  • In this paper, a disturbance observer based sliding mode control is proposed to attenuate disturbance responses in an active magnetic bearing system, which is subject to base motion. An algorithm which decouples disturbance observation dynamics from sliding mode dynamics is suggested. This algorithm preserves the robustness of the sliding mode control and satisfies reachability condition in the presence of external disturbance and parameter uncertainties. Along with experimental results, it is shown that the proposed control is effective in disturbance rejection without any additive disturbance measurement.

  • A diffusion-influenced pseudo-first order reversible reaction A + B ⇔C + B is investigated by the molecular dynamics (MD) simulation method. Theoretical finding that the temporal evolution of reactants [conditional probabilities] in the reversible system can be expressed by the irreversible survival probability with an effective rate parameter is confirmed even in the presence of solvent particles. We carry out molecular dynamics simulations for both the irreversible and the reversible cases to evaluate the survival and the conditional probabilities for each cases. When the resultant irreversible survival probability is inserted into the proposed relation, the conditional probabilities given by the simulation are exactly reproduced.

  • Sulfur Hexafluoride, S $F_{6}$ is widely used for leak detection and as a gaseous dielectric in transformers, condensers and circuit breakers. S $F_{6}$ gas is also effective as a cleanser in the semiconductor industry. This paper presents a numerical study of the sealing force of disk type seal in S $F_{6}$ gas safety valve. The sealing force on the disk seal is analyzed by the FEM method based on the Taguch's experimental design technique. Disk seals in S $F_{6}$ gas safety valve are designed with 9 design models based on 3 different contact length, compressive ratio and gas pressure. The calculated results of Cauchy stress and strain showed that the sealing characteristics of Teflon $^{ }$PTFE is more effective compared to that of FKM(Viton), which is related to the stiffness of the materials. And also, the contact length of the disk seal is important design parameter for sealing the S $F_{6}$ gas leakage in the safety valve.afety valve.

  • The more or less homogeneous fuel-air mixture that exists at the end of the compression process is ignited by an electric ignition spark from a spark plug shortly before top dead center. The actual moment of ignition is an optimization parameter; it is adapted to the engine operation so that an optimum combustion process is obtained. Brake mean effective pressure (BMEP) of the spark ignition energy control device (IECD) than conventional spark system at the stoichiometric mixture is increased about 9%. For lean burn engine, the lean limit is extended about 25% by using the IECD. It was considered the stability of combustion by the increase of flame kernel according to the high ignition energy supplies in initial period and discharge energy period lengthen by using the IECD.

  • Dicalcium silicate has many polymorphs according to temperature. $\beta$-dicalcium silicate which exists in cement is stabilized by minor components drived from raw materials regardless of temperature, such as high temperature and room temperature. K2O, SO3 and B2O3 are effective stabilizers for $\beta$-dicalcium silicate at room temperature. B2O3 was the most effective stabilizer. Transformation from $\beta$ to ${\gamma}$ phase causes dicalcium silicate to change volume, resulting in dusting phenomenon. When B2O3 was used the phase transformation is the least than any other stabilizers. In addition, the starting temperature of quenching influences phases transformation : low temperature of quenching presented much phase transformation and decreased size of parameter of $\beta$-dicalcium silicate.

  • This study presents the application of genetic algorithms(GA) to the back analysis of tunnels. GA based on the theory of natural evolution, and have been evaluated very effective for their robust performances, particularly for optimizing structure problems. In the back analysis method, the selection of initial value and uncertainty of field measurements influence significantly on the analysis result. GA can improve this problems through a probabilistic approach. Besides, this technique have two other advantages over the back analysis. One is that it is not significantly affected by the form of problems. Another one is that it can consider two known parameter simultaneously. The propriety of this study is verified as the comparison in the same condition of the back analysis(Gens et al, 1987). In this study, it was performed to estimated the geotechnical parameters in the case of weak rock mass at the Kyung Bu Express railway tunnel. GA have been shown for effective application to a geotechnical engineering.

  • Homogenization method is adopted to predict the permeability tenor for glass fiber plain woven fabrics. Calculating the permeability tensor numerically is an encouraging task because the permeability tensor is a key parameter in resin transfer molding (RTM). Based on multi-scale approach of the homogenization method, the permeability for the micro-unit cell within fiber tow is computed and compared with that obtained from flow analysis for the same micro-unit cell. It is found that they are in good agreement. In order to calculate the permeability tensor of macro-unit cell for the plain woven fabrics, the Stokes and Brinkman equations which describe inter-tow and intra-tow flow respectively are employed as governing equations. The effective permeabilities homogenized by considering intra-tow flow are compared with those obtained experimentally. Control volume finite element method (CVFEM) is used as a numerical method. It is shown that the asymptotic expansion homogenization method is an attractive method to predict the effective permeability for heterogeneous media.

  • A study of forced convection in a circular pipe with a partially filled porous medium was numerically investigated. The Brinkman-Forchheimer extension of the Darcy model was used to analyze the and temperature distribution in the porous medium. Our study includes two types of porous layer configurations: (1) a layer attached at the tube wall extending inward towards the centerline and (2) a layer at the centerline extending outward. The effect of several parameters, such as Darcy number, effective viscosity, effective thermal conductivity, and inertia parameter, as well as the effect of geometric parameters, were investigated.

  • The main features of a dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguide are analyzed such as mode effective index and propagation length. These parameters are calculated using the finite element method for different metal-polymer pairs while varying the ridge width and thickness. As a performance metric, we employ the 2D figure of merit including two conflicting parameters i.e. mode effective index and propagation length. The results obtained here allow one to identify the parameter range for realizing the dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguide and to choose dimension and material of the ridge for subwavelength confinement and moderate propagation loss at telecom wavelengths.

  • The release of gas from the LPG storage tank by the rupture or leakage can occure explosion and this causes serious damage to people and structures. In this study, the explosion effect and damaging distance were measured for the LPG cloud explosion to perform the quantitative risk assessment for the PSM, and the effective parameters on the explosion were found. The gas dispersion and mass contaminant in the explosion limits were calculated by using DEGADIS, and it was converted to TNT equivalency and damaging distance. As a result, the wind speed was the most effective parameter on the diffusion rate and TNT equivalency, and the damaging distance were increased with decrease of wind speed and surface roughness.
