The subsurface stress field beneath the gear's contact surface caused by the contact pressure in lubricated condition has been calculated. To evaluate the influence of the clearance shape on the stress field, two kinds of tooth profile models were chosen. One is the conventional cylinder contact model and the other is the new numerical model. Love's rectangular patch solution was used to obtain the subsurface stress field. The analysis results show that the subsurface stress is quite dependent on both the contact pressure and the profile model. The maximum effective stress of the new model is lower than that of the old model. The depth where the maximum effective stress occurs in the new model is not proportional to the intensity of the external load.
The sub-surface stress field beneath the gear's contact surface caused by the surface pressure in lubricated condition is analyzed. To evaluate the influence of the clearances between a gear tooth and a pinion tooth on the stress field, two kinds of tooth profile models - conventional cylinder contact model and new numerical model - were chosen. Kinematics of the gear is taken into account to obtain the numerical model which is the accurate geometric clearances between a gear tooth and a pinion tooth. Transient elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) analysis is performed to get the surface pressure. The sub-stress field is obtained by using Love's rectangular patch solution. The analysis results show that the sub-surface stress is quite dependent on both the surface pressures and the profile models. The maximum effective stress of the new model is lower than that of the old model. The depth where the maximum effective stress occurs in the new model is not proportional to the intensity of the external load.
1D sand compression response to ko-loading experiences volume contraction from low to high effective stress regimes. Previous study suggested compressibility model with physically correct asymptotic void ratios at low and high stress levels and examined only for both remolded clays and natural clays. This study extends the validity of Enhanced Terzaghi model for different sand types complied from 1D compression data. The model involved with four parameters can adequately fit 1D sand compression data for a wide stress range. The low stress obtained from fitting parameters helps to identify the initial fabric conditions. In addition, strong correlation between compressibility and the void ratio at low stress facilitates determination of self-consistent fitting parameters. The computed tangent constrained modulus can capture monotonic stiffening effect induced by an increase in effective stress. The magnitude of tangent stiffness during large strain test should not be associated with small strain stiffness values. The use of a single continuous function to capture 1D stress-strain sand response to ko-loading can improve numerical efficiency and systematically quantify the yield stress instead of ad hoc methods.

The George Massey immersed tunnel passes the Fraser River near Vancouver, Western Canada. In this paper, dynamic analysis of the tunnel on sandy soils was performed using an effective stress constitutive model called UBCSAND. This model is able to calculate pore pressure rise and resulting tunnel deformation due to cyclic loading. Centrifuge tests conducted at RPI are used to verify the model performance. Centrifuge tests consist of 3 models: Model 1 is designed for an original ground condition, Model 2 for a ground improvement by compaction method, Model 3 for a ground improvement by gravel drainage. The results of centrifuge Model 1 are presented and compared with predictions of UBCSAND model. This model well captured the results of centrifuge test and therefore can be used to predict dynamic behavior of similar tunnels or underground structures on sandy soils.

Seismic risk analysis was performed based on the total stress and effective stress of caisson type quay wall and pier type quay wall. In order to consider the effective stress effect, the pore pressure of the ground was distributed, using Byrne(1991) simple formula to estimate parameter and applied to the finn model. Through the results of seismic risk analysis according to the total stress and effective stress analysis method, the necessity of effective stress analysis in the seismic design of the quay wall installed on the soft ground was confirmed.
In this study, the intrinsic static/dynamic fracture toughness of Al 7175=T74 is evaluated from the apparent static/ dynamic toughness of notched specimen, The critical average stress fracture model is suggested to establish the relationship to predict the intrinsic fracture toughness from the apparent fracture toughness of a notched specimen. The critical average stress fracture model is established using the relation between the notch root radius and the effective distance calculated by finite element analysis. In this study an effective stress numerical procedure is used to assess the results of dynamic centrifuge tests under high effective stress. The centrifuge models consist of loose Nevada sand with an initial vertical effective stress of 380kPa at depth, and they are modeled as a one-dimentional soil column. Liquefaction occurred up to 37m or 22m at depth, and the onset of liquefaction triggering was opposite to the conventional liquefaction evaluation procedure. In other words, liquefaction occurs first at the top and propagates downward as shaking continues. The results observed in centrifuge tests are reasonably predicted by the effective stress model. It is noted that the degree of initial saturation and additional densification at depth arising from the application of the high acceleration field play a key role in capturing the results of dynamic centrifuge tests.
The shear strength of unsaturated soils, a research hotspot in geotechnical engineering, has great guiding significance for geotechnical engineering design. Although kinds of calculation models for the shear strength of unsaturated soil have been put forward by predecessors, there is still need for new models to extensively consider the nonlinear variation of shear strength, particularly for the nonlinear effect of the net normal stress on the shear strength of unsaturated soil. Here, the shear strength of unsaturated soils is explored to study the nonlinear effects of net normal stress with the introduction of a general nonlinear Mohr-Coulomb (M-C) strength criterion, and the relationship between the matric suction (or suction stress) and degree of saturation (DOS) constructed by the soil-water characteristics curve (SWCC) of van Genuchten is also applied for unsaturated soil. Then, two calculation models (i.e., an envelope shell model and an effective stress model) are established for the shear strength of unsaturated soils under the nonlinear strength theory. In these two models, the curve of the shear strength of unsaturated soils versus the net normal stress exhibits a tendency to gently. Moreover, the proposed formulas have flexibility and convenience with five parameters (for the effective stress model) or six parameters (for the envelope shell model), which are from the M-C strength parameters of the saturated soil and fitting parameters of SWCC of van Genuchten. Thereafter, by comparison with the classical theory of the shear strength of unsaturated soils from some actual cases, the rationality and accuracy of the present models were verified.

This study is concerned with the application of an analytical model of cyclic crack growth that includes the effects of crack closure. The crack closure model is based on the Dugdale model and the strip model, considering the plasticity-induced closure which is caused by residual plastic deformation remaining in the wake of an advancing crack. This study is performed to get the relation between crack growth and crack opening stress with the constant stress ratio, and the relation between stress ratio and crack opening stress with the constant maximum stress under constant-amplitude loading. Under constant-amplitude loading, the crack opening stress is conversed the constant value as a crack grows and is proportion to both the stress ratio and the maximum stress. The crack closure effect, however, is decreased in the positive stress ratio and disappeared at about 0.7. The crack growth analysis using the crack closure model shows that the influence of stress ratio is minimized in the relation between crack growth ratio and effective stress intensity range specially at the negative stress ratio.
An experimental study has been carried out on square plain concrete (PC) and reinforced concrete (RC) columns strengthened with carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets. A total of 78 specimens were loaded to failure in axial compression and investigated in both axial and transverse directions. Slenderness of the columns, number of wrap layers and concrete strength were the test parameters. Compressive stress, axial and hoop strains were recorded to evaluate the stress-strain relationship, ultimate strength and ductility of the specimens. Results clearly demonstrate that composite wrapping can enhance the structural performance of square columns in terms of both maximum strength and ductility. On the basis of the effective lateral confining pressure of composite jacket and the effective FRP strain coefficient, new peak stress equations were proposed to predict the axial strength and corresponding strain of FRP-confined square concrete columns. This model incorporates the effect of the effective circumferential FRP failure strain and the effect of the effective lateral confining pressure. The results show that the predictions of the model agree well with the test data.
