The shrinkage and the mechanical properties of polypropylene hybrid fiber reinforced mortar PHFRM were investigated in this study. Mortars were prepared with limestone crushing sand, Portland cement and polypropylene hybrid fibers PHF. Two types of virgin fibers, having the same length (30 mm) were used for reinforcing test mortars, fibers in diameter of 0.45 mm, used by PLAST BROS factory of Bordj Bou Arreridj (Algeria) for the fabrication of brooms (for household cleaning) and fibers in diameter of 0.25 mm, available on the market, having multiple applications. In this investigation, it was aimed to study the total and autogenous shrinkage, the flexural and compressive strength of mortars based on hybrid fibers. As a result, PHF have negatively affected the mortar workability. However, shrinkage risk was reduced and coarser fibers (PF45) were most effective for reducing shrinkage risk. The mechanical performances and the ductility of PHFRM were also enhanced.
The determination of in-situ capping materials is one of the most important factors to design in-situ capping in order to protect capping materials from erosion. Previous studies have established relationship between the velocity induced by wave energy and effective diameter of sediments, but they are mostly empirical and numerical researches which is too complicated for field engineers to analyze the erosion of in-situ capping materials. This study provides simple analytical solutions and reliability based on hydraulic model test results. Experimental results show that measured flow velocities with respect to depth induced by wave energy are almost the same as estimated velocities and the erosion resistances of the different effective particle diameters can be estimated.

Experiments have been performed using two-color PIV in hydrogen non-premixed flames with various conditions of coaxial air, which was classified into three cases with/without reaction. Mean velocity, turbulence intensity and Reynolds stress were analyzed using flow fields from PIV measurement First, the similarity of pure jet had a good agreement with previous results of other researchers. It was found that the decay of centerline velocity was proportional to $x^{-1}$ in coaxial air conditions. By normalizing axial distance with effective jet diameter defined by effective density, the data of centerline velocity collapsed a single line. And the radial profiles of mean velocity showed that they didn't become self-similar because the curves differed from each other as coaxial air velocity increased at fixed fuel velocity. Also, turbulence intensity became self-similar further downstream than mean velocity.

Nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) has proved to be an effective tool in applied environmental nanotechnology, where the decreased particle diameter provides a drastic change in the properties and efficiency of nanomaterials used in water purification. However, the agglomeration and colloidal instability represent a problematic and a remarkable reduction in nZVI reactivity. In view of that, this study reports a simple and cost-effective new strategy for ultra-small (< 7.5%) distributed functionalized nZVI-EG (1-9 nm), with high colloidal stability and reduction capacity. These were obtained without inert conditions, using a simple, economical synthesis methodology employing two stabilization mechanisms based on the use of non-aqueous solvent (methanol) and ethylene glycol (EG) as a stabilizer. The information from UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy suggests iron ion coordination by interaction with methanol molecules. Subsequently, after nZVI formation, particle-surface modification occurs by the addition of the EG. Size distribution analysis shows an average diameter of 4.23 nm and the predominance (> 90%) of particles with sizes < 6.10 nm. Evaluation of the stability of functionalized nZVI by sedimentation test and a dynamic light-scattering technique, demonstrated very high colloidal stability. The ultra-small particles displayed a rapid and high nitrate removal capacity from water.

An analysis model for predicting the tip bearing capacity of drilled shafts in cohesionless soils is improved in this study. The evaluation is based on large amounts of drilled shaft load test data. Assessment on the analysis model reveals a greater variation in two coefficients, namely, the overburden bearing capacity factor ($N_q$) and the bearing capacity modifier for soil rigidity (${\zeta}_{qr}$). These factors are modified from the back analysis of drilled shaft load test results. Different effective shaft depths and interpreted capacities at various loading stages (i.e., low, middle, and high) are adopted for the back calculation. Results show that the modified bearing capacity coefficients maintain their basic relationship with soil effective friction angle ($\bar{\phi}$), in which the $N_q$ increases and ${\zeta}_{qr}$ decreases as $\bar{\phi}$ increases. The suggested effective shaft depth is limited to 15B (B = shaft diameter) for the evaluation of effective overburden pressure. Specific design recommendations for the tip bearing capacity analysis of drilled shafts in cohesionless soils are given for engineering practice.

Cylindrical stainless-steel/sodium heat pipe for a high-temperature solar thermal application was manufactured and tested for transient and steady-state operations. Two layers of stainless-steel screen mesh wick was inserted as a capillary structure. The outer diameter of the heat pipe was 12.7 mm and the total length was 250 mm. The effective heat transport length, the thermal load, and the operating temperature were varied as thermal transport conditions of the heat pipe. The thermal load was supplied by an electric furnace up to 1kW and the cooling was performed by forced convection of air The effective thermal conductivity and the thermal resistance were investigated as a function of heat flux, heat transport length, and vapor temperature. Typical range of the total effective thermal conductivity was as low as 43,500 W/m K for heat flux of 176.4 kW/$m^2$ and of operating temperature of 1000 K.

Objective: In this study, we tried to investigate the antimicrobial activity of natural herbaceous plant-derived essential oils against oral disease-causing bacterial strains and establish the scientific evidences to apply them to the dentifrice, mouthwash, and other uses. Methods: We used the disk diffusion method with 23 types of 100% natural essential oils to verify the antimicrobial effect against Streptococcus mutans, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and Lactobacillus rhamnosus. After adhering to the surface of the plate culture medium, $20{\mu}l$ of the essential oil was prepared, and the diameter of the transparent ring was measured after incubation for 24 hours. All the experiments were repeated three times. Results: Among 23 types of oils, 13 were effective against all three strains: myrrh, ginger, basil, carrot seed, tea tree, patchouli, ylang ylang, cypress, lemongrass, cinnamon, peppermint, lavender, and eucalryptus. Seventeen oils were effective against S. mutans, and myrrh, basil, and carrot seed showed high antimicrobial activity. Eighteen oils were effective against P. gingivalis, and tea tree, carrot seed, and cinnamons showed high antimicrobial activity. Sixteen oils were effective against L. rhamnosus, and carrot seed and peppermint cinnamon showed high antimicrobial activity. Conclusion: Consequently, 13 essential oils showed the antimicrobial activity against three bacterial strains, which indicates these essential oils might be used as the effective materials to suppress the growth of oral-disease inducing microorganisms. Moreover, essential oils that have been analyzed activities in this study will be mixed up within the constant range and analyzed their antimicrobial effects to examine the synergistic activity among them.
This study was carried out to provide basic data for active control of the anticipated damage through investigation and analysis of geographical and spatial occurrence distribution of oak wilt disease area. The damage of oak wilt disease was analyzed by investigating all the damage trees caused by oak wilt disease from 2011 to 2015 in three areas of Gwangtan-myeon, Paju-si, Gyeonggi -do. As a result, the closer to the ridge the more damage of the oak wilt was generated. Therefore, it is necessary to select the central management area from 0 to 40 m based on the ridge line for more effective control, and to intensively control the area. Also, it is difficult to predict the occurrence of damage by the slope because the damage situation represent differently by the region. By the diameter class, it was analyzed that the number of damaged trees was the largest in the average diameter class with the most number of the trees in each region.

For the mass production of plug seedlings in cultivar ‘Dejima’ potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) the optimal apical cutting diameter for rooting and rapid multiplication of stem cuttings in hydroponics were determined. In addition, the best planting date was predicted to increase tuber yield of plug seedlings at fall cropping in Cheju-Do, Korea. Days to initial rooting decreased as the cutting diameter was reduced. Plant height, leaf number, root length and root weight per plant were favorable as the cutting diameter was small. The ideal cutting diameter was 1-2 mm in this experiment. In the hydroponic cultures, the Japanese standard (JS) nutrient solution was the most effective for multiplication of stem cuttings. It was able to propagate more than 20 times a month from a single mother plant. Viability of plants, which were derived from plug seedlings using stem cuttings, was excellent when transplanted to the field. The number of tubers and tuber yield in both of the plug seedlings and seed potato planting plots were high when planted on 25 August. The number and yield were reduced when planted on 15 August, 5 September and 15 September. The degree of decrease of tuber yield in the plug seedling planting plot however, was lower than that of seed potatoes when the planting date was late. In the case of small tubers (under 30 g), the number of tubers and tuber yield were evidently increased in the seed potato tuber planting plot; the yield of large tuber (over 80g) in the plug seedling planting plot was higher than that of the seed potato. The total tuber yield per plant in the plug seedling planting plot was less than that of the seed potato; therefore, in order to increase tuber yield it was necessary to increase field plant density.

The present study was performed to determine the ability of canine oocytes to achieve nuclear maturation according to oocyte diameter and different culture environments. All of the collected oocytes were classified by grade 1 to 3 and by their diameters such as $<100{\mu}m,\;<100{\mu}m\;to\;<110{\mu}m,\;<110{\mu}m,\;to\;<120{\mu}m,\;>120{\mu}m,$. Oocytes were cultured in culture medium supplemented with $10\%\;FBS,\;0.4\%\;BSA,\;10\%$ porcine follicular fluid (pFF), $10\%$ canine serum (CS), or $10\%$ canine estrus serum (CES). The mean number of oocytes recovered from estrus status ovaries was significantly higher than that of anestrus status ovaries (p<0.01). The maturation rate of grade 1 oocytes $(>120{\mu}m)$ was significantly higher than that of the other groups (p<0.05). Nuclear maturation to MI to MII in diameter of $>110{\mu}m$ groups was significantly higher than that in $<100{\mu}m$ group (p<0.05). The oocytes cultured in $10\%$ FBSsupplemented group were significantly higher rate of GVBD compared to the other supplemented groups (p<0.05), and oocytes maturation to MI to MII in $10\%$ FBS-, $0.4\%$ BSA-, and $10\%$ pFF-supplemented groups were significantly higher than those in $10\%$ CS-supplemented group (p<0.05). Based on these results, the estrus status and the size of oocyte affect positively to improve nuclear maturation of canine immature oocytes in vitro. Among several protein sources, porcine follicular fluid was the most effective supplementation to culture medium to achieve higher in vitro maturation rate.
