  • Combustion instability is a serious obstacle for the lean premixed combustion of gas turbines, and can even cause fatal damage to the combustor and the entire system. Thus, improved understanding of the mechanisms of combustion instability is necessary for designing and operating gas turbine combustors. In this study, in order to understand the instability phenomena, an experimental study was conducted in a rearwardstep dump combustor with LPG and air. The fluctuations of pressure and heat release were measured by piezoelectric pressure sensor and High speed Intensified Charge Coupled Device (ICCD) camera respectively. Various types of combustion modes occurred in accordance with the equivalence ratio and the fuel supplying conditions. The unmixedness of the fuel and air can be controlled by changing the mixing distance ($L_{fuel}$). It is found that the unmixedness of the fuel and air affects the characteristics of flame behavior and pressure fluctuations in a lean premixed flame.

  • In order to simulate the actual wet-end process in papermachine, RDA, a novel handsheet former, was used and following results were obtained. While the addition of polyelectrolytes gives significant effect on fiber flocculation, increase of stock consistency influenced on the formation of RDA sheets greatly. In particular, the consistency increase from 0.3 % to 0.4% abruptly increased floe size of RDA sheet and it results in severe deterioration of paper strength. Stock consistency, therefore, should be regarded as the most important factor in the formation simulation with RDA and should be controlled as the first sequence of tuning the operating conditions of RDA to simulate correctly the target machine paper's formation.

  • This paper presents a brief outline of dynamic stability of damaged ship in rough, beam wind and waves. The one degree-of-freedom, linear roll equation is adopted with the effects of damage fluid and external forces, but without the effect of sloshing. We evaluate the dynamic stability in terms of capizing probability based on energy balance mechanics and risk analysis , the method of which was proposed by Umeda [2] to the high speed crafts. As a result, we can predict the dynamic stability quantitatively according to sea state , operating and damage conditions.

  • To survive in outdoor environments, photovoltaic modules rely on packaging materials to provide requisite durability. We analyzed the properties of encapsulant materials that are important for photovoltaic module packaging. The properties of Ethylene Vinyl Acetate(EVA) sheet in photovoltaic encapsulant materials have to meet conditions that are high optical transmittance, good adhesion and high cross-linking rate. The objective of this paper is to understand the property evaluation methods of EVA sheet. Through this research, we could confirm that properties of EVA sheet have an effect on durability and operating efficiency of photovoltaic module.

  • The operation characteristics of variable conductance heat pipe(VCHP) were numerically investigated by using 1-dimensional diffuse-front model. For different boundary conditions, the amount of non-condensible gas charge and dimension of gas reservoir were obtained by iterative calculation. It is found that the amount of non-condensible gas charge and dimensions of gas reservoir have an effect on the temperature control of condenser for the given operating condition of VCHP. The numerical results show that VCHP has an excellent capability of temperature control when subjected to a change in the heat input.

  • In this paper, a simulation program of relaying system including the CT and CPD ( capacitive potential device ) is developed to study the effect of its operation under various system conditions. To deal with the dynamic characteristics of relaying system, state space technique is applied, and then the state equations of CT, CPD and mho distance relay are constructed. Also the dynamic response characteristics of overall relaying system is verified by digital simulation. Since the proposed model is capable of taking arbitrary input waveforms from EMTP in analyzing its dynamic responses, the effects of CT-saturation and CPD-subsidence transient characteristics on the operating points of who distance relay can be accurately prodicted. It gives more effective results, compared with the model without considering those characteristics by checking the exprimental data.

  • Increase of consumption in limited coal reserves leads prices surging. As a result, iron works which produce products with coal are in difficulties. Accordingly, it is required a lot of research of using non-caking coal that is relatively low cost and has abundant reserves. Direct drying and indirect drying are two major methods of drying the coal. Recently, to minimize the needed calories and to save energy, using fluidbed or fluidizing method is a recent main trend of minimizing the size of the facility and maximizing energy efficiency. However there is also disadvantage such as increasing facility investment because of installing additional facilities in the latter part. In this study, we will have theoretical researches on the indirect drying method with heat exchange system which have been traditionally used. As a result it is expected to increase the efficiency of the facility operation.

  • The limitation of flow control for a bistable fluidic valve has been investigated. The physical model of the fluidic valve includes two main flow outlets and two control flow inlets. The experiments were conducted with pressure regulators, mass flow meters, and piezo sensors to analyze flow switching characteristics of the fluidic valve. The experimental data such as pressure and mass flow rate of control flows and the switching time of the main flow was obtained with various operating conditions. The operation limit of the fluidic valve is identified, and a model equation for pre-estimating the minimum control pressure to switch the direction of the main flow has been proposed.

  • Recently, regulation of ventilator installation and its details has been revised and the establishment of heat recovery ventilator in newly built apartments has been obligated. This study was done to offer the method of operation and design of heat recovery ventilator to save energy by measuring its efficiency and comparing with the results of experiment. This paper confirmed that it is desirable to operate heat recovery ventilator by using "by-pass mode" within $60{\sim}80%$ scope of the difference indoor absolute humidity in spring and autumn and outdoor absolute humidity and heat recovery ventilator of energy saving effect is better than constant air volume system.

  • The catalyst layer of a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell is a mixture of polymer, carbon, and platinum. The characteristics of the catalyst layer play critical role in determining the performance of the PEM fuel cell. This research investigates the role of catalyst layer composition using a Central Composite Design (CCD) experiment with two factors which are Nafion content and carbon loading while the platinum catalyst surface area is held constant. For each catalyst layer composition, polarization curves are measured to evaluate cell performance at common operating conditions, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), and Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) are then applied to investigate the cause of the observed variations in performance. The results show that both Nafion and carbon content significantly affect MEA performance. The ohmic resistance and active catalyst area of the cell do not correlate with catalyst layer composition, and observed variations in the cell resistance and active catalyst area produced changes in performance that were not significant relative to compositions of catalyst layers.
