The purpose of this study was to investigate the relative effects of human capital and social capital on the economic well-being of late middle-aged Koreans. The data from the first wave of KLoSA (Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging) aged 50-64 were used (n=4,040). The major findings were as follows: First, human capital and social capital are both resources that can contribute to increasing the economic well-being of the middle-aged. Second, the relative contribution of human capital to the economic well-being of the middle-aged varied by the level of social capital, including formal network and informal network. Third, the relative contribution of social capital to the economic well-being of the middle-aged varied by the level of human capital, including employment type and educational attainment. Based on empirical results, the implications for social investment in human capital and social capital were provided.
Due to increasing life expectancy, Americans live nearly 20 years after retirement. During this period, elderly persons have to stretch finances to manage the level of living without earnings. However, decision making ability decreases with age. One coping strategy for this problem would be seeking help from others. We examine factors affecting elderly persons' assistance use with respect to financial management using the 2000 Health and Retirement Study (N=3,823). It was found that age, education, health status, and ethnicity significantly affect elderly persons' financial management assistance use. The older-olds, those with lower educational attainment and poorer health status were more likely to use financial management assistance. However, Hispanic elderly were less likely to use financial management assistance.
This study attempted to explore the parents' parental satisfaction in Korea. Subjects who were selected nationwidely consisted of 1237 parents with children of the kindergarten and primary school. Parental Satisfaction Scale was used to examine the related variables pertaining to parental satisfaction. The results yielded the following conclusions; 1) The period of the transition to parenthood was too short. The mean interval between marriage and first child birth was 14.4 months. 2) Whereas fathers experienced greater parental role fulfillment than mother did mothers' employment status was not correlated with parental satisfaction. 3) Number and gender of the child and parent's educational attainment were related to parental satisfaction. However age at parental onset was not found as the related variable.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the discretionary consumption expenditure of Korean urban housewives and the factors contributing to the discretionary consumption expenditure. 535 housewives living in Seoul and Gyungki district were selected and frequencies percentile means standard deviation and multiple-regression analysis were utilized. The results of this study were as follows: First the monthly discretionary consumption expenditure of Korean urban housewives was 592,500won. Particularly the level of clothing expenditure for urban housewives of 135,700won was found to be the highest expenditure among other discretionary expenditures while the level of transportation expenditure of 68,100won was found to be the lowest expenditure. The purpose of this study was to elicit the multi-dimensions of retirement expectations, and explore sub-factors of retirement expectations which predict the possibility of worker's participation to each pre-retirement planning programs. The major findings were as follows: first, this study shows that there are four sub-factors; Imposed frustration, New beginning, Transition to rest, Continuing. And there was a significant difference in retirement expectation according to sex, age, income, and health status. Second, the major affecting factors on participation in pre-retirement planning programs were sex, age, job, educational attainment, and health status. Third, those who have retirement expectations of 'Imposed frustration' tend to attend re-employment, leisure, and health education. Those who have retirement expectations of 'Transition to rest' tend to attend re-employment, inauguration education. And those who have retirement of 'Continuing' tend to attend leisure education.
This study tries to develop the typology of relative costs-benefits perception about the transition to parenthood and explore the group differences in the socio-demographic variables, family context variables, and social support level. For these purpose data was gathered from 342 fathers who experienced the transition to parenthood within past three years. The major findings were as follow. 1. This study examined housework time management strategies between married female home-based workers and on-site workers, and found out the factors affecting the housework time management strategies. The data were collected from 165 married female home-based workers, and 292 married female on-site workers in Pusan and Kyungnam province, by self-administered questionnaire. Frequency distributions, Cronbachs alpha, t-tests, Pearsons correlations, and multiple regression analyses were conducted by SPSS/PC+. The major findings of this study were kas follows: 1) Married female home-based workers more used obtaining additional help and personal time reallocation than married female on-site workers. 2) For married female home-based workers, educational attainment and occupation were significant factors affecting housework time management strategies, and for married female on-site workers, employment hours per week and existence of elders/disability within the family were important variables.
The purposes of this study are to explore mother's involvement in children's education and to examine its impacts on the school adjustment of poor family children. A total of 206 low-income mothers with a child attending elementary or middle school completed a structured questionnaire. Overall, the results show that the mothers tend to involve in their children's education to some degree. But the extent of maternal involvement is not uniform across the types of involvement. In order to analyze factors that affect the school adjustment which is measured as grades and attitudes toward school life, regression is perfomed. The mother-child relationship, the expectation for children's educational attainment and the involvement in school activities are found important in predicting the school adjustment of elementary school students. Also, it is found that the discipline including TV monitoring and the matemal expectation are positively associated with the school adjustment of middle school student.
This study investigated female-head's employment and household economic status of the single-mother households compared to those in the two-parent households using the data from the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study. Major findings are: first, female-heads showed lower educational attainment, lower labor force participation rate, lower occupational status, and lower wage rates than male-heads; second, the level of household income was as 1.3 times as the Minimum Living Cost and the level of household expenditure was close to the Minimum Living Cost; third, one-thirds of single-mother households were in poverty. Based on the results, the implications to public policy were suggested.
