Craving Jobs? Revisiting Labor and Educational Migration from Uzbekistan to Japan and South Korea

  • This paper focuses on the emerging patterns of educational mobility and unskilled labor migration from Uzbekistan to Japan and South Korea. Labor migration and educational mobility are becoming the next "horizon" in the expanded relationship between East and Central Asia, powered by several factors, including the efforts by Japan and South Korea to build "original" people-oriented policy engagements with the region and the demand from Central Asian states, such as Uzbekistan, to provide more labor opportunities to their young and growing populations. This paper presents the initial findings of a pilot survey that explores and occasionally compares the experiences of Uzbek migrants to Japan and South Korea, using datasets of face-to-face interviews related to various aspects of life in Japan and South Korea. The interviews were conducted face to face and online (Telegram, Skype, etc.) with 66 migrants and Japanese language school students (whom this paper treats as labor migrants masquerading as students) in Japan from November 2019 to January 2020 as well as online with 30 laborers and students in South Korea from August to September 2020.

Roles of RasW in Cell Morphology, Migration, and Development in Dictyostelium

  • In Dictyostelium , there are 15 Ras subfamilies, including 11 Ras, 3 Rap, 1 Rheb. The Ras proteins are involved in regulating various cell processes as switch proteins. The functions of many Ras proteins have been identified, but some of Ras proteins have not yet been identified. Here, we focused on identifying the roles of RasW among them. To investigate the functions of RasW in cell morphology, cell migration, and development in Dictyostelium , we compared the phenotypes of wild-type cells and rasW null cells. rasW null cells showed a larger, more spread-out morphology and reduced cell motility compared to wild-type cells. There was no significant difference between wild-type cells and rasW null cells during multicellular developmental process. These results suggest that RasW is involved in regulating cell morphology and cell migration in Dictyostelium.

The Educational Needs Analysis on Migration to Mountains Area by City Dwellers (도시민 대상 귀산촌 교육 요구도 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the educational needs targeted at city dwellers with hope of migration to mountain areas. 80 city dwellers participating in the education program operated by Korea Forestry Promotion Institute were selected. Results showed that city dwellers had higher preference for the education including medium scale(20-40 persons)and the type of camp with field experience. Real experiences and knowledge and understanding of migration to rural area are the most important element of the qualifications of the program teachers. In the contents of education, city dwellers wanted the teaching programs about 'how to have forest land', 'how to produce the forest products', 'field experience' and 'forest tourism' and so on. In other words, city dwellers who wanted to move to mountain areas were interested in basic things for living. In addition, it will need to investigate people who have real experiences migrating to mountain areas and then it is necessary to discuss educational needs and supporting system helping people can settle in mountain areas.

Effect of a PI3K inhibitor LY294002 on cell migration (세포 이동에서 PI3K 억제제인 LY294002의 효과)

  • Cell migration is essential for diverse cellular processes including wound healing, immune response, development, and cancer metastasis. Pi3-kinase (PI3K) is a key regulator for actin cytoskeleton and phosphorylates phosphatidylinositol (4,5)-diphosphate (PIP2) to phosphatidylinositol (3,4,5)-trisphosphate (PIP3). High levels of PIP3 by PI3Ks are associated with increased levels of F-actin and pseudopod extension at the leading edge of migrating cells such as neutrophils and Dictyostelium. LY294002 is a well-known PI3K specific inhibitor. Here, we investigated the effect of LY294002 on cell migration. First, we evaluated the appropriate concentration of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) for using as a solvent for LY294002. DMSO is a highly polar organic reagent and one of the most common solvent for organic and inorganic chemicals. Cell morphology and cell migration were unaffected at the concentrations less than 0.1 % DMSO. Therefore, stock solution of LY294002 was prepared so that the final concentration of DMSO was 0.1 % or less when treated. When cells were treated with LY294002, cell migration was increased in a concentration-dependent manner. The maximum speed was detected in the presence of 30 µM LY294002. These results suggest that PI3Ks play a inhibitory role in regulating cell migration in our experimental conditions.

Factors Influencing Intention of Migration by Hospital Nurses in Korea (병원간호사의 해외취업 의향에 영향을 미치는 요인)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the factors influencing intention of migration by Korean hospital nurses. Methods: Using cross sectional correlational design, data were collected from 512 nurses working in 7 hospitals ranging in size from 300 to 900 beds in D city and K province of Korea. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, chi-square, and multiple hierarchical regression using the SPSS program. Results: There were significant differences in intention of migration by age, educational background, marital status, work experience, and yearly incomes. Although there was high intention of migration of the subjects, the level of preparation for migration was relatively low. The variables that were independently associated with intention of migration were graduates of RN-BSN program, personal factors of subjects, and environmental factors. Those who had lower perception on nursing images and work condition had significantly higher intention of migration than those who had higher perception. Full model accounted for 37.3% of the variance in intention of migration. Conclusion: To prevent brain drain of competent nurses in Korea, appropriate strategies to enhance work condition should be developed and the effect of migration of nurses should be investigated in further studies.

The Pattern of Regional Migration in Myanmar (미얀마 인구이동 패턴과 결정요인 분석)

  • This study analyzes the determinants and patterns of regional migration in Myanmar. Population migration is affected by various factors such as economic and social factors as well as regional characteristics. It is affected by factors such as income, employment and social overhead capital. Therefore, this study attempts to analyze the following two research problems. First, I would like to analyze whether the reform and opening of Myanmar is causing the migration of rural to urban population. Myanmar is also trying to verify the pattern of population migration experienced by other developing countries. Second, we analyze the impact of social overhead capital on population migration in Myanmar. We analyze the impact of basic infrastructure such as roads, electricity and water on population movements. This will give implications for investment policy decision of social overhead capital for balanced regional development. First, the pattern of population migration in Myanmar is shifting from rural to urban areas, as other developing countries have experienced. Myanmar's urban areas of Yangon and Mandalay have been analyzed as having migration. Second, the expansion of social overhead capital was found to have an impact. Social overhead capital such as roads and educational environments were analyzed to have the capacity to inhale the population. Especially, the educational environment of the region has a great effect on population migration. It is analyzed that education reform is an important policy issue for the balanced regional development of Myanmar. Fourth, employment opportunities were analyzed to have the greatest impact on Myanmar population movements. In the early stage of economic development, it is analyzed that the population moves to a region where employment opportunity is high in the situation where foreign capital is coming in. It is analyzed that the direction of inflow of foreign capital and the imbalance of development in the region will be determined in the situation where the economic development is carried out through foreign capital.

Simulation of nanosilver migration from polystyrene nanocomposite into food simulants

  • Polystyrene granules were combined with nanosilver to form a nanocomposite film. One-side migration was conducted to test into three food simulants (3% acetic acid, 10% ethanol and 95% ethanol) at $40^{\circ}C$ temperature on different period of time (2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 days). It was found that, among the simulants, the highest migration amount was obtained with 3% acetic acid, while the 95% ethanol revealed the least migration level. Diffusion coefficients of nanosilver particles into simulants were estimated by inverse simulation using experimental data of concentration variation in the simulants. The finite element method used to solve the mass transfer equation and the numerical results indicates the sameresponse with the experimental data. The numerical results confirmed that the highest diffusion coefficient for acetic acid 3% (1.82E-10 to $1.76E-9m^2\;s^{-1}$) and the lowest diffusion coefficient for ethanol 95% from 2 to 10 days were obtained, respectively. Also, results of diffusion coefficient - concentration relation showed, the diffusion coefficient had in direct correlation with time and concentration. The results indicated that, in the 3% acetic acid, due to the increasing of diffusion coefficient of silver nanoparticles, they are released faster and distributed uniformly.

The Vicious Cycle of Regional Exodus: Examining the Economic Environment of Birthplace and the Out-migration of Young Individuals (지역이탈의 악순환: 출생지의 경제 환경과 청년 취업자의 지역이탈)

  • Regional migration is a problem faced by all non-metropolitan areas in Korea, but the extent of migration varies depending on regional economic conditions. This study examines how the extent of youth migration varies depending on the economic conditions of their birthplaces. The results showed that youth migration was more severe in areas suffering from population decline and aging problems. The smaller the economy and the weaker the financial independence of the region, the more severe the youth migration. In particular, commercial, educational, and cultural facilities, except for medical facilities, were not able to curb youth migration. In addition, there was a significant wage gap between those employed in the metropolitan area and those employed in the regions, regardless of their origin. This suggests that non-metropolitan areas are caught in a vicious cycle of regional economic deterioration and youth migration.

  • To grasp the migration characteristics in the Busan Metropolitan Area (BMA), this study analyzed household characteristics and migration selectivity. The major findings of the study are as follows: first, young (especially 25 to 34 years of age) and single person households have greater propensity to migrate out from BMA, and their home ownership rate is low. These trends are much stronger in households that migrate out towards the Seoul Metropolitan Area from Busan. Second, age and educational selectivity of migration is evident. The characteristics of movers are quite different from those of stayers at Busan. Young people are more likely to migrate out of Busan, and higher levels of education are deeply associated with higher mobility. Through analyzing four high schools in Busan, it is acknowledged that most honor students entered 4-year universities in Seoul. The outflow of highly educated young people may induce the brain drain. Busan is undergoing both population decline and the problems caused by the brain drain.

A Study on Out-migration of Rural People (농촌(農村)의 인구전출(人口轉出)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究))

  • The rapid economic development of Korea since 1960 has also brought a rapid urbanization process, and recently many rural areas have begun to show actual depopulation, in which particularly the young, productive and high educated groups are leaving for cities. More than 70% of migrators go to large cities such as Seoul, Pusan and Taegu. Their main motives for migration are to seek a job in urban areas. The study showed following results; The rate of migration a year was 1% of total population. Regarding the age of migrators belong to between 10-39 years old, especially migrator aged 10-29 years are comprised 87%. The educational level of migrators was a little higher than that of the residents. Considering the sibling order of migrators, the traditional value system for first son seemed to change. Concerning the place of destination, more than 70% of migrators moved to large cities such as Seoul. Pusan and Taegu. The main motivation of migration was to seek a job in urban areas. The occupation at the place of destination were factory workers, employee at company, students, salesmen, farmers and public officials in that order.
