We investigate the effect of the modification of cellulose acetate propionate as an organic vehicle for silver paste on solar cell efficiency. For the modification of cellulose acetate propionate, poly(ethylene glycol) is introduced to the hydroxyl groups of a cellulose acetate propionate backbone via esterification reaction. The chemical structure and composition of poly(ethylene glycol) functionalized cellulose acetate propionate is characterized by Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared, $^1H$ nuclear magnetic resonance, differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. Due to the effect of structural change for poly(ethylene glycol) functionalized cellulose acetate propionate on the viscosity of silver paste, the solar cell efficiency increases from 18.524 % to 18.652 %. In addition, when ethylene carbonate, which has a structure similar to poly(ethylene glycol), is introduced to cellulose acetate propionate via ring opening polymerization, we find that the efficiency of the solar cell increases from 18.524 % to 18.622 %.
In order to investigate the critical amino acid residues involved in the catalytic activities of $\beta$-cyclodextrin glucanotransferase ($\beta$-CGTase) excreted by Bacillus firmus var. alkalophilus, the amino acid residues in $\beta$-CGTase were modified by various site-specific amino acid modifying reagents. The cyclizing and amylolytic activities of $\beta$-CGTase were all seriously reduced after treatment with Woodward's reagent K (WRK) modifying aspartic/glutamic acid, N-bromosuccinimde (NBS) modifying tryptophan, and diethylpyrocarbonate (DEPC) modifying histidine residues. The roles of tryptophan and histidine residues in $\beta$-CGTase were further investigated by measuring the protection effect of various substrates during chemical modification, comparing protein mobility in native and affinity polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis containing soluble starch, and comparing the $K_m$ and $V_{max}$ values of native and modified enzymes. Tryptophan residues were identified as affecting substrate-binding ability rather than influencing catalytic activities. On the other hand, histidine residues influenced catalytic ability rather than substrate-binding ability, plus histidine modification had an effect on shifting the optimum pH and pH stability.
Structural modification in the electrical cabinet is investigated by a proposed procedure that comprises of an experimental, analytical and numerical solution. This research emphasizes the linear dynamic analysis of the cabinet that is studied under the seismic excitation to demonstrate the real behavior of the cabinets in NPP. To this end, an actual electric cabinet is experimentally tested using an impact hammer test which reveals the fundamental parameters of the cabinet. The Frequency-domain decomposition (FDD) method is used to extract the dynamic properties of the cabinet from the experiment which is then used for numerical modeling. To validate the dynamic properties of the cabinet an analytical solution is suggested. The calibrated model is analyzed under the floor response obtained from the Connecticut nuclear power plant structure excited by Tabas 1978 (Mw 7.4) earthquake. Eventually, the grouping effect of the cabinets is proposed which represents the influence on the dynamic modification. This grouping of the cabinets is described more sophisticatedly by the theoretical understating, which results in a significant change in the seismic response. Considering the grouping effects will be helpful in the assessment of the real seismic behavior, design, and performance of cabinets.
In order to give pulp surfaces anti-bacterial functionality and photo-catalytic deodorant ability, functional pulps was made using a surface modification method with Ag nano-colloidal solution and $TiO_2$ filler. Hygiene paper was made with the specially modified pulp, and anti-bacterial and deodorant tests were carried out. The Ag nano-colloidal solution was coated on the surface of the pulp using the high pressurized gas phase squirt through the spray nozzle mounted on the hybridization system. The surface modified functional pulp was hybridized with the optimum ratio of $TiO_2$(fine particle) to pulp(core particle) under the condition of $6,000{\sim}10,000$ rpm for $3{\sim}7$ minutes in the system. The anti-bacterial functionality of the hygiene paper was confirmed by the halo test in which the formation of the clear zone around the hygiene paper sample was observed. The inhibition growth test using MIC bioscreen C showed the inhibition growth effect of the bacteria as the reaction time was increased. The photo-catalytic effect measurement of the $TiO_2$ for 4 hours of the reaction showed $50{\sim}60%$ of decomposition rate, reaching over 60% for 5 hours of the reaction.
Since there are three hydroxyl groups on each anhydroglucose ring of the cellulose, the renewable resources, we can get various functional papers by the chemical modification of cellulose. The reaction involving the introduction of the ${\beta}$-cyanoethyl ($-CH_2-CH_2$-CN) group into organic substances containing reactive hydrogen atoms is known as cyanoethylation. Cellulose reacts with acrylonitrile in the presence of strong alkalis in a typical manner of primary and secondary alcohols to form cyanoethyl ethers. In cyanoethylation, important factors of reaction are temperature, concentration of the NaOH, and addition rate of acrylronitrile. FT-IR spectra of cyanoethyl group was confirmed at $2250cm^{-1}$, which corresponds the introduction of aliphatic nitrile group. Effect of cyanoethyl DS(degree of substitution) on strength properties was resulted that cyanoethylated BKP of DS 0.04 appeared to be the best choice for overall strength properties. Also, excellent thermal stability in aging characteristics was obtained.
Skewed bridges, being irregular structures with complicated dynamic behavior, are more susceptible to earthquake damage. Reliable seismic-resistant design of skewed bridges can be achieved by accurate determination of nonlinear seismic demands. However, the effect of geometric characteristics on the response modification factor (R-factor) is not accounted for in bridge design practices. This study attempts to investigate the effects of changes in the number of spans, skew angle and bearing stiffness on R-factor values and to assess the seismic fragility of skewed bridges. Results indicated that changes in the skew angle had no significant effect on R-factor values which were in consonance with code-prescribed R values. Also, unlike the increase in the number of spans that resulted in a decrease in the R-factor, the increase in bearing stiffness led to higher R-factor values. Findings of the fragility analysis implied that although the increase in the number of spans, as well as the increase in the skew angle, led to a higher failure probability, greater values of bearing stiffness reduced the collapse probability. For practicing design engineers, it is recommended that maximum demands on substructure elements to be calculated when the excitation angle is applied along the principal axes of skewed bridges.
Oxidation of catecholamines may contribute to the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD). The effect of the oxidized products of catecholamines on the modification of Cu,Zn-superoxide dismutase (SOD) was investigated. When Cu,Zn-SOD was incubated with the oxidized 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA) or dopamine, the protein was induced to be aggregated. The deoxyribose assay showed that hydroxyl radicals were generated during the oxidation of catecholamines in the presence of copper ion. Radical scavengers, azide, N-acetylcysteine, and catalase inhibited the oxidized catecholamine-mediated Cu,Zn-SOD aggregation. Therefore, the results indicate that free radicals may play a role in the aggregation of Cu,Zn-SOD. When Cu,Zn-SOD that had been exposed to catecholamines was subsequently analyzed by an amino acid analysis, the glycine and histidine residues were particularly sensitive. These results suggest that the modification of Cu,Zn-SOD by oxidized catecholamines might induce the perturbation of cellular antioxidant systems and led to a deleterious cell condition.
In this work, ordered mesoporous carbons (OMCs) were prepared by the conventional templating method using mesoporous silica (SBA-15) for Pt-Ru catalyst supports in fuel cells. The influence of surface modification on carbon supports on the electrochemical activities of Pt-Ru/OMCs was investigated with different pH. The neutral-treated OMCs (N-OMCs), base-treated OMCs (B-OMCs), and acid-treated OMCs (A-OMCs) were prepared by treating OMCs with 2 M $C_6H_6$, 2 M KOH, and 2 M $H_3PO_4$, respectively. The surface characteristic of the carbon supports were determined X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The electrochemical activities of the Pt-Ru catalysts had been enhanced when the OMCs supports were treated by basic or neutral agents, while the electrochemical activities had been decayed for the A-OMCs supported Pt-Ru.
The nature and the sources of sound in cars is discussed in the light of many previous works, and the importance of the system resonances inside cars is suggested. An investigation of a 'boom' problem in a small size passenger car is described. It was established that the 'boom' frequencies coincided with engine firing frequency and also with several system resonances. To find out main transmission path of the noise to the car interior, various possible sources were eliminated from the investigation by means of simple modification to the vehicle. Data on the structural modes of the body, and the acoustic modes of the passenger compartment at various forcing cases were obtained to provide better understanding of the problem. It was found that the acoustic resonance responsible for the boom was controlled largely the bending motion of the floor. To investigate the effect of the structural modification to the acoustic response, center floor of the car was reinforced. a great reduction of the noise inside the car especially at the offending speed range, was achieved by this modification.

Surface modification of the gate dielectric has a strong influence on the performance of printed transistors. The surface modification occurs between the gate dielectric and semiconductor. The printed transistor with evaporated vanadium pentoxide ($V_2O_5$) modification exhibits a mobility of $0.2cm^2\;V^{-1}\;s{-1}$ and a subthreshold slope of 1.47 V/decade.
