Sculptured surface machining plays a vital role in the process of bring new products to the market place. A great variety of products rely on this technology for the production of the dies and moulds used in manufacturing. And, the use of CNC machines and CAD/CAM system has become a vital parts of product development process. The propose of this study is to investigate the effect of cutting parameters on the machinability such as surface roughness and cusp generated in the machining of sculptured surface on a three-axis CNC machining center using the CAD/CAM system. Experimental result showed that: In step down cutting, as the inclined angle of surface became smaller, the cusp height appeared higher. On the other hand, in step over cutting, as the inclined angle of surface became larger, the cusp height appeared higher. In the point of precision machining, step over cutting was more effective. For the minimization of cusp height, step down cutting was effective in larger inclined surface, but step over cutting in smaller inclined surface.

Talon cusp is cusp-like structure that develops additionally in crown of anterior tooth. And it is one of dental anomalies. Talon cusp can cause various diagnostic, functional, aesthetic problems depending on the size and configuration of cusp. there is a tendency for caries to occur in the developmental grooves, and advanced attrition, periodontal problems, irritation the tongue and temporomandibular pain, occlusal interference and displacement of affected tooth may result. Therefore, early diagnosis and appropriate treatment of each case is important so that it minimize local problems, such as caries, periodontal diseases, and malocclusion. These cases which are in permanent and primary anterior teeth are about gradual reduction forming reparative dentine and complete reduction of talon cusp and root canal therapy which is an alternative and effective form of treatment when gradual reduction of talon cusp may not be possible.
Sculptured surface machining plays a vital role in the process of bring new Products to the market place. A great variety of products rely on this technology for the production of the dies and moulds used in manufacturing. And, the use or CNC machines and CAD/CAM system has become a vital parts or product development process. But, cusp is inevitable by-product in sculptured surface machining, and it is very difficult to calculate the cusp height correctly. In this study, an analytical cusp height model is proposed considering the radius of the ball end mill, radius of machined workpiece and the inclined angle of convex or concave circular surface. Experiments were performed to check the validity of this proposed model and experimental results showed that the proposed cusp model were very effective.

In case that the body with a cusp crack is under uniform heat flow, thermal stress intensity factors are calculated by using boundary element method with linearized body force term. The crack surface is under insulated or fixed temperature condition and the types of crack are symmetric lip and airfoil cusps. Numerical values of thermal stress intensity factors for a Griffith crack and cusp cracks in infinite bodies are proved to be in good agreement within .+-.5% when compared with the previous numerical and exact solutions, respectively. The thermal stress intensity factors for symmetric lip and airfoil cusp cracks in finite bodies are calculated about various effective crack lengths, configuration parameters, and heat flow directions. With the same crack surface thermal boundary conditions, heat flow directions and crack lengths, there are no appreciable differences in variations of thermal stress intensity factors between symmetric lip and airfoil cusp cracks. The signs of thermal stress intensity factors for each cusp crack are changed with each crack surface thermal boundary condition.

In this paper, the inclined endmilling process with a 3-axis machining center using inclined jigs is introduced for the purpose of reducing overall Dies/Molds machining time and improving the machining accuracies. In order to analyze the cutting mechanism of a given endmill more accurately, the unification of the cutting mechanism model of 3-different- kind endmills is carried out by using a nose radius as a parameter. By adding radial runouts as a parameter which influences on surface roughness, the superposition method which defines the effective cusp height superposing the cutter mark height and the conventional cusp height is advanced. And 3-D suface topography predicted in this paper looks like the surface normally observed in practice. Through machining experiments, the adequacy of the superposition method was confirmed.

Recently, finite element analysis technique has been widely used for structural and mechanical understandings of human body in the dentistry field. This research proposed an effective finite element modeling method based on CT images, and parametric studies were performed for the occlusal simulation. The analyses were performed considering linear material behaviors and nonlinear geometrical effect, and validated with the experimental results. In addition, the skull models with two different molar relations such as Class I and full-CUSP Class II were generated and the analyses were performed using the proposed analytical method. As results, the relationships between the mandibular movement and occlusal force of both two models showed similar tendency in human occlusal force. However, stress was evenly distributed from teeth to facial bone in the skull model with Class I, while stress concentration was appeared in the model with full-CUSP Class II due to the changes of occlusal surfaces of the model.

The boundary element method is applied to determine thermal stress intensity factors for a cusp crack in transient state. In the steady temperature field, numerical values of thermal stress intensity factors for a Grifith crack and a symmetric lip cusp crack in a finite body are in good agreement within .+-. 5% with the previous solutions. In transient state, the numerical values of thermal stress intensity factors for the Griffith crack are also in good agreement with the pervious solutions. In both steady and transient states, those for the symmetric lip cusp crack with the crack surface insulated or fixed to the constant temperature are calculates for various effective crack lengths, configuration parameters and uniform heat flow angles. The variations of the thermal boundary conditions of the crack surface have a effect on stress intensity factors. The signs on the values of thermal stress intensity factors can be changed in time variation.

The thermal stress intensity factors for interface cracks of Griffith and symmetric lip cusp types under vertical uniform heat flow in a finite body are calculated by boundary element method. The boundary conditions on the crack surfaces are insulated or fixed to constant temperature. The relationship between the stress intensity factors and the displacements on the nodal point of a crack tip element is derived. The numerical values of the thermal stress intensity factors for interface Griffith crack in an infinite body and for symmetric lip cusp crack in a finite and homogeneous body are compared with the previous solutions. The thermal stress intensity factors for symmetric lip cusp interface crack in a finite body are calculated with respect to various effective crack lengths, configuration parameters, material property ratios and the thermal boundary conditions on the crack surfaces. Under the same outer boundary conditions, there are no appreciable differences in the distribution of thermal stress intensity factors with respect to each material properties. But the effect of crack surface thermal boundary conditions on the thermal stress intensity factors is considerable.

This study deals with the machining of sculptured surfaces on 5-axis CNC milling machine with end mill cutter. The study (I) has the following contents. In 5-axis CNC milling, CL-data consist of CC-data and cutter axis direction vector at the CC-point. Thus, in machining of the sculptured surface on 5-axis CNC milling machine, determination of the direction vector of the milling cutter is very important. The direction vector is obtained by the fact that bottom plane of the milling cutter must not interfere with the free-form surface being machined. The interference is checked by the z-map method which can be applied in all geometric types of the sculptured surfaces. After generating NC part programs from 5-axis post-processing algorithms, sculptured surfaces were machined with 5-axis CNC milling machine (CINCINNATI MILACRON, 20V-80). From these machining tests, it was shown that the machining of the free-form surfaces on 5-axis CNC milling machine with the end mill has smaller cusp heights and shorter cutting time than on 3-axis CNC milling machine with the ball-end mill. Thus, 5-axis CNC end milling was effective machining method for sculptured surfaces. The study (II) deals with the prediction of cusp height and the determination of tool path interval for the 5-axis machining of sculptured surfaces on the basis of study(I).
