  • Conventional reinforced concrete design codes assume ideal strain evolution in semi-deep beams with externally bonded fiber-reinforced polymer (EB-FRP) web strips. However, there is a strain interaction between internal stirrups and web strips, leading to a notable difference between code-based and experimental shear strengths. Current study provides an experiment-verified detailed numerical framework to assess the potential strain interaction under quasi-static monotonic load. Based on the observations, steel stirrups are effective only for low EB-FRP amounts and the over-strengthening of semi-deep beams prevents the stirrups from yielding, reducing its shear strength contribution. A notable difference is detected between the code-based and the study-based EB-FRP strain values, which is a function of the normalized FRP stress parameter. Semi-analytical relations are proposed to estimate the effective strain and stress of the components considering the potential strain interaction. For the sake of simplification, a linearized correction factor is proposed for the EB-FRP web strip strain, assuming its restraining effect as constant for all steel stirrup amounts.

  • The bonded tendon was adopted to the reactor building of some operating nuclear power plants in Korea and the assessment of the effective prestress force on the bonded tendon is being issued as an important pending problem for continuous operation beyond their design life. The sensitivity analysis of various parameters was carried out to evaluate the effective prestress force using the system identification technique and the optimal parameters were determined for SI technique in this study. The 1/5 scaled post-tensioned concrete beams with the bonded tendon type were manufactured and in order to investigate the relationship of the natural frequency and the displacement to the effective prestress force, impact test, SIMO sine sweep test and bending test using the optical fiber sensor and the compact displacement transducer were carried out. As a result of tests, both the natural frequency and the displacement show the good relationship with the effective prestress force and both parameters are available for the SI technique to estimate the effective prestress force.

  • Objective: This study provides strategies of how to effectively convert an invention, created at universities or government-funded research institutes, into a strong patent with the clear understanding of its unique technological characteristics. Background: Regardless of the amount of research funds available in our country and the decent number of intellectual property rights created using the funds, there was a deficit of more than KRW 6 trillion in the technology trade balance related with intellectual property rights in the year of 2014. One of the reasons was that the vast number of patents that were being produced by universities or by government-funded research institutes were merely performance-based patents, namely, so called "patents for patents". Another reason is that developed technology from research and development could not be transformed into a strong patent right properly due to the lack of related knowledge. Method: After reviewing various references mentioned on the patent strategies, the definition of a strong patent and the strategies of producing a strong patent for an invention drawn out from research performance will be supplied. Results: To produce a strong patent right at universities or government funded research institutes, one should use strategies for strong specifications, strategies of product patents and method patents, strategies of patent portfolios, strategies of know-how, strategies of inventions defined by numerical limitation and strategies of parameter inventions for a more strategic approach. Conclusion: Strong patent rights will be produced with the use of effective patent strategies provided in this study. Application: It is estimated that the results of this study will aid the establishment of strong patents for inventions developed by research performance at universities or government-funded research institutions.

  • This papers focuses on remanufacturing processes in a closed loop supply chain. The remanufacturing processes is considered as one of the effective strategies for enterprises' sustainability. For this reason, a lot of companies have attempted to apply remanufacturing related methods to their manufacturing processes. While many research studies focused on the return rate for remanufacturing parts as a control parameter, the relationship with demand certainties has been studied less comparatively. This paper considers a closed loop supply chain environment with remanufacturing processes, where highly fluctuating demands are embedded. While other research studies capture uncertainties using probability theories, highly fluctuating demands are modeled using a fuzzy logic based ambiguity based modeling framework. The previous studies on the remanufacturing have been limited in solving the actual supply chain management situation and issues by analyzing the various situations and variables constituting the supply chain model in a linear relationship. In order to overcome these limitations, this papers considers that the relationship between price and demand is nonlinear. In order to interpret the relationship between demand and price, a new price elasticity of demand is modeled using a fuzzy based nonlinear function and analyzed. This papers contributes to setup and to provide an effective price strategy reflecting highly demand uncertainties in the closed loop supply chain management with remanufacturing processes. Also, this papers present various procedures and analytical methods for constructing accurate parameter and membership functions that deal with extended uncertainty through fuzzy logic system based modeling rather than existing probability distribution based uncertainty modeling.

  • In this paper, a method to predict the fatigue life of an axle drive shaft by the calibrated accelerated life test (CALT) method is proposed. The CALT method is very effective for predicting lifetimes, significantly reducing test time, and quantifying reliability. The fatigue test is performed by considering two high stress and one low stress levels, and the lifetime at the normal stress level is predicted by extrapolation. In addition, in this study, the major reliability parameters such as the lifetime, accelerated power index, shape parameter, and scale parameter are determined by conducting various experiments. The lifetime prediction of the axle drive shaft is verified by comparing the experimental results with load spectrum data. The results confirm that the CALT method is effective for lifetime prediction and requires a short test time.

  • The use of waste tires and industrial wastes such as fly ash (FA) and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) in concrete is an important issue in terms of sustainability. In this study, the effect of parameters affecting the physical, mechanical and microstructural properties of FA/GGBS-based geopolymer concretes with waste rubber fiber was investigated. For this purpose, the effects of rubber fiber percentage (0.6%, 0.9%, 1.2%), binder (75FA25GGBS, 50FA50GGBS, 25FA75GGBS) and curing temperature (75 ℃, 90 ℃ and 105 ℃) were investigated. The Taguchi-Grey Relational Analysis (TGRA) method was used to obtain optimum parameter levels of rubber fiber geopolymer concrete (RFGC). The slump, fresh and hardened density, compressive strength, flexural strength, static and dynamic modulus of elasticity, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) tests and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis were performed on the produced concretes. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) method was used to statistically determine the effects of the parameters on the experimental results. A confirmation test was performed to test the accuracy of the optimum values found by the TGRA method. With the increase of GGBS percentage, the compressive strength of RFGC increased up to 196%. The increase in rubber fiber percentage and curing temperature adversely affected the mechanical properties of RFGC. As a result of TGRA, the optimum value was found to be A1B3C1. ANOVA results showed that the most effective parameter on the experimental results was the binder with 99% contribution percentage. It is understood from the SEM images that the optimum concrete had a denser microstructure and less capillary cracks and voids. For this study, the use of the TGRA method in multiple optimization has proven to provide very useful and reliable results. In cases where many factors are effective on its strength and durability, such as geopolymer concrete, using the TGRA method allows for finding the optimum value of the parameters by saving both time and cost.

  • Analyzing functions with small values of the product of position and frequency uncertainties have many advantages in image processing and data compression. Until now, this values has been computed based on the uncertainty principle, but the computed frequency uncertainty is not practical the human visual filters which have on-zero peak response frequencies. A new metric for the frequency uncertainty is used to calculate a deviation about the frequency which has maximum response. The joint effective widths for various functions are derived. As the result of analysis, the joint uncertainty for many functions converges to 0.5 as the joint parameter increases. Furthermore. Gabor cosine function shows an excellent performance among the mentioned functions.

  • Dynamic compaction has evolved as an acceptable method of site improvement by treating poor soils in situ. The method is often an economical alternative for utilizing shallow foundations and preparing subgrades for construction when compared with conventional solutions. In general, the installation purpose of dynamic compaction are to increase bearing capacity and decrease differential settlement within a specified depth of improvement. This method involves the s systematically dropping large weights onto the ground surface to compact the underlying ground. The weights used on dynamic compaction projects have been typically constructed of steel plates, sand or concrete filled steel shells, and reinforced concrete. Typically, weights range from 5-20 ton and base configurations are, circular or octagonal. In this study, the effective depth of improvement is evaluated based on the numerical analysis code, the dynamic analysis of FLAC-3D program, in order to analyze the influence parameters ; ground conditions, maximum applied load and the area of compaction plate.

  • The analysis and design of skeletal structures is greatly influenced by the behaviour of beam-to-column connections, where patented designs have led to a wide range of types with differing structural quantities. The behaviour of beam-to-column connections plays an important role in the analysis and design of framed structures. This paper presents an overview of the influence of connection behaviour on structural stability, in the in-plane (bending) mode of sway. A computer-based method is presented for geometrically nonlinear plane frames with semi-rigid connections accounting for shear deformations. The analytical procedure employs transcendental modified stability functions to model the effect of axial force on the stiffness of members. The member stiffness matrix were found. The critical load has been searched as a suitable load parameter for the loss of stability of the system. Several examples are presented to demonstrate the validity of the analysis procedure. The method is readily implemented on a computer using matrix structural analysis techniques and is applicable for the efficient nonlinear analysis of frameworks. Combined with a parametric column effective length study, connection and frame stiffness are used to propose a method for the analysis of semi-rigid frames where column effective lengths are greatly reduced and second order (deflection induced) bending moments in the column may be distributed via the connectors to the beams, leading to significant economies.

  • The objective of this study is to present an efficient measurement method of the effective thermal diffusivity for the fibrous insulation material. The non-linear parameter estimation (NPE) method is adapted for this analysis because of its accuracy and its results are compared with those by other direct methods such as CTP, CHP and STD method. A experimental system is constructed with bell-jar vaccum chamber, diffusion pump, tube type furnace, control unit and data acquisition system included with A/D converter and IBM XT/AT personal computer. The typical results obtained from this study are as follows; 1) NPE method can be recommended as an useful and accurate method to measure the effective thermal diffusivity of insuation material because it is shown that the measurement error compared with those by other direct methods is reduced for standard material, NBS-1450b. 2) NPE method can minimize the effects of ill-measured temperature due to external disturbance, because the final value is found by point to point estimating. 3) NPE method dose not depend on the kinds of heat flux, since the surfac temperature are used to estimate the thermal diffusivity. 4) With NPE method, compared with the steady state method, a measuring time and a sample size could be reduced.
