The aim of this study was to investigate the prevention effect of oral disease on the school-based toothbrushing program(SBTBP) in Daejeon in 30 months. The experimental subjects were the 5th grade's 70 students who have gone to school with the school-based toothbrushing program since the 3th-grade. The control school was located in close geographical area with similar economical status. The questionnaire about oral health knowledge and behavior was done by self-recording. After one dentist examined the dental caries and periodontal status, the gingival crevicular fluid(GCF) was collected with #25 paperpoint for 1 miniutes. Matrix Metalloproteinase(MMP)-9 in GCF was analyzed by ELISA. The SBTBP group had the upper oral health knowledge than the control significantly(p<0.001), but, the SBTBP group had no difference of the oral health behavior from the control. Although the SBTBP group had the lower plaque index than the control significantly(p=0.02), the SBTBP group had no difference of the gingival index, calculus index and the concentration of MMP-9 in GCF from the control. In conclusion, The SBTBP had the effect to reduce the dental plaque and to improve the oral health knowledge. On the other hand, the effect to prevent dental caries and periodontal disease of SBTBP was not clear.
This study examined the relationship between the quantity of Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus spp. related to dental caries and the degree of acidity in saliva. A total of 240 saliva samples were taken from 80 subjects at the faculty of dentistry in Skopje, Macedonia. The saliva samples were taken by stimulating saliva production stimulation with paraffin chewing. However, no stimulation was applied when obtaining the samples used for measuring the pH. The data showed that in the caries group, S. mutans in 1 ml of saliva formed colonies with confluent growth (CFU > $10^6$ and $10^4-10^5$) in 100% of samples, whereas the Lactobacillus spp. formed colonies with confluent growth in 78.3%. In contrast, no colonies with confluent growth (CFU > $10^6$ and $10^5$) were found in the control group (with healthy intact teeth). In the caries group, the pH of the saliva was slightly acidic (pH = 5.90 - 6.50) and the buffering capacity was very low (below 0.7 ml of saliva per min). On the other hand, the pH of the saliva in the control group was neutral (pH 7.01 - 7.7) and the buffering capacity was high (over 1 ml of saliva per min). The increased number of S. mutans and Lactobacillus spp. in 1 ml of saliva (above $10^5$ CFU or more) from the CRT (Caries Risk Test, Vivadent, Liechtenstein) bacteria test can indicate an increased caries risk as well as slightly higher acidity of the saliva. Overall, these results reveal that the caries risk can be predicted by simply measuring the pH and buffering capacity of saliva, and can be used to monitor the effect of dental hygiene practices with the aim of preventing dental caries.

This study assessed microbiological hazards at postharvest stage of dropwort farms (A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I) located in 4 different areas in Korea. The samples were assessed for sanitary indication bacteria (total aerobic bacteria, coliform, and Escherichia coli) and pathogenic bacteria (Escherichia coli O157:H7, Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus). Total aerobic bacteria and coliform in 9 dropwort farms were detected at the levels of 0~7.00 and 0~4.25 log CFU/g, mL, of $100cm^2$. In particular, microbial contamination in worker's hand showed higher than cultivation environment factors. Escherichia coli was detected in several farms of soil, irrigation water, washing water and worker's hand and also, dropwort in these farms was contaminated with E. coli (positive reaction). In case of pathogenic bacteria, B. cereus was detected at the highest levels in soil. S. aureus was detected qualitatively from only one sample of dropwort washed by water. E. coli O157:H7 and L. monocytogenes were not detected. Although dropwort pass through 2 process (trimming and washing), the microbial contamination was not differ significantly before and after which indicates that current washing system was not effect on reduction of microorganism. From these results, the postharvest environment and workers have been considered as cross-contamination factors. Thus, processing equipments and personal hygiene should be managed to reduce the microbial contamination of dropwort. To educate the technique performing oral health care by oneself, four times individualized oral instruction was introduced to patients and control marks of plaque on sex, age, occupation, monthly average income, academic career were measured respectively. Through analysis of it's results and evaluation of oral health care grade on patients, this study arranged for basic data about individualized oral instruction to improve public oral health. 1. As individualized oral instruction was processed, control mark of dentalplaque improved greatly. 2. Control mark of dentalplaque on sex, female's control mark was higher than male's it. But, a gap of control mark was small. 3. Control mark of dentalplaque on age, control mark of patients in their 50s to 59s and 30s to 39s was higher than average of the whole. 4. Control mark of dentalplaque on occupation, control mark of inoccupation and professional was highly appeared. 5. Control mark of dentalplaque on monthly average income, control mark of patients whose monthly average income was below 2.5 million was highly appeared. 6. Control mark of dentalplaque on academic career, control mark of patients who graduated of university was highly appeared at first and second evaluation. On the other hand, control mark of patients who graduated of college or dropped out of university was highly appeared at third and fourth evaluation. According to the above statements, to effectively take care of oral health, our felt keenly the necessity of the individualized repeated instruction.
Risk ranking must be determined for various hazards/food combinations to conduct microbial risk management effectively. Risk Ranger is a simple, easy-to-use calculation tool developed in Microsoft Excel and designed to rank the risk (low, medium, and high) for semi-quantitative microbial risk assessment. The user is required to answer 11 questions in Risk Ranger related to 1) severity of the hazard, 2) likelihood of a disease-causing dose of the hazard being present in the meal, and 3) the probability of exposure to the hazard in a defined time. This study determined the risk ranking for twenty three combinations of foodborne pathogens/potentially hazardous foods (PHFs) using a Risk Ranger. In this study, pathogenic E. coli in fresh cut produce salad was scored as 79, which was the highest rank among the 23 combinations of the foodborne pathogens and PHFs. On the other hand, zero risk was obtained with V parahaemolyticus in sushi, Salmonella in meat products and E. coli O157:H7 in hamburger patties. Although Risk Ranger is very simple method to rate the risk of foodborne pathogens and PHFs combination, the accuracy of result was mainly affected by the availability and accuracy of data in the literature. According to the result of literature review, the data are needed for contamination rate of raw materials, consumption amount/frequency of PHFs, and the effect of processing on pathogen. Risk ranking must be continuously revalidated with new data.

Objectives: Direct reading instruments (DRIs) are widely used by industrial hygienists and other experts for preliminary survey and identifying source locations in many industrial fields. Photoionization detectors (PIDs), which are a form of hand-held portable DRIs, have been used for a variety of airborne vaporized chemicals, especially evaporated hydrocarbon solvents. The benefits of PIDs are high sensitivity between each chemical, competitive price, and portability. With the goal of increasing the accuracy of logged PID concentrations, previous studies have performed tests for the assessment of single chemical compounds, not mixtures. The purpose of this preliminary study was to measure mixtures with a PID and charcoal tube at the same time and compare the accuracy between them. Methods: A chamber test was implemented with different mixtures of hydrocarbon chemicals (acetone, isopropyl alcohol, toluene, m-xylene) and levels in the range of 14 to 864 ppm. Three PIDs and charcoal tubes were connected to the chamber and measured the chemical mixtures simultaneously. A comparison of accuracy and the PID group of concentrations with manufacture correction factor (M_CF) and field correction factor (F_CF) applied was performed. Results: The accuracy of the PID concentrations data-logged from the PID did not meet the accuracy criteria except for the mixture level B and C logged from PID No. 2, which was 18% of all tests for meeting accuracy criteria. The mean and standard deviation (SD) of concentration (ppm) of the charcoal tube followed by each mixtures' level were 10.37±0.26, 155.33±5.28, 300.80±11.65, and 774.93±22.65, respectively. When applying F_CF into the PID concentrations, the accuracy increased by nearly 82%. However, in the case of M_CF, none met the accuracy criterion. Between the PID there were differences of logged concentrations. Conclusions: In this preliminary study, the concentration of a logged PID with F_CF applied was a better way to increase accuracy compared to applying M_CF. We suggest that additional research is necessary to consider environmental factors such as temperature and humidity.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to evaluate the generating characteristics of VOCs and the exposure effect to chemicals among laundry workers and to identify the current status of occupational safety and health through health check-ups. Methods: During the six-month period from April to September 2015, this study quantitatively measured seven VOCs in ten laundries and carried out health examinations on 35 workers. Results: Comparing the monitoring results for the ten laundries, they were classified into three groups by ventilation system, dry-cleaning and size of shop. The average concentration of toluene, chlorobenzene, xylene, ethylbenzene, benzene, styrene and TCE were 23.9, 15.6, 5.5, 2.8, 0.9, 0.3 and $1.3{\mu}g/m^3$, respectively. During dry-cleaning, VOC concentrations were 1.3-8.9 times higher than usual. On the other hand, at night the concentrations of toluene, chlorobenzene, xylene, ethylbenzene, benzene, styrene and TCE were 64.3, 41.5, 12.2, 6.3, 1.1, 1.2 and $6.6{\mu}g/m^3$, respectively. The health checkup results for the 35 workers showed that 13 workers were diagnosed as normal, while 22 workers were diagnosed as requiring continuous monitoring or re-checkup of liver and hematogenous functions. Conclusions: Although the results of exposure evaluation to VOCs did not exceed reference value and items had a low correlation with health checkup items, it is necessary to improve indoor air quality due to VOC volatilization from clothes.
The study was focused to investigate the effect of nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) formation due to nitrosamine (NA) precursor and/or inhibitor addition to Kimchi during the fermentation of Kimchi at room temperature ($16{\pm}2^{\circ}C$). The addition of nitrite and dimethylamine (DMA) to Kimchi showed the average 32-fold ($21.3{\sim}113.9\;\mu\textrm{g}/kg$) and 9-fold ($1.3{\sim}40.3\;\mu\textrm{g}/kg$) higher NDMA formation than control ($O{\sim}5.6\;\mu\textrm{g}/kg$), respectively. Also, the addition of both nitrite and DMA resulted in the increase of NDMA formation to average 42-fold ($39.4{\sim}155.7\;\mu\textrm{g}/kg$) higher than control. On the other hand, the addition of 4 ruM ascorbic acid to Kimchi with nitrite and DMA inhibited the formation of NDMA down to 71.3% of control. However, the addition of cysteine and erythorbic acid affected no inhibition to NDMA formation during the test. The addition of sodium sulfite increased NDMA formation. Accordingly, this showed that the amount of ascorbic acid generated during Kimchi fermentation played an important inhibition role for NA formation.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the tooth brightening of whitening dentifrice and to determine the tooth stain level over 20 days depending on beverages that have various pH values after using whitening dentifrice. Thirty teeth were randomly divided into two groups. Group 1 was provided with a whitening dentifrice for 3 minutes and group 2 was treated with a control dentifrice for 3 minutes thrice a day for four weeks. All teeth were photographed using a digital imaging system under a stereomicroscope (magnification, ${\times}10$). After four weeks, the ten teeth were immersed in the tea solution, another of ten teeth were immersed in the orange juice and the other of the teeth were immersed in the coffee solution. Three solutions were renewed each day for the appropriate groups. Stain development was monitored under a stereomicroscope daily over 20 days period by immersion of teeth in a tea, juice, coffee solution at room temperature ($25^{\circ}C$) in individual container. Whitening dentifrice gave a statistically higher value of overall color change as compared to control dentifrice after 21 days (p<0.05). Stain level of whiten tooth immersed in orange juice was the grestest overall color change, but there was not statistically significant difference (p>0.05). On the other hand, stain level of whiten tooth immersed in coffee and green tea showed a statistically significant difference after 15 days and 5 days, respectively (p<0.05). Tooth immersed in green tea was higher negative value than control dentifrice. The tooth using whitening dentifrice was shown to be effectively whiter color than control dentifrice. However, stain level by orange juice, coffee and green tea has a strong staining effect.

Background: This study purposed to examine how the incidence of the central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) in a operating room (OR) is affected by bundle application on central line insertion (CLI) practice. Methods: The study design was a pretest-posttest experimental trial. The subjects were 83 patients before the bundle application on CLI and 70 patients after. Results: The compliance(%) of bundle on CLI of among those who observed all of the five items increased from 7.2% before the intervention to 72.9% after. By items, compliance with the maximal barrier precaution was 100% for the use of a mask and cap before and after the intervention, but increased from 73.5% before the intervention to 88.6% after for the hand hygiene, from 73.5% to 88.6% for the use of a sterile gown, and from 9.6% to 75.7% for the use of a sterile large drape covering the whole body. CLABSI did not happen on CLI either before or after the application of the bundle intervention. Conclusion: Bundle application increased compliance with the use of a sterile gown and the use of a sterile large drape. However, its effect in the prevention of CLABSI was not clear probably due to the short period of intervention in a single hospital.
