  • The potential application of protoplasts useful for studies such as physiology, morphology, genetic engineering, etc has led to the development of suitable methologies for isolation and manupilation of protoplasts from a wide variety of algae (Waaland et al., 1990; Reddy and Fujita, 1991; Chen and Chiang, 1994). Protoplasts technology to seaweeds depends large on the ability to produce viable cells capable of regenerating into whole plantlets (Wakabayashi et al., 1999). Though Capsosiphon fulvescens is one of the important economic seaweeds culturing in Korea, surprisingly protoplasts approach on this species has not been reported so far. Consequently we investigated the various aspects related to the protoplasts of Capsosiphon fulvescens in this study. (omitted)

  • Apple blotch is a major apple disease and recently it causes critical economic losses in apple orchards in Korea. In this review, we described the history of apple blotch researches, ecology and life cycle of Marssonina coronaria, cultural and molecular characteristics and simple isolation method as well. Furthermore, characteristic of apple blotch like symptoms, its cause still unknown, occurs frequently in cv. "Fuji" was described in detail.

  • Thiamine hydrochloride (VB1) has been used as an acid catalyst in organic synthesis. One pot three component Biginelli condensation of dimedone, urea/thiourea and substituted aromatic aldehydes catalyzed by 10 mol % of thiamine hydrochloride (VB1) in solvent free condition under microwave irradiation in good to excellent yields has been investigated. Utilization of microwave irradiation, simple reaction conditions, short reaction time, ease of product isolation, and purification makes this manipulation very interesting from an economic and environmental perspective.

Extraction of high thermally stable and nanofibrous chitin from Cicada (Cicadoidea)

  • Due to the increasing interest in natural biopolymers including chitin, the exploitation of economic and easily accessible chitin sources with good physicochemical properties is nowadays required. In view of this fact, in the current study chitin was extracted and physicochemically characterized from six Cicadas (Hemiptera: Homoptera: Cicadoidea) species collected from Mediterranean region of Turkey (2014-15). Chitin was extracted using a classic extraction method that includes acid and base treatment. TGA results revealed a remarkable increase ($410-412^{\circ}C$) for all the six Cicada species compared to other chitin samples extracted from various sources. For all of the six selected species the chitin contents on the dry basis were determined as 6.7% for Cicadatra atra, 5.51% for C. hyalina, 8.84% for C. platyptera, 4.97% for Cicada lodosi, 6.49% for C. mordoganensis, and 5.88% for Cicadetta tibialis. The surface morphology of chitin isolates from Cicada species was observed to consist of nanofibers and nanopores.

  • This study reviewed on the research trend of sources and utilization of the byproducts(Lignin) from bioethanol production process with lignocellulosic biomass such as wood, agri-processing by-products(corn fiber, sugarcane bagasse etc.) and energy crops(switch grass, poplar, Miscanthus etc.). During biochemical conversion process, only Cellulose and hemicellulosic fractions are converted into fermentable sugar, but lignin which represents the third largest fraction of lignocellulosic biomass is not convertible into fermentable sugars. It is therefore extremely important to recover and convert biomass-derived Lignin into high-value products to maintain economic competitiveness of cellulosic ethanol processes. It was introduced that lignin types and characteristics were different from various isolation methods and biomass sources. Also utilization and potentiality for market of those were discussed.

  • The outbreak of COVID-19 has had a huge impact on human life. The World Bank group (WBG) has stated that 2020 is the worst year since World War II for economic growth. An epidemic of an infectious disease such as COVID-19 is classified as a "social disaster" by law. The social disaster caused by COVID-19 puts certain industries, occupations and vulnerable groups at risk of exclusion and isolation. This paper intends to examine the fluctuations in the consumer price index in the cultural, sports and tourism sector before and after the onset of COVID-19. In addition, it predicts the consumer price index by sector until December 2021 and reveals its implications.

Russia's Perception of Influence on Eurasia and Changing Position on the Caspian Sea (러시아의 유라시아 영향력 인식과 카스피해 입장 변화)

  • The purpose of this study is to clarify why Russia has changed its position on the Caspian Sea Convention to allow cross-Caspian routes. The theory that explains Russia's change of position on Eurasian integration suggests isolation from the West and rising political and economic importance in the Asia-Pacific as cause, but fails to explain the cause of the change in position that could allow Western influence. Thus, this article suggests that a change in Russia's perception on expanding Eurasia's influence as the cause of the change on its position on the Caspian Sea.

  • In this study, a seismic reinforcement method was studied to improve the seismic performance of aged bridges. The construction method developed in this study is a compression-only bridge seismic reinforcement method, and has excellent economic feasibility and workability compared to existing construction methods. In the case of aged bridges, there was an advantage that could compensate for the disadvantages that it was difficult to apply the existing reinforcement method. For the newly developed method, the effect of reinforcement was analyzed through resin analysis. As a result of the analysis, when the reinforcement was applied, the axial reinforcement effect was excellent, and the field applicability was excellent as it showed better results than the existing seismic isolation backing method.

  • For the preliminary study on tobacco cell fusion as one of new breeding techniques, the conditions that would be most effective in isolation, fusion, and culture of tobacco protoplasts were examined ; 1. The enzyme solution of 0.5% macerozyme and 2% cellulase( or meicellase) was the most economic and efficient in isolating protoplasts from tobacco leaves. 2. The proper incubation period of tobacco leaves in cell wall digesting solution was 4 hours. 3. As an osmotic stabilizer, sorbitol or mannitol solutions were employed. The concentration of 0.5~0.7 M of either hexitol gave satisfying results as the osmotic stabilizer. 4. The calcium concentration appeared to be an important factor in protoplast fusion. The adhesion of protoplasts was enhanced by enrichment of calcium ion in PEG solution. The highest frequency of protoplast fusion was obtained when tobacco protoplasts were incubated in PEG solution. containing 9mM CaCl2. 5. Cell divisions of the isolated protoplasts were continued and have generated colonies when they were grown on B-5 medium at 28$^{\circ}C$.

Application of Dynamic $\bar{x}$-R Control Chart for Advanced Phase Isolation Ditch (APID) Process (APID공정 내 공정진단을 위한 dynamic $\bar{x}$-R 관리도의 적용)

  • Advanced Phase Isolation Ditch (APID) process was studied to develop economic retrofitting technology, for the plants where retrofitting of common activated sludge process is required. In this study, to evaluate and monitor the effluent water quality ($BOD_5$, SS, T-N, and T-P) and operating conditions (Influent, SVI, SRT, and HRT) as process capable and stable parameters for treating municipal wastewater, a demonstration plant was installed and operated in the existing sewage treatment plant of P city. During this study, the average effluent $BOD_5$, SS, T-N, and T-P concentrations were 7.7, 5.6, 10.8, and 1.6 mg/L. Trend analysis of influent $BOD_5$, SS, T-N, and T-P in APID process were illustrated that APID process need for more strong APID process management on the winter session, such as developing new intermediated aeration mode, operating methods, and managements strategy. At the application of control chart, the signal of uncommon effects at APID process was determined much higher existing control chart tntr conventional control chart in this study. These results indicate that conventional control chart has been collected and determined cleary signal at only stable situation. Therefore, newly developed APID process of dynamic control chart can be one of the useful tool for monitoring and management process.
