  • The Dongrae thermal water area located at the southeastern marginal part of the Korean Peninsula is one of the oldest hot springs in Korea. The Dongrae thermal water shows Na-Cl type of water chemistry, whereas the shallow cold groundwater is Ca(-Na)-$HCO_3$ type. In this paper, we discuss the age of the Dongrae hot spring, i.e. groundwater cycle among meteoric water-surface water-shallow groundwater-hot spring water. The $^{87}Sr/^{86}Sr$ ratios of the thermal water in Dongrae area range from 0.705663 to 0.705688 and are lower than those of groundwater, surface water and rain water as well as aquifer bearing granite. These Sr isotopic signatures in the Dongrae thermal water indicate that the circulation rate between thermal water and current meteoric water including groundwater, surface water and rain water in the Dongrae area should be very slow. The $^{14}C$ age of the Dongrae hot spring water range from $1,271{\pm}36$ BP(before present) to $2,467{\pm}36$ BP whereas that of the shallow groundwater is $-495{\pm}33$ BP. This suggests that the period of groundwater cycle among meteoric water, surface water, shallow groundwater and hot spring should be more than 1,270 years. Then, it also indicates that the present Dongrae hot spring may be a mixed water between the old thermal water heated for at least 1,270 years and the present shallow cold groundwater.

  • As many parts of Korea are mountainous, many tunnels have been constructed to be in step with rapid economic development since 1970's. However, the interest on maintenance of tunnels is far less than the awareness of need for tunnels. As the tunnel maintenance system is the responsive maintenance system which responds to the problems found during the inspection, it will be very difficult to respond to each problem with the limited budget and manpower of the government agencies when the number of aged tunnels rapidly increase in the future. As such, this study presents the need for the LCCA (Life Cycle Cost Analysis) based tunnel asset management system to transform the tunnel maintenance to a preventive management system in a strategic and long-term viewpoint and proposes the framework for development direction. It observed the asset management implementation cases of social infrastructure in other countries and analyzed the need for asset management technique to manage the tunnels in Korea. Moreover, it applied the LCCA model, which is the economic and engineering quantitative decision making technique, for tunnel asset management to present the concrete direction for development of an asset management model and designed the R&D framework to systemize it.

  • Green technologies of buildings are spreading for saving resource and energy consumption during life cycle of buildings. However, selection of optimized the technologies for applying projects is needed a lot of time and costs. Therefore prioritization is necessary to apply the technologies for buildings. An evaluation of economic value for the technologies is significant for prioritization of the technologies, however, the current evaluation system of economic value for technologies is not reflected the accurate features of the technologies. Green technologies have the objectives for reducing the emission of CO2 and saving the cost during the whole lifecycle of buildings. Thus the evaluation of economic feasibility for green technologies is needed to include the economic value from improving the environment. This paper developed the economic evaluation method integrated with LCC and LCA to accurately analyze the economic value for green technologies. Moreover, this paper drew the priority of the technologies by conducting case studies with the integrated method and analyzing the results with AHP. The conclusion of case studies, Green technologies is worth more if to include the economic value from improving the environment. Then in analysis of priority, Green intelligent component technologies were rated the highest. The conclusion of the study is able to utilize the supporting tool for making decision to select the optimized technologies for the projects and precedence study for developing future research of prioritization for green technologies. The future study for improving the developed method will supplement the various evaluation factors and apply the detailed weight to analyze the priority of green technologies.

  • In this study, a solar thermal system is designed to provide hot water and electricity for improvement of solar thermal energy availability in an apartment complex. The electricity is generated with Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) by the solar thermal energy. R134a, R141b and R245fa are selected for operating fluid of the solar thermal ORC system. ORC with R245fa shows the best performance based on the variation of pressure. The irreversibility of component showed that the technology advance of the evaporator ensures a performance improvement. The sensitivity study results indicate that the turbine performance is most effective way to improve the performance of ORC system. An economic analysis showed that approximately 50% more income could be achieved by a solar thermal ORC system with a hot water supply.

  • It is theoretically known that recuperator can bring a significant increase in thermal efficiency of the gas turbine unit, but it also has disadvantages such as pressure loss in the flow channel, thermal stress and increase in weight. Therefore it is necessary to consider all pros and cons of this equipment in view of economic aspects throughout its life cycle. Recuperator has been applied mostly in the power ranges of $20\sim300kW$ class industrial units but hasn't been used as a larger power generation unit except for naval applications in mid twentieth century. Present paper considered the applicability of a recuperator cycle in term of pressure loss, part load aspects for power generation purpose.

  • Terms of trade shocks have been considered one of the main driving forces causing business cycle fluctuations in small open economies. Despite their importance in business cycles of small open economies, it is hard to find a serious study in existing literature investigating their implications on monetary policy under a small open economy. Considering it, this paper studies what form of monetary policy rule is the most adequate for a small open economy where terms of trade shocks are dominant factors in generating its business cycle fluctuations. For this purpose, various implementable monetary policy rules frequently analyzed in existing literature are compared in terms of social welfare levels which they can provide for the economy respectively. Main results of this paper can be summarized as follows. First, for a small open economy where terms of trade shocks are main driving forces of its business cycle fluctuations, the nontradable goods price inflation targeting can provide higher level of social welfare than other traditional monetary policy rules such as the CPI inflation targeting or the fixed exchange rate regime. Second, the social welfare improvement of the non-tradable goods price inflation targeting is more apparent when export goods price shocks are more important than import goods price shocks.

  • The economics of a passive solar heating system (PSHS) with the pebble bed heat storage was evaluated, and the applications of the PSHS were analyzed, in this study. The results are as follows: The heating load, solar heat gain, and stored heat/year of the PSHS in the solar house model were found to be 10,778MJ, 3,438MJ, and 11,682MJ, respectively. The yearly energy expenses of the PSHS and the alternative heating system (conventional coal heating system, CCHS), which uses coal, were found to be USD 1.60/year and USD 60.90/year, respectively, and the yearly expenses of the PSHS were found to be 38 times less than those of the alternative heating system (CCHS). If it will be supposed that the life cycle of the passive solar heating system, according to the results of the LCC analysis in the two systems, is 40 years, the total expenses for the life cycle of the PSHS and the CCHS will be USD 1,431.50 and USD 2,740.00, respectively. The period for the investment payback of the PSHS is six years.

  • Advancing the estrous cycle of mares is an essential breeding strategy that is routinely conducted by Thoroughbred breeders to improve economic outcomes. For this purpose, Equilume light masks have been developed as an alternative to existing technologies such as artificial lighting or hormonal treatments because they are considered as valid as existing methods with additional animal welfare advantages. For example, with the Equilume light masks, horses can be let out into the pasture, whereas they have to be kept indoors during lighting treatment. Because the function of Equilume light mask on the estrous cycle of mares is influenced by environmental factors such as nutrition condition and temperature, Equilume light mask should be studied in various environments. The objective of the present study was thus to verify the effect of Equilume light masks on the onset of the estrous cycle in Thoroughbred mares in South Korea. Mares were randomly selected and separated into two groups at two Thoroughbred horse breeding farms. The mares in the treatment group were equipped with Equilume light masks from November 18 to February 10 the following year. The body condition, the number and size (> 35 mm) of uterine follicles, and the uterine horn score of the mares were assessed on January 6 and February 10. The body condition scores were not different between the two groups. The treatment with the Equilume light mask had no positive effects on developing follicles and the reproductive tract. In conclusion, the use of Equilume light masks did not influence the seasonal resumption of the estrus cycles in Thoroughbred mares in South Korea.

  • This study analyzes the effects of women's labour force participation and work-family reconciliation support on life-cycle fertility in Korea. The analysis is based on the longitudinal data from Korean Labour and Income Panel Study (KLIPS), which include the available information on life-cycle fertility and employment history. Employing a dynamic model of fertility, we estimated the life-cycle fertility of all the 15-49 years old women considered in this study by using a duration model. The major results of this study were as follows: First, women's labour force participation had a negative effect on the first birth, second birth, and all births (transition to births starting at different parities). Women's employment tended to lengthen the interval between births. Second, the availability of maternal leave had a positive effect on the first birth and all births for working women. Providing maternal leave to working women decreased the opportunity cost of childbearing and in turn, reduced the interbirth interval of women. However, the availability of parental leave had no significant effect on the births of working women. Third, the financial support for childcare had a positive effect on the first birth and all births. The economic support for childcare led to the reduction in the interbirth interval of women by increasing the probability of births. The use of a childcare center for the first child, which substitutes for the time that women needed to take care of their children, classified as time-intensive consumption goods, did not have any effect on the second birth. Fourth, the part-time employment of women had a positive effect on the second birth. A flexible working time schedule tended to decrease the interval between the first and the second births.
