  • This study was to evaluate disinfection efficiency of chlorine and chloramine as secondary disinfectants in the distribution systems. Indicator organism, HPC in the suspended and attached were measured for copper, galvanized steel, PVC, and carbon steel pipes. For suspended microorganism, the PVC pipe was markedly dense among the assessed pipe materials. The attached microorganism was markedly equivalent roughness of pipe materials. In copper and galvanized pipes, chloramine was more effective that free chlorine to disinfect suspended microorganism in the contact time of 2 hours. The contact time for the 99% inactivation of suspended microorganism by chloramine was longer than that of free chlorine. Regardless of pipe materials, chloramine was effective on both disinfection efficiency and 99% inactivation time for attached microorganism. In conclusion, chloramine which is good disinfectant for long contact time was recommended as secondary disinfectant in distribution system.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate strength and water purification characteristics of effective microorganism-applied volcanic ash block using flexural strength test and water quality analysis. The specimens were prepared with volcanic ash from Mt. Baekdusan and Mt. Hallasan, and cement as the ratios of 3.5:1, 4.0:1, 4.5:1, 5.0:1 with and without metakaolin. Flexural strength degraded with increasing of the amount of volcanic ash, and increased with addition of metakaolin as a binder. Based on these results, the optimal ratio for fabricating volcanic ash-cement mixture block is determined as 3.5:1 with metakaolin. Furthermore, from water quality analysis on contaminated water, removal ability of effective microorganism-applied volcanic ash-cement mixture block and caged volcanic ash block against T-N, T-P and SS was highly evaluated because of adsorption due to the large specific surface area of volcanic ash. Hence, volcanic ash-cement mixture block and caged volcanic ash block possibly contribute to water purification.

  • The study was conducted to determine the antioxidant activity of EM (Effective Microorganism) fermented glasswort liquid for utilizing as a functional food material. Glasswort leaves by freezing-dried were showed the highest 20.19% contents, it was 20% salt contents of cooked salts. To compare antioxidant effects of glasswort plant parts (dried ground leaves, stems, and roots of glasswort) were exploited for investigation of antioxidant activity. Antioxidant activity for the samples was investigated by TBA (Thiobarbituric acid reactive method). EM fermented glasswort liquid from coastal region, the highest antioxidative activity showed in the oven-dried leaves at 14 days after storage. It was showed antioxidant effect more than 5.3 times than control. In conclusion, antioxidative effect of glasswort was apparently exhibited through measurement of TBARS (Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances).

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the growth of lettuce last for 36 days. Lettuce planted on the same medium with different treatment. The first treatment watering using bio-fertilizer (farmer) and second watering using effective microorganism. Lettuce grown in greenhouse with temperature $18-32^{\circ}C$.Characteristic observed that growth in height and weight of the plants. From the observations that can be generated at high observation, treatment 1 had a higher than treatment 2. On the last day treatment plant with treatment 1 had a 99.8 mm high while treatment 2 has height of 90.7 mm. Observation on severe treatment 1 has a heavier weight than treatment 2. Plants with treatment 1 have a weight on the last day of 0.15665 grams while in plants with treatment 2 weights are 0.11365 grams.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the water purification properties of bio-composites planting blocks using oyster shell and effective microorganism that have high absorption ability of heavy metals and organics to develop environmentally friendly river embankment technique contained various factors such as oyster shells, effective microorganism, porous concrete and planting embankment block. To maximize greening effect, the seeds were arbitrarily sown. In addition, in order to analyze the effect of water quality purification after the planting, the samples were collected from each designated zone 1, 7 and 30 days after steeping in water. Then, the samples were analyzed in terms of seven test items such as SS, BOD, COD, T-N, T-P, pH, etc. on the basis of the test method for water pollution. The following conclusions were reached from the test result. As a result of analysis for water quality purification for the concrete block containing the effective microorganism, it was found that the values for SS, BOD, T-N and T-P for the sample taken after 30 days were lower than the initial values, which indicated that the water purification effect had been created. The result of the water quality purification analysis for the concrete block containing oyster shell showed that the values for SS, BOD, COD and T-P for the sample taken after 30 days were lower than the initial values which also indicated that it had been effective in water quality purification.

  • Herbs and plants widely used for the ecological restoration were selected for germination rate analysis under treatment of microorganisms to determine ideal treatment conditions and medium for enhanced germination rate. Albizzia julibrissin, when submerged in a nutrient medium or distilled water, presented a decrease in germination period rather than increase in germination rate. When treated with microorganism culture solution (JM-2) for 24 hours, 90% germination was achieved in two days, which is sufficient evidence to conclude that such treatment accelerates the germination of Albizzia julibrissin. Germination period decreased for Lespedeza cyrtobotrya samples submerged in microorganism solution for 15 and 48 hours, however, increases in germination rates were not observed. Sample treated in the solution for 24 hours had increased germination rate and enhanced germination period. Microorganism solution treatment had a negative effect on germination for Lespedeza cuneata, unlike Lespedeza cyrtobotrya and Albizzia julibrissin. Microorganism treated seeds of Lepsedeza cuneata had a lower germination rate than that of the control with no treatment. However, submerging treatments in a nutrient medium or distilled water for 24 to 48 hours were proven effective with higher germination rates than control sample with no treatment. • This study was carried out to screen and select the effects of antifungal bacterial strains which inhibit the growth of plant pathogen, Fusarium oxysporum(fusarium wilt) occurred in carnation plants in greenhouse. We isolated an effective bacterial strains and investigated into the antifungal activity of the antagonistic microorganism and it's identification. Twenty bacterial strains which strongly inhibited Fusarium oxysporum were isolated from roots of carnation plants and the soil in greenhouse, and the best antifungal bacteria designated as C121, was finally selected. Antagonistic bacterial strain, C121 was identified to be the genus Bacillus sp. based on the morphological, biochemical and cultural characterizations. The Bacillus sp. C121 showed 58.1% of antifungal activity against the growth of Fusarium oxysporum. By the bacterialization of the cultural broth and the heat bacterialization culture filtrate of it, Bacillus sp. C121 was shown 92.1% and 21.0% of antifungal activity, respectively.

  • This research was carried out to establish the effective treatment condition and characteristic of wastewater from the electroplating plant of cold rolling mill by using microorganism. Alkaline wastewater and acidic heavy metal wastewater accounted for 64%, 30%, respectively, of the total wastewater. Highly concentrated thiocyanate was 53890 mg/L as COD and it was 53% of total COD, even though it was 0.03% of wastewater from the electroplating plant. When treating mixed wastewater with microorganism, it was easy to remove when SCN concentrations of mixed wastewater was 200 mg/L or less. While the treatment effect of COD-causing materials was low at the concentration of 400 mg/L or less, it implies that highly concentrated thiocyanate contains a large amount of slowly biodegradable organics. When treating with mixed wastewater, pH was 7.33 at the beginning, but after 8 hours it increased to 7.99. This is caused by ammonia which is generated when SCN of highly concentrated thiocyanate was degraded by microorganism.
