies incoming packets by the IEEE 802.11e access class and then queued into a suitable buffer queue. APS employs strict priority service discipline for resource allocation among different service classes to achieve inter-class fairness. By estimating the received signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) per bit and current link condition, APS is able to calculate the optimized packet length with bi-dimensional markov MAC model to improve system performance. To achieve the fairness of intra-class, APS also takes maximum tolerable packet delay, transmission requests, and average allocation transmission into consideration to allocate transmission opportunity to the corresponding traffic. Detailed simulation results and comparison with IEEE 802.11e enhanced distributed channel access (EDCA) scheme show that the proposed APS scheme is able to effectively provide inter-class and intra-class differentiate services and improve QoS for real-time traffic in terms of throughput, end-to-end delay, packet loss rate and fairness.
