  • $CoSb_3$-based skutterudite compounds are candidate materials for thermoelectric power generation in the mid-temperature range (600 - 900 K) because their thermoelectric properties can be enhanced by doping and filling. The joining property of thermoelectric module electrodes containing thermoelectric materials is of great importance because it can dominate the efficiency of the thermoelectric module. This study examined the properties of $CoSb_3$/Al/Ti/CuMo joined by the spark plasma sintering technique. Titanium thin foil was used to prevent the diffusion of copper into $CoSb_3$ and Aluminum thin foil was used to improve the adhesion between $CoSb_3$ and Ti. The insertion of an Aluminum interlayer between the Ti and $CoSb_3$ was effective for joining $CoSb_3$ to Ti by forming an intermediate layer at the Al-$CoSb_3$ boundary without any micro cracks. Specifically, the adhesion strength of the Ti/Al/$CoSb_3$ joining interface showed a remarkable improvement compared with our previous results, without deterioration of electrical property in the interface.

$SF_6$+Ar 혼합기체의 전리 및 부착계수에 관한 연구 (The Study on the Electron ionization and Attachment Coefficients in $SF_6$+Ar Mixtures Gas)

  • In this paper, we describe the results of a combined experimental theoretical study designed to understand and predict the dielectric properties of SF$_{6}$ and SF$_{6}$+Ar mixtures. The electron transport, ionization, and attachment coefficients for pure SF$_{6}$ and gas mixtures containing SF$_{6}$ has been analysed over the E/N range 30~300[Td] by a two term Boltzmann equation and by a Monte Carlo Simulation using a set of electron cross sections determined by other authors, experimentally the electron swarm parameters for 0.2[%] and 0.5[%] SF$_{6}$+Ar mixtures were measured by time- of- flight method, The results show that the deduced electron drift velocities, the electron ionization or attachment coefficients, longitudinal and transverse diffusion coefficients and mean energy agree reasonably well with the experimental and theoretical for a rang of E/N values. Electron energy distribution functions computed from numerical solutions of the electron transport and reaction coefficients as functions of E/N. We have calculated $\alpha$,η and $\alpha$-η the ionization, attachment coefficients, effective ionization coefficients, and (E/N), the limiting breakdown electric-field to gas density ratio, in SF$_{6}$ and SF$_{6}$+Ar mixtures by numerically solving the Boltzmann equation for the electron energy distribution.   • In case of a fire in road or railway tunnel it is always necessary to keep the escape condition as good as possible. Most of the victims of major fires in tunnels are because they couldn't leave the tunnel in time and were trapped by smoke, or rescue teams couldn't reach the place of the accident due to low visibility and high temperature. In spring 2003 a comprehensive field experiment was undertaken in a large scaled tunnel in Youngin City to test the effectiveness of a new water spray curtain system, designed to the air qualify inside of a tunnel in case of fire during passenger's escape to safe routes, In order to control the smoke propagation, fixed water sprayed nozzles were used to make water curtain system, which can be installed or hanging water piping line below ceiling. The experiment was accompanied by an extensive measurement campaign in order to measure temperature dropping effect and flow conditions as well as CO concentration for various water sprayed curtains produced by sprinkler heads or water spray nozzle. Eventually comparison analysis were undertaken to investigate the performance of water curtains under fixed water pressure. Therefore most effective water curtain system was presented on the basis of water droplet size in long tunnel.

  • 매트형태의 연소촉매를 사용하는 촉매연소 버너는 발생 열을 원적외선 형태로 피 가열체에 공급할 수 있기 때문에 저온 공정에서 효율적으로 열을 사용할 수 있다. 매트형태 촉매연소 버너의 활용 가능성을 높이기 위해 촉매연소버너를 제작하고 구조에 따른 연소성능에 대해 고찰하였다. 확산식 촉매연소에서는 연소면의 방향이 연소반응에 많은 영향을 주며, 촉매 주위 온도변화에 따른 산소의 확산속도 차이가 촉매 연소 반응 속도에 많은 영향을 주는 것을 알았다. 예혼합 촉매연소에서 연소공기는 이론공기량 보다 조금 많게 공급하는 것이 최적이고, 연소열의 70% 이상이 복사로 전달됨을 알았다.

  • The emergency response modeling system CARIS has been developed at CCSM (Center for Chemical Safety Management), NIER (National Institute of Environmental Research) to track and predict dispersion of hazardous chemicals for the environmental decision support in case of accidents at chemical or petroleum companies in Korea. The main objective of CARIS is to support making decision by rapidly providing the key information on the efficient emergency response of hazardous chemical accidents for effective approaches to risk management. In particular, the integrated modeling system in CARIS consisting of a real-time numerical weather forecasting model and air pollution dispersion model is supplemented for the diffusion forecasts of hazardous chemicals, covering a wide range of scales and applications for atmospheric information. In this paper, we introduced the overview of components of CARIS and described the operational modeling system and its configurations of coupling/integration in CARIS. Some examples of the operational modeling system is presented and discussed for the real-time risk assessments of hazardous chemicals.

Simplex PCR Assay for Detection of blaTEM and gyrA Genes, Antimicrobial Susceptibility Pattern and Plasmid Profile of Salmonella spp. Isolated from Stool and Raw Meat Samples in Niger State, Nigeria

  • The global evolution of antibiotic resistance has threatened the efficacy of available treatment options with ravaging impacts observed in developing countries. As a result, investigations into the prevalence of antibiotic resistance and the role of plasmids are crucial. In this study, we investigated the presence and distribution of blaTEM and gyrA genes, plasmid profiles, and the antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of Salmonella strains isolated from raw meat and stool sources across Niger State, Nigeria. Ninety-eight samples, comprising 72 raw meat and 26 stool samples, were screened for Salmonella spp. The antimicrobial susceptibility of Salmonella isolates to 10 commonly used antimicrobial agents was determined using the KirbyBauer disc diffusion method. Isolates were further analyzed for plasmids, in addition to PCR amplification of beta-lactamase (blaTEM) and gyrA genes. A total of 31 Salmonella spp. were isolated, with 22 from raw meat (70.97%) and 9 from stool (29.03%). Salmonella spp. with multiple resistance patterns to ceftazidime, cefuroxime, ceftriaxone, erythromycin, ampicillin, cloxacillin, and gentamicin were detected. Ofloxacin and ciprofloxacin were found to be the most effective among the antibiotics tested, with 67.7% and 93.5% susceptible isolates, respectively. Nine (29.03%) isolates harbored plasmids with molecular sizes ranging between 6557 bp and 23137 bp. PCR amplification of gyrA was detected in 1 (3.23%) of the 31 isolates while 28 isolates (90.32%) were positive for blaTEM. This study shows the incidence of antibiotic resistance in Salmonella isolates and the possible role of plasmids; it also highlights the prevalence of ampicillin resistance in this local population.

Seasonal Variation of Meteor Decay Times Observed at King Sejong Station ($62.22^{\circ}S$, $58.78^{\circ}W$), Antarctica

  • A VHF meteor radar at King Sejong Station ($162.22^{\circ}S$, $58.78^{\circ}W$), Antarctica has been observing meteors during a period of March 2007-July 2009. We analyzed the height profiles of the observed meteor decay times between 70 and 95 km by classifying strong and weak meteors according to their estimated electron line densities. The height profiles of monthly averaged decay times show a peak whose altitude varies with season in the range of 80~85 km: higher peak in southern spring and summer than in fall and winter. The higher peak during summer is consistent with colder temperatures that cause faster chemical reactions of electron removal, as effective recombination rates measured by rocket experiments. The height profiles of 15-min averaged decay times show a clear increasing trend with decreasing altitude from 95 km to the peak altitude, especially for weak meteors. This feature for weak meteors is well explained by ambipolar diffusion of meteor trails, allowing one to estimate atmospheric temperatures and pressures, as in previous studies. However, the strong meteors show not only significant scatters but also different slope of the increasing trend from 95 km to the peak altitude. Therefore, atmospheric temperature estimation from meteor decay times should be applied for weak meteors only. In this study, we present the simple model decay times to explain the height profiles of the observed decay times and discuss the additional removal processes of meteor trail electrons through the empirical recombination and by icy particles.

동매트를 이용한 망간 단괴의 환원 침출 (Reduction leaching of manganese nodule with copper matte)

  • 환원제로서 동매트를 사용하여 희박 염삼 용액에서 망간 단괴 침출 특성을 조사하였다. 동매트는 망간 단괴 침출에 있어서 매우 효과적인 환원제였으며 2.5M 용액으로 용액온도 $70^{\circ}C$에서 2시간 침출하는 경우 금속의 침출율은 각각 Mn 96%, Ni 95%, Co 91%, Cu 88%, Fe 36%였다. Mn, Co 및 Ni의 침출은 동매트의 첨가량에 의존하였으며 고체와 액체의 비율 또한 침출에 큰 영향을 미쳤다. 또한 침출용액의 온도 증가는 각 금속의 침출율을 향상시켰다. 망간 단괴로부터 Mn, Co, Ni 및 Cu의 침출속도는 동매트를 환원제로 사용하는 경우 표면 화학반응과 세공 확산에 의해 지배되었으며 이때의 각 금속의 활성화 에너지를 구한 결과 Mn, Co, Ni, Cu는 17.6, 12.8, 17.2 및 57.9 Kcal/mol이었다.

빅데이터 분석결과와 실증조사 결과의 비교 (Comparing the Results of Big-Data with Questionnaire Survey)

  • 스마트폰 보급의 확산과 데이터 저장 및 분석 기법의 발전은 빅데이터 관련 산업을 미래의 유망 산업으로 탈바꿈하게 만들었다. 마케팅 분야에서는 소셜 데이터를 분석하여 소비자의 니즈를 파악하고, 효과적인 마케팅의 수단으로 활용하고 있다. 빅데이터 분석이 불가능했던 시대에는 소비자를 이해하기 위해서는 소수의 소비자를 대상으로 하는 조사 및 실험에 의존할 수밖에 없었으며, 이러한 전통적인 시장조사 방법은 현재도 활용되고 있다. 빅데이터 분석과 전통적인 조사방법 모두 고객을 이해하는 중요한 방법이기는 하지만, 두 가지 방법을 통해 도출된 결과가 소비자의 트랜드에 대하여 유사한 시사점을 주는지는 확인할 필요가 있다. 이러한 점에서 본 연구에서는 화장품 브랜드를 대상으로 소셜 데이터 분석 결과와 소비자를 대상으로 하는 설문조사의 결과를 비교하고자 하였다. 연구 결과 두 가지 방법 모두 유사한 시사점을 제공하는 것으로 나타났다.

Antifungal Activity of Lactic Acid Bacteria Strains Isolated from Natural Honey against Pathogenic Candida Species

  • The role of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in honey as antifungal activity has received little attention and their mechanism of inhibitory of fungi is not fully understood. In this study, LAB were isolated from honey samples from Malaysia, Libya, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen. Twenty-five isolates were confirmed LAB by catalase test and Gram staining, and were screened for antifungal activity. Four LAB showed inhibitory activity against Candida spp. using the dual agar overlay method. And they were identified as Lactobacillus plantarum HS isolated from Al-Seder honey, Lactobacillus curvatus HH isolated from Al-Hanon honey, Pediococcus acidilactici HC isolated from Tualang honey and Pediococcus pentosaceus HM isolated from Al-Maray honey by the 16S rDNA sequence. The growth of Candida glabrata ATCC 2001 was strongly inhibited (>15.0 mm) and (10~15 mm) by the isolates of L. curvatus HH and P. pentosaceus HM, respectively. The antifungal activity of the crude supernatant (cell free supernatant, CFS) was evaluated using well diffusion method. The CFS showed high antifungal activity against Candida spp. especially The CFS of L. curvatus HH was significantly (p < 0.05) inhibited growth of C. glabrata ATCC 2001, C. parapsilosis ATCC 2201, and C. tropicalis ATCC 750 with inhibitory zone 22.0, 15.6, and 14.7 mm, respectively. While CFS of P. pentosaceus HM was significantly (p < 0.05) effective against C. krusei, C. glabrata, and C. albicans with inhibition zone 17.2, 16.0, and 13.3 mm, respectively. The results indicated that LAB isolated from honey produced compounds which can be used to inhibit the growth of the pathogenic Candida species.
