  • CFRP has been widely used for strengthening reinforced concrete members in last decade. The strain transfer mechanism from concrete face to CFRP is a key factor for rigidity, ductility, energy dissipation and failure modes of concrete members. For these reasons, determination of the effective CFRP bonding length is the most crucial step to achieve effective and economical strengthening. In this paper, generalizations are made on effective bonding length by increasing the amount of test data. For this purpose, ANSYS software is employed, and an experimentally verified nonlinear finite element model is prepared. Special contact elements are utilized along the concrete-CFRP strip interface for investigating stress distribution, load-displacement behavior, and effective bonding length. Then results are compared with the experimental results. The finite element model found consistent results with the experimental findings.

  • This paper presents a numerical study on the behavior of continuous hollow steel beam strengthened using carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP). Most previous studies on the CFRP strengthening of steel beams have been carried out on the steel beams with simple boundary conditions. No independent study, to the researcher's knowledge, has studied on the CFRP strengthening of square hollow section (SHS) continuous steel beam. However, this study explored the effect of the use of adhesively bonded CFRP flexible sheets on the behavior of the continuous SHS steel beams. Finite Element Method (FEM) has been employed for modeling. Eleven specimens, ten of which were strengthened using CFRP sheets, were analyzed under different coverage length, the number of layers, and the location of CFRP composite. ANSYS software was used to analyze the SHS steel beams. The results showed that the coverage length, the number of layers, and the location of CFRP composite are effective in increasing the ultimate load capacity of the continuous SHS steel beams. Application of CFRP composite also caused the ductility increase some strengthened specimens.

  • Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) is one of the materials used to strengthen steel structures. Most studies on strengthening steel structures have been done on steel beams and steel columns. No independent study, to the researcher's knowledge, has studied the effect of CFRP strengthening on steel beam-columns, and it seems that there is a lack of understanding on behavior of CFRP strengthening on steel beam-columns. However, this study explored the use of adhesively bonded CFRP flexible sheets on retrofitting square hollow section (SHS) steel beam-columns, using numerical investigations. Finite Element Method (FEM) was employed for modeling. To determine the ultimate load of SHS steel beam-columns, ten specimens, eight of which were strengthened with the different coverage length and with one and two CFRP layers, with two types of section (Type A and B) were analyzed. ANSYS was used to analyze the SHS steel beam-columns. The results showed that the CFRP composite had no similar effect on the slender and stocky SHS steel beam-columns. The results also showed that the coverage length, the number of layers, and the location of CFRP composites were effective in increasing the ultimate load of the SHS steel beam-columns.

  • This paper discusses the failure mode of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with composite materials based on six experimental set-ups to determine the FRP-to-concrete bond strength. Interfacial bond behavior between concrete and CFRP plates was discussed. Shear test were performed with different concrete compressive strengths (21 MPa and 28 MPa) and different bonding length (100 mm, 150 mm, 200 mm, and 250 mm). Shear test results indicate that the effective bond length (the bond length beyond which the ultimate load does not increase) was estimated as $196{\sim}204\;mm$ through linear regression analysis. Failure mode of specimens occurred due to debonding between concrete and CFRP plates. Maximum bond stress is calculated as about $3.0{\sim}3.3\;MPa$ from the relationships between bond stress and slip. Finally, the interfacial bond-slip model between CFRP plates and concrete, which is governed debonding failure, has been estimated from shear tests. Average bond stress was about $1.86{\sim}2.04\;MPa$, the volume of slip between CFRP plate and concrete was about $1.45{\sim}1.72\;mm$, and the fracture energy was found to be about $1.35{\sim}1.71\;N/mm$.

  • CFRP strips manufactured in factory are produced normally with smaller width and larger thickness than CFRP sheets. By this reason, bonding force between CFRP strips and concrete substrate is not sufficient to sustain tensile force in CFRP strips. Therefore premature debonding failure cannot be avoided when strengthening is done by simply bonding the CFRP strips. The flexural strength of RC beam strengthened with CFRP strips must be calculated based on the effective strain considering debonding failure. This paper presents test results of an experimental study conducted to evaluate the flexural strength on RC beams strengthened with CFRP strips. 7 specimens were tested with respect to bond length and amount of CFRP strips. From the test results, it was indicated that the strain of the CFRP strips achieved at debonding failure can be decreased less than 6,000$\mu$ depending on the amount of CFRP strips.

  • The behaviour of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with near surface mounted (NSM) CFRP prestressed prisms was experimentally investigated. Five RC beams were tested under four point bending. All beams were made with dimensions of 300 mm in width, 2000 mm in length and 150 in depth. The effects of presstress level of CFRP prestressed prisms and prism material type were studied. The failure mode, load capacity, deflection, CFRP strain, steel strain and ductility of the tested beams were all analyzed. The results showed that the behavior of the reinforced concrete beams strengthened with NSM CFRP prestressed prisms showed a significant increase in the load-carrying capacity and the deformation capacity. The NSM CFRP prestressed prisms strengthening technique could be considered as an effective method for repairing RC structures.

  • Steel structures often require strengthening due to the increasing life loads, or repair caused by corrosion or fatigue cracking. Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) is one of the materials used to strengthen steel structures. Most studies on strengthening steel structures have been carried out on steel beams and steel columns under centric compression load. No independent article, to the author's knowledge, has studied the effect of CFRP strengthening on steel columns under eccentric compression load, and it seems that there is a lack of understanding on behavior of CFRP strengthening on steel columns under eccentric compression load. However, this study explored the use of adhesively bonded CFRP flexible sheets on retrofitting square hollow section (SHS) steel columns under the eccentric compression load, using numerical investigations. Finite Element Method (FEM) was employed for modeling. To determine ultimate load of SHS steel columns, eight specimens with two types of section (Type A and B), strengthened using CFRP sheets, were analyzed under different coverage lengths, the number of layers, and the location of CFRP composites. Two specimens were analyzed without strengthening (control) to determine the increasing rate of the ultimate load in strengthened steel columns. ANSYS was used to analyze the SHS steel columns. The results showed that the CFRP composite had no similar effect on the slender and stocky SHS steel columns. The results also showed that the coverage length, the number of layers, and the location of CFRP composites were effective in increasing the ultimate load of the SHS steel columns.

  • Recently, the external bonding of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets has come to be regarded as a very effective method for strengthening of reinforced concrete structures. The behavior of CFRP-strengthened RC structure is mainly governed by the interfacial behavior, which represents the stress transfer and relative slip between concrete and the CFRP sheet. In this study, the effects of bonded length, width and concrete strength on the interfacial behavior are verified and a bond-slip model is proposed. The proposed bond-slip model has nonlinear ascending regions and exponential descending regions, facilitated by modifying the conventional bilinear bond-slip model. Finite element analysis results of interface element implemented with bond-slip model have shown good agreement with the experimental results performed in this study. It is found that the failure load and strain distribution predicted by finite element analysis with the proposed bond-slip are in good agreement with results of experiments.
