  • In this study, a design process of robotic cell is presented. This paper focuses only on the automation of workpiece handling with robot. The presented design process enables us to analyze effectiv ely the original production system and to redesign it as an optimum production system with robots. An original production system is analyzed with respect to its economical and technological requirements for automation. If automation of the given production system is feasible, the conceptual design for automation is firstly derived. Next, the detail design is derived for the optimum conceptual design. Finally, an optimum system solution is determined after the economical and technical evaluation of all the derived detail designs. The all specifications of each element of the redesigned production system and its layout are determined at the detail design phase. This paper shows a low cost supporting tool for layout design of robotic cell with SCARA type robots.

  • Economic performances of consecutive multi-span suspension bridges are studied. The material amount and cost estimation formulas of the bridges have been derived in the part 1 of the study. A parametric study is carried out based on the formulas for investigating the different factors' effect on the bridge cost. The factors include the bridge sag, the bridge span, the bridge foundation and the environment condition, etc. Then, an economical layout of the bridges is proposed for different conditions. Lastly, a selection of suspension bridge types is discussed based on the economy of bridges.

  • A study on economic performances of consecutive multi-span suspension bridges is carried out. In this part of the study, material amount and structural cost estimation formulas of the bridges is derived based on the structural ultimate carrying capacity. The bridge cost includes the part of superstructure and the part of substructure. Three types of bridge foundations, bored piles, concrete caissons and floating foundations, are considered in substructure. These formulas are to be used for the parametric study of the bridge cost in order to define its more economical layout under different conditions in the part two of the study.

  • This paper discuss basic functional construction and plant layout of a ELV dismantling system that can maximize the reusability of tarts and the recoverability of materials by dismantling ELV rationally and efficiently. "Island" type was selected for the system configuration considering processing amount, economical efficiency, and effectiveness. The system is supported by the information system, and composed of dismantling stations and handling equipments. The layout of the stations was determined after simulation and optimization using commercial software package, Arena and OptQuest. The objective of the optimization was maximum profit while the system capacity is considered as constraint. The environmental load of ELV can be minimized when the composition and function of each station are embodied in detail and the system is interfaced with shredding operation.

  • In the preliminary design stage of Prestressed Concrete (PSC) Box Girder Bridges, the design factors(including depth, thickness of web, and jacking force) decided by inexperience designer could heavily affect the final design factors. So there is a possibility that the design ends up with an excessively wasteful design. To aim at an economical design with preventing an excessive design, the optimal design program has been developed by using ADS optimal program and SPCFRAME(PSC Bridge analysis program) in these studies. The optimal design program automatically calculates economically optimized design studies. The optimal design program automatically calculates economically optimized design factors by introducing the optimal design techniques of PSC box girder bridge design. The objective function for optimal design is material cost of box girder and constrained functions are constituted with design specifications and workability. The optimal design techniques used the Sequential Unconstraint Minimization Technique (SUMT) with performing the optimal design program. In this study, We designed unprismatic section bridge and prismatic section bridge in the same design condition by optimal design program developed in this study. By analyzing the results we suggested the practical form of tendon's layout comparing the optimal desingns on the basis of each tendon's layout.

A robust multi-objective localized outrigger layout assessment model under variable connecting control node and space deposition

  • In this article, a simple and robust multi-objective assessment method to control design angles and node positions connected among steel outrigger truss members is proposed to approve both structural safety and economical cost. For given outrigger member layouts, the present method utilizes general-purpose prototypes of outrigger members, having resistance to withstand lateral load effects directly applied to tall buildings, which conform to variable connecting node and design space deposition. Outrigger layouts are set into several initial design conditions of height to width of an arbitrary given design space, i.e., variable design space. And then they are assessed in terms of a proposed multi-objective function optimizing both minimal total displacement and material quantity subjected to design impact factor indicating the importance of objectives. To evaluate the proposed multi-objective function, an analysis model uses a modified Maxwell-Mohr method, and an optimization model is defined by a ground structure assuming arbitrary discrete straight members. It provides a new robust assessment model from a local design point of view, as it may produce specific optimal prototypes of outrigger layouts corresponding to arbitrary height and width ratio of design space. Numerical examples verify the validity and robustness of the present assessment method for controlling prototypes of outrigger truss members considering a multi-objective optimization achieving structural safety and material cost.

  • This study presents conceptual information of newly optimized shapes and connectivity of the so-called outrigger truss system for modern tall buildings that resists lateral loads induced by wind and earthquake forces. In practice, the outrigger truss consists of triangular or Vierendeel types to stiffen tall buildings, and the decision of outrigger design has been qualitatively achieved by only engineers' experience and intuition, including information of structural behaviors, although outrigger shapes and the member's connectivity absolutely affect building stiffness, the input of material, construction ability and so on. Therefore the design of outrigger trusses needs to be measured and determined according to scientific proofs like reliable optimal design tools. In this study, at first the shape and connectivity of an outrigger truss system are visually evaluated by using a conceptual design tool of the classical topology optimization method, and then are quantitatively investigated with respect to a structural safety as stiffness, an economical aspect as material quantity, and construction characteristics as the number of member connection. Numerical applications are studied to verify the effectiveness of the proposed design process to generate a new shape and connectivity of the outrigger for both static and dynamic responses.

A Study on the Historic Changes of Yungnam-Ru in Historic Periods and Architectural Building Forms (밀양 영남루 연혁 및 건축형식 변천에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is focused to the historic changes of Yungnam-Ru(嶺南樓), which are based on the site layout, and architectural forms in architectural building history and historic periods analyzed with the historic reference, paintings, and photos. This study is to search the alteration of the types of axis and the formation of spaces in Yungnam-Ru which is the Ru-Gak(樓閣) The conclusion of the architectural changes from the historic period and architectural form which is the belows. The first Yungnam-Ru by name had been used to be called, before it was re-called Yungnam-Ru by Kim Ju in 1365. Therefore, the hypothesis in naming Yungnam-Ru form assumption that the building under the name of Yungnam-Ru was re-named by Kim Ju from the Old Budist Temple called Yungnam-Sa, should re-considered in history. The second, it is considered that Milyang-Sibyi-Kyungdo(密陽十二景圖) as the painting can only be seen the site layout in 1542. It could be compared the differences of the site layouts from in 1542 to the present time. At that time Nyungpadang(凌派堂) was connected the main buildings called Yungnam-Ru Chimrudang(沈流堂),building was seperated with the Yungnam-Ru at that period. In 1542, the main Building(Yungnam-Ru) was consist of 5 spans of columns(from the front) and 2 spans of columns(from the side). Now, the main Building(Yungnam-Ru) has the 5 spans of columns from the front, and two spans of columns short from the side, compared to the present facade. At the past, Chimrudang(building) has the two spans of columns and one span of columns short, compared to the present facade. The third, It supposed that main building, Nyungpadang and Chimrudang in the composite of facade was connected with Wolrang(月廊) and Hunrang(軒廊) after invatioin from japan in 1592. 1844, (Chosun dynasty, Hunjong 10) the Yungnam-Ru was re-builted by maintaining the same concept in site layout of the past, and finally the three buildings was put together with Wolrang and Hunrang. As a result, the plan of the Yungnam-Ru was expanded with many aspects. From 1542 to 1844, the present site-layout gradually completed with three buildings which was spatially connected. The forth, in the middle age of Chosun dynasty, after added Gaeksa(客舍), the building is for the government officer staying temporally from outside province) in the site, the site layout was greatly changed with volume of building. In 1844, the Yungnam-Ru as the Nugak belongs to Miljukwan(密州館) was expanded spacially and formally. After that time, the burned buildings could not have been re-built because of aspects in government ability and economical ability.

Feasibility Analysis on Ground-level Stations and Wireless Power Transfer Technology Applications for Monorail System

  • Subway systems have been a proved method of public transport and are widely used in major cities around the world. However, the time and cost it takes to construct such systems are very high, as it requires underground tunnels. Cities in various countries have implemented monorail systems as public railway transport as it can be more economical and quicker compared to subway systems in terms of construction. In addition, it provides more convenience towards the public as it is not affected to traffic, and also provides an aerial view of the city. However, the overall construction cost for monorail systems is still significantly high, and as a possible solution to further reduce the overall cost, implementation of ground-level stations and wireless power transfer technology has been proposed in this paper. A concept application layout of ground-level stations and wireless power transfer systems has been discussed, using the Daegu monorail Line 3 system as a simulation base. The expected cost for monorail systems implementing ground-level stations and/or wireless power transfer technology has been estimated based on literature survey, and was compared with the current construction cost of Daegu monorail system. Based on comparison, it has shown that implementation of ground-level stations are the most economical, and can be easily implemented for either starting or expanding the monorail line. Implementation of wireless power transfer technology is also economical, but is more feasible when starting a new monorail line as it requires components which will alter the configuration of the train and infrastructure.

Design of a Communication-Aid Circuit to Detect Eye-Gazed Patterns

  • A communication-aid circuit to detect eye-gazed patterns is proposed in this paper. The circuit is an analog-digital mixed system. By determining the direction of eye-gazed pattern, the circuit detects an eye-gazed pattern from 2-dimensional arrayed patterns on a syllabary. Different from conventional systems, the syllabary is moved to overlap the eye-gazed pattern with the center coordinate of screen. Thus, the proposed circuit can avoid a complex calculation of the distance between the eye-gazed point and the center coordinate. Furthermore: an economical size of hardware can be provided since no full-adders are required by employing floating-gate MOSFBT's. The validity of the cricuit design is confirmed by computer simulations. Furthermore, to implement onto an IC chip, the layout design is performed by using a CAD tool, MAGIC.
