Anti-Inflammatory and Analgesic Effects of the Components from Some Edible Plants (식용식물에서 분리한 화합물의 항염증 및 진통효과)

  • The anti-inflammatory and analgesic action of the components isolated from some edible plants carried out. We isolated the quercitrin, compound 3 and o-counmaric acid from Cedrela sinensis, Oenanthe javanica and Artemisia princeps var. Orientalis respectively. O-coumaric acid showed the inhibitory effect on carrageenin-induced edema as well as vascular permeability in mice. And we also found the analgesic activity in all compounds isolated from these plants.

  • Eh-jang (fermented aquatic products) of Asia can be classified 4 groups, those are Chot-kal (salted fish guts), Chot-kal Paste, Eh-ganjang (fish sauce) and Shic-hae (lactic acid fermented fish products). The native place of Eh-jang and rice culture is almost same and Eh-jang had been spread out all the area of Asia along with rice culture. Korea has variety of Chot-gal and consumes much Chot-gal that Korea is the culture area of both soybean sauce and Chot-gal. Eh-ganjang had been edible all area of Korea during Chosun Dynasty, but it remains only Southern part of Korea. Korean Chot-gal paste is produced as a form of Kon-chang-yi-chot. Korean Shic-hae had been edible all area of Korea during Chosun Dynasty, but remains at the east coast and some area of Hwang-hae Do and Kyung-sang-nam-do.

  • 1) The study was made about the condition of mycelial growth of some edible wood rot fungi selecting broad leaved tree as host in nature, on conifer sawdust media. 2) The mycelial growth of other fungi except Pholiota squarrosa is inhibited on the media of conifer sawdust. 3) On the sawdust media added the liquid of bran, mycelial growth is ingreased well with little difference in both extractive and non extractive plots.

  • The study was performed under the various conditions, such as the edible parts and particle sizes of Allium, the concentrations, the temperatures, and the pH of heavy metal solutions to investigate their adsorption capacity of heavy metals by genus Allium. The adsorption amount of Cd by Allium in the aqueous solution was apparently higher than that of Zn by them. The larger the particle size of welsh onion and shallot was, the higher the adsorption of Cd was. But the adsorption ratio was not different. As the temperature increased, the amount of heavy metal adsorption increased in general, but the adsorption of Cd by wild garlic, Zn by garlic decreased. Adsorption of Cd and Zn to Allium was not affected by the various pH. The correlation between the amount of components in edible putts of Allium and that of adsorption of heavy metals was significantly high in amino acids containing sulfhydryl radical (-SH) and vitamin B2.

Development of an ELISA kit for the detection of residual sulfadimethoxine in edible animal products (축산물 잔류 sulfadimethoxine 검출용 ELISA kit 개발)

  • An enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed to screen residues of sulfadimethoxine (SDM) in edible animal products. An indirect competitive ELISA was allowed to compete with rabbit anti-SDM for binding to a limited amount of SDM-gelatin conjugate and SDM in serum samples. Sera was diluted 20 times with phosphate buffered saline (PBS) and boiled for 5 minutes to destruct immunoglobulins of serum. Detection limit of this competitive ELISA for SDM was 0.1 ppb or less. Among eight sulfonamide analogues tested for specifity, only sulfamonomethoxine showed significant cross-reaction in the assay. The EC-50 value for sulfamonomethoxine was 3.5 ppm. Recovery of SDM in spiked serum samples between 100 ppb and 500 ppb ranged from 110.7% to 128.9%.

Improvement of Broiler Meat Quality (브로일러 육질의 향상)

  • The consumer demands for quality of meats has become diverse in recent years. The present paper describes mainly the technology to improve the broiler meat quality with special reference to reducing fat contents in edible meats which is the heart of the quality constraints. Abdominal fat deposition in broilers was reduced by feeding of medium-chain triglycerides(MCT), suggesting MCT feeding is useful to produce broiler meat with low fat content. A phase feeding system to aim at improving meat quality that is mainly comprised with partial replacement of dietary protein into phase during 4∼6 weeks increased edible meat yields and reduced abdominal fat deposition and fat contents in breast and thigh meats. Whiteness of fat tissue was intensified by feeding beef tallow or lard in place of yellow grease. Feeding Phaffia yeast containing astaxanthin increased redness of breast and thigh meats and improved visual appearance of meats which may be preferential for consumers. Feeding fish oil reduced abdominal fat deposition and increased EPA and DHA contents of fat tissues. These procedures could be used for manipulation of meat quality to meet consumer demands.

Growth and Telomerase Inhibition of SK-MEL 28 Melanoma Cell Line by a Plant Flavonoid, Apigenin

  • The plant flavonoids, including apigenin which is found in especially high concentrations in edible plants, are reported to protect against chronic diseases including several types of cancer. We observed that apigenin inhibited not only the growth of human melanoma cell line SK-MEL 28 but also the telomerase activity. We also noted the telomerase activity inhibition by genistein, a tyrosine kinase inhibitor found in soybean, which suggests that the telomerase activity of SK-MEL 28 cells may be regulated by the protein phosphorylation. Furthermore, we observed that apigenin induced SK-MEL 28 cell apoptosis with p53 upregulation. Taken together, our results indicate that apigenin plays a role as an antimelanoma component in edible plants.

  • Cellulose is the most abundant organic polymer constituent of the cell wall of green plants and of various forms of algae. The complexity of lignocellulosic biomass is a major challenge in industrial research. Most mushroom species that naturally grow on soil or wood possess cellulases and the corresponding enzymatic system and, potential candidates for the direct bioconversion of softwood polysaccharides into fermentable sugars. However, there have been fewer studies on mushroom cellulases than on fungi such as Trichoderma spp., exploit the full potential of mushroom cellulases. This review will focus on the current status ofmushroom cellulase research and applications and will provide insight into promising future prospects.

Edible vaccine for aquacultured fish: present and prospect (어류 경구백신 현황과 전망)

  • As the capture fishing industry has declined, the aquaculture industry has become an important source of seafood. With this tendency all fish farming will be performed by large-scale farms where the fish are cultivated in much high density and as a result the incidence of infectious diseases increases. Therefore, vaccination has become an increasingly important part of aquaculture as a cost effective method of controlling various diseases. The early fish vaccines were the formalin inactivated bacteria or virus cultures, which were administered by either immersion or injection. Recombinant DNA biotechnology allowed us to develop orally administrated DNA and recombinant vaccines. In terms of the manufacturing process and cost, Lemna and Spirodela is the most efficient and reliable plant expression system for the production of edible vaccine.

Preparation of Kimchi Containing Bifidobacterim animalis DY-64

  • Aero-tolerant microorganisms were isolated from healthy Koreans over the age of 95 years. The microorganisms were then identified based on their morphological and biochemical characteristics and 16S rDNA sequences. The growth properties of the isolated strains were investigated in kimchi. The characteristics of kimchi containing the microorganisms were studied microscopically, physicochemically, and organoleptically. Among 7 aero-tolerant strains, a strain with a 16S rDNA sequence exhibiting 99% homology with Bifidobacterim animalis strain B83 was selected and named B. animalis DY-64. The new strain showed a better acid resistance and salt resistance (p<0.05) than B. animalis ATCC 25527. After 15 days of fermentation in kimchi, the viability of B. animalis DY-64 was about 10%, and the kimchi had a better overall edible quality than conventional kimchi. Thus, it was found that the application of B. animalis DY-64 to kimchi preparation produced a good overall edible quality.
