Continued to the previous paper, the present investigation deals with stronitium-90 activities and calcium contents among 54 samples of edible marine algae collected along the coast of Korea during September, 1973 and April, 1974. The calcium contents are variable 2.0-17.8%, and 6.38% on an average. Most of the members investigated contain 2-4% in green and red algae, and 8-10% in brown algae. Strontium-90 activities are 0.32-0.37 pCi/l in sea-water, and 0.80-28.66 pCi$\^$90/Sr/g Ca in edible seaweeds. Among the algal phyla, they are 12.49 in green, 3.34 in brown, and 9.39 pCi$\^$90/Sr/g Ca in red algae, while they are 6.25 pCi$\^$90/Sr/g Ca on an average. In a single species collected at the same season, the highest activities appear mostly from the eastern coast, and from the western and southern coasts, in turn. The green algae, Capsosiphon- Enteromorpha complex show about 3 times higher activities, 28.66 pCi$\^$90/Sr /g Ca compared with the other members showing rather higher activities, and would be an indicator plant of strontium-90 activities of the marine algae along the coast of Korea.
In order to clarify the accumulation of radioactive materials in marine organisms of Korea, the present investigation is carried out with 54 samples of edible seaweeds collected from eight sampling sites along the coast of Korea during September, 1973 and April, 1974. In this paper, ash contents, gross alpha activities and gross beta activities are detected. The ash content is 7.53- 15.95% in the species investigated. Among the algal phyla it is about 13.13% in green algae, 12.77% in brown algae, and 10.77% in red algae on an average. On the other hand, gross alpha activities fluctuate from 180.0 pCi/Kg to 1082.6 pCi /Kg-fresh material experimented, and are 530.72 pCi/Kg on an average. They increase from green to red and brown algae, in turn. The activities in a single species collected at the same season increse from eastern to western and southern coasts of Korea, in turn. Gross beta activities, however, fluctuate from 2.40 nCi/Kg to 22.14 nCi/Kg-fresh material experimented, and 9.03 nCi/Kg on an average. They increase also from green to red nd brown algae, in turn. The gross beta activities are specially higher in Sargassum thunbergii, 22.14 nCi/Kg It is expected that this plant could be an indicator to detect the activities in the marine algae along the coast of Korea.
Continued to the previous papers, the present investigation is carried out to clarify cesium-137 activities and potassium contents among 54 samples of edible marine algae collected along the coast of Korea during September, 1973 and April, 1974. The potassium contents are variable, 1.5-29.6%, and 11.36% on an average, while most of the members contain them about 10-16% generally. Among the algal phyla, they are 13.49% in green, 10.82% in brown and 16.46% in red algae, respectively. Cesium-137 activities are variable, 0.19-8.13 pCi$\^$137/ Cs/g K, and 2.35 pCi$\^$137/Cs/g K on an average in the samples investigated. Among the algal phyla they are 4.35 in green, 2.17 in brown and 0.89 pCi $\^$137/Cs/g K in red algae, respectively. Green algae contain especially higher activities compared with the other two groups. The brown alga, Myelophycus caespitosus shows the highest activities, 8.13 pCi$\^$137/Cs/g K, among the members investigated. Considering the concentration factor, this plant would be an indicator plant of cesium-137 among the marine algae along the coast of Korea.

Despite the abundance of seaweeds from Ulleungdo Island, genetic diversity and distribution of edible brown algae from the island remain unstudied. We analyzed mitochondrial cox3 sequences from 86 specimens collected in the island and from the nearby Korean Peninsula. Our cox3 phylogeny for the first time confirmed the occurrence of fives species from Ulleungdo Island; Petalonia binghamiae, P. fascia, Planosiphon zosterifolius, and two cryptic species previously identified as Scytosiphon lomentaria. P. binghamiae was relatively homogeneous with three haplotypes. P. fascia comprised four haplotypes, which were grouped into two genetic lineages. S. lomentaria was heterogeneous with nine haplotypes and was divided into two cryptic species; one species clustered with taxa from cold waters while the other clustered with taxa from temperate and cold waters. Low genetic diversity in P. binghamiae while high genetic diversity in S. lomentaria from Ulleungdo Island are comparable to patterns observed from other species from the Korean peninsula. Ulleungdo Island, although small in size, is an ideal field laboratory to investigate genetic diversity and distributions of economic marine algae.

In this study, ethanolic extracts from 18 seaweed variants were assessed for hepatoprotective activity against tacrine-induced cytotoxicity in Hep G2 cells. Only one of these, Ecklonia stolonifera Okamura (Laminariaceae), a member of the brown algae, exhibited promising hepatoprotective activity. Bioassay-guided fractionation of the active ethyl acetate (EtOAc) soluble fraction obtained from the ethanolic extract of E. stolonifera, resulted in the isolation of several phlorotannins [phloroglucinol (1), eckstolonol (2), eckol (3), phlorofucofuroeckol A (4), and dieckol (5)]. Compounds 2 and 4 were determined to protect Hep G2 cells against the cytotoxic effects of tacrine, with $EC_{50}$ values of 62.0 and 79.2 $\mu$g/mL, respectively. Silybin, a well characterized hepatoprotective agent, was used as a positive control, and exhibited an $EC_{50}$ value of 50.0 $\mu$g/mL. It has been suggested that the phlorotannins derived from marine brown algae might prove useful sources in the development of novel hepatoprotective agents.
The patterns of fatty acid composition of lipid extracted from eight species of edible marine benthic algae; i. e. two species of green, five of brown and one of red algae, were investigated quantitatively by using gas liquid chromatography. The total lipid contents in average of the algae were $1.51\%$ in the green algae, $2.81\%$ in brown algae and $1.02\%$ in red algae respectively. Upon analyzing fatty acid composition, green algae contained the highest proportion of $C_{16:0}$ acid and comparatively higher content of $C_{18:1},\;C_{18:2}\;and\;C_{18:3}$ acids than the other algae. In brown angae, $C_{16:0}$ acid content was highest, but not more than that of green algae, and $C_{14:0},\;C_{18:1}$ acids were higher than other $C_{16:1},\;C_{18:2}\;and\;C_{18:3}$ acids while the content of $C_{18:0}$ acid was very low. Red algae showed low content of $C_{14:0},\;C_{18:1},\;C_{18:2}\;and\;C_{18:3}$ acids, but the content of $C_{16:0}$ acid was high as a major component. In regard to the composing patterns of carbon number of fatty acid of algae; i. e. $C_{14},\;C_{15},\;C_{16},\;C_{18}\;and\;C_{22}$ and $C_{22}$ acids, the green algae contained $C_{16}$ and $C_{18}$ acids, the brown algae $C_{16},\;C_{18},\;and\;C_{22}$ and $C_{22}$ acids, and the red algae $C_{15},\;C_{16}$, and $C_{18}$ acids as the major component.
In order to investigate chemical components of edible marine algae in Korea, the present work is carried out with ten edible and two non-edible species of brown algae, collected from Cheju-island during October, 28-30 in 1970. Among the general components, water content is about 14-16% to dry weight and the crude protein about 16%, which are almost similar in content compared with several non-cultivate edible land plants. The content of crude fat is about 0.7-2.0%, and that of crude fiber about 3-8%, while the content of crude ash is 9.17-16.89%. The last one is more than two times in content compared with the land plants. The reducing sugar is about 0.27-2.49% in general. On the other hand, among the minerals Ca content is the most abundant, 1.73-2.51%, and the next is S, 1.0-1.8%. Mg and I are around 0.1-1%, while K and Na are about 1% in content. Among the micro-elements, Fe and Zn are about 0.01-0.03%, and Cu and Mn 0.001-0.005% in content. There is no special significant difference in chemical components between the edible and non-edible species of brown algae. Moreover, so far as the present investigation is concerned, there can be found no significant inter-species relationship on the taxonomical or phylogenetical points of view, considering their components.
A new peptide was isolated from an edible brown algae "Undaria pinnatifida" by both two dimensional and ion-exchange resin chromatographies. The peptide was composed of three amino acids, glutamic acid, alanine and aspartic acid.

Total lipid contents from 10 species of marine algae(2 green, 5 brown, and 3 red algae) collected from different places in Korea were examined and their fatty acid compositions were compared among species and habitats. Total lipid(TL) was prominent in green laver(about 7.3~10.1%) of the green algae, in sea mustard and seaweed fusiforme(about 3.1~4.8%) of the brown algae and purple laver(about 4.9~6.4%) of the red algae. Sea mustard and seaweed fusiforme collected at Chungmu contained a relatively high level of TL than that at Yosu and Kijang. The TL content of purple laver showed the highest portion in that collected at Nakdong. Green algae comprised the majority of n-3 fatty acids(29.0~66.3%), which mainly consisted of 16 : 4(n-3) (or 16 : 3 (n-3)), 18 : 3(n-3) and 18 : 4(n-3). Brown algae accounted for a low level of n-3 fatty acids(17.9~36.5%) mainly 18 : 4(n-3), 18 : 3(n-3) and 20 : 5(n-3), whereas the brown algae contained a significant level of n-6 fatty acids(7.23~26.5%) such as 20 : 4(n-6) and 18 : 2(n-6). In the case of red algae, the n-3 fatty acids consisted mostly of 20 : 5(n-3) which scored 53% of polyenoic acids in purple laver collected at Nakdong. The proportion of n-3 fatty acids in algae belonging to the same species was higher in algae of high TL contents. Consequently, TL and n-3 fatty acid levels from the seaweeds studied in this paper were different from their habitats.
The present paper deals with nine kinds of trace metal contents among 79 samples, more than 20 species of edible marine algae collected during 1973∼1975 along the coasts of Korea. Among the metals detected by the atomic absorption spectrometer, Mg content is variable in 2.09∼13.84mg/g-dry on an average and 5.31mg/g-dry in a mean of green, brown and red algae, whereas Fe is 0.148∼2.343 and 0.747mg/g-dry; Mn 0.015∼0.191 and 0.063mg/g-dry; Zn 0.007∼0.082 and 0.030 mg/g-dry; Cu 0.005∼0.054 and 0.017mg/g-dry; Pb 0.0017∼0.082 and 0.0043mg/g-dry Co 0.0009∼0.0024 and 0.0016mg/g-dry; Cd 0.0002∼0.0034 and 0.0011mg/g-dry, and Cr is 0.0007∼0.0074 and 0.0021mg/g-dry, both on an average and in a mean respectively. The trace metal contents in the seaweeds investigated are variable according to species, collecting seasons, places and kinds of metal It is interesting that in Sargassum thunbergii some metal contents such as Fe, Mn, and Zn are specially high in September1974 through the year investigated.
