  • This article deals with a Causal-Loop analysis of the characteristics of Ouroboros effects. The meaning of the effects is that solutions to problems are usually intended as final fixes, but more often than not, while solving one problem, they generate more problems. It means 'to worsen through attempts to make better.' The Ouroboros effects are very dangerous because they are regarded as a kind of self-destructive mechanisms. While existing researchers recognize the risks of the effects, they are not able to solve the systematic problem but only to describe the symptom. Such a way to deal with the effects results in difficulty to clarify the cause-and-effect relationship within the system. Thus the authors are focusing on explaining the effects by SD (System Dynamics), which are considered as the sole methodology to do effectively so far since SD is a great tool to discover structural causes. To solve the self-destructive problem of the effects, the authors analyze the characteristics of several cases of the effects in elaborating the CLD (Causal Loop Diagram) for each case. The analysis reveals the structural characteristics of the effects and how to correct them towards maintaining the sustainability of systems.

  • In this study, we attempt to examine the economic impacts of the CCS marine geological storage demonstration project in Korea using Input-Output analysis utilizing the inter-industry relation table issued in 2013. In particular, this study defines the $CO_2$ ocean storage industry and then added the inter-industry relation table and treated the $CO_2$ ocean storage industry as exogenous. In addition, this study assumed two scenarios based on the means of $CO_2$ transport, which are pipe and ship. After defining the industry and scenarios, this study investigates the production-inducing effect, value added inducing effect, and employment-inducing effect of the industries associated with the $CO_2$ ocean storage industry based on a demand-driven model. The results pertaining to the scenarios are estimated as follows: total production-inducing effects, value added inducing effects, and employment-inducing effects are calculated as 1.9044 won, 1.2487 won and 16.7224 people/billion won, respectively. In addition, compared to other industries, the indirect economic impacts of the $CO_2$ ocean storage industry are ranked high: the rankings of production-inducing effects, value added inducing effects, and employment-inducing effects are fourth, second, and fifth, respectively.

  • This study analyzes the seismic response of traffic light poles, considering soil-foundation effects through nonlinear static and time history analyses. Two poles are investigated, uni-directional and bi-directional, each with 9 m mast arms. Finite element models incorporate the poles, soil, and concrete foundations for analysis. Results show that the initial stiffness of the traffic light poles decreases by approximately 38% due to soil effects, and the drift ratio at which their nonlinear behavior occurs is 77% of scenarios without considering soil effects. The maximum acceleration response increases by about 82% for uni-directional poles and 73% for bi-directional poles, while displacement response increases by approximately 10% for uni-directional and 16% for bi-directional poles when considering soil-foundation effects. Additionally, increasing ground motion intensity reduces soil restraints, making significant rotational displacement the dominant response mechanism over flexural displacement for the traffic light poles. These findings underscore the importance of considering soil-foundation interactions in analyzing the seismic behavior of traffic light poles and provide valuable insights to enhance their seismic resilience and safety.

  • This study attempted to investigate the mediating effects of self-efficacy in the influence of appearance management behavior and life satisfaction among middle-aged women. For this, a questionnaire survey was performed among 153 women aged 40-59 living in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. The collected data were analyzed by frequency analysis, cross-tabulation analysis, t-test, ANOVA, Duncan's test, reliability analysis, and correlation analysis, using SPSS 25.0. To examine mediating effects, SPSS Process MACRO #4 was borrowed, and the results found the following: 1) A positive correlation with statistical significance was observed among appearance management behavior, self-efficacy, and life satisfaction. 2) According to the analysis of appearance management behavior, self-efficacy and life satisfaction by demographic characteristics, some differences were found. 3) The mediating effects of self-efficacy in appearance management behavior and the life satisfaction relationship was confirmed. The above results show that middle-aged women experience an increase in self-efficacy through appearance management behavior and improvements in their life satisfaction through such self-efficacy, not just enhancing life satisfaction through appearance management behavior. In other words, appearance management increases life satisfaction through an ego-discovery process.
