Meteorological data is one of the important factors in the calculation of building energy demand. The purposes of this study are to review the limitations of the typical meteorological data of ECO2 program and to create the new typical meteorological data and then analyze the building energy demands for additional regions which are not included in the existing 13 region in the ECO2 program. The extended typical meteorological data to a total of 33 regions were based on IWEC(International Weather for Energy Calculations) data files and were created in the form applicable to the building energy efficiency rating certification system. As a result of comparing the heating energy demands of a representative region with the surrounding regions in each of five regions in Korea, the variance of Cv(RMSE) ranged from 36% to 344% and MBE ranged from -32% to 190% for the whole regions. This suggests that the difference of heating energy demand may vary greatly depending on the region where the meteorological data is used and the meteorological data of more detailed regions is needed for reliable calculation of building energy demand.
Green Standard for Energy and Environmental Design(G-SEED) has been used for environmental friendly building certification since 2002. The certification criteria initialed with multi-residential building and now it expands to 10 criteria for new and existing building types. The purpose of this study is to understand current recognition of G-SEED from the survey of multi-complex residences in newtown. From the general question, 75.2% of responders answered the period of living term between 1~3 years, 58.6% lived in $102.48{\sim}132.23m^2$ residential area and 65.2% owned their residences. The 43.2% of respondents recognized that their residences gained G-SEED certification by G-SEED emblem(31.6%). This is the significant meaning to understand public recognition of G-SEED and how to approach the strategy for raising the G-SEED recognition. The responders expected positive influence for economical value from G-SEED and also 75.3% of responders agreed with that G-SEED would be a decision make to buy and rent their residences. Second, residents responded that the consideration issue for green building is energy & prevention of environmental pollution(27.7%) which carries equal concern in G-SEED criteria category. The result of this survey verifies that the current level recognition of G-SEED of the responder's perspectives still is not well-known but it confirmed they have a positive expectation. Therefore, from this result, G-SEED needs to draw road map with detail plans for developing G-SEED with public participation.
The Product Carbon Footprint Labeling has been run for more than four years by the Ministry of Environment and there are number of products labeled by KEITI(Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute), as for declaring products with their carbon emission during life cycle stages. There are several categories for certifying products by the characteristics of usage. Building products which are applied to a building as combined components or elements, are classified as production goods which means that the products are chosen by a business, not by a final consumer. In this paper, current status of PCF labeling has been reviewed focused on building products and the characteristics of carbon emission by a kind of product such as interior products, window products, structural products, system products and others. Until Dec. 2013, 82 products has been labeled and it covers about 53% among labeled product goods by the certification. Among the labeled building products, interior products are main products. From the results of comparison, variations of emission amounts by products have been found and the cause of variation could be explained by the purpose and material properties of products. However, the exact reason for variations cannot be acquired because of lack of information and the short operation period of the certification program. Further studies and more products are needed to be studied and analyzed focused on the emission characteristic by each product and to suggest reduction technologies for sustainable building products.
The Green growth has been demanded in all industrial sectors due to environmental destruction and exhaustion of natural resources. Buildings have consumed 1/3 of the total energy and 40% of natural resources and have accounted for 50% of $CO_2$ emissions and 30-50% of waste materials. In 1991, BREEAM(Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) of the British BRE(Building Research Establishment) had begun reduction of $CO_2$ emissions and energy saving movements, in which all the countries around the world have participated. The Republic of Korea has taken part in this trend by declaring a "National Vision in the Green Growth" in 2008 and implementing regulations on "Low Carbon, Green Growth" in 2010. G-SEED(Green Standard for Energy and Environmental Design) based on GBCS(Green Building Certification System) has been actively promoted for its application. This study has limited its scope to G-SEED office buildings. It has conducted surveys of problems and assessment items of the G-SEED identified in the preceding study by the AHP(Analytic hierarchy process) method. The purpose of this study is to conduct a comparison analysis of problems and ranking of evaluation items recognized in the survey and to be presented as reference materials for G-SEED system improvements at its next amendments.
The purpose of this study is to establish the assessment baseline of $CO_2$ emissions from building operations in the view of GHG reduction policy in Korea. The assessment baseline of $CO_2$ emissions shall be used in GHG policy and Carbon Credits in building sectors, but the assessment baseline has not been studied enough or established yet. Also, $CO_2$ emissions from building operations will be variable according to the building occupancy. Therefore the baseline will be different and this study aimed at the establishment of the assessment baseline for residential apartments and office buildings firstly. After reviews of BEER and international standards for building $CO_2$ emissions such as ISO and UNEP-SBCI documents, the analysis of BEER certification data has been pursued for 292 residential apartment complexes and 65 office buildings in South Korea during 2004~2012. As analysis results, the assessment baseline was set to 23.03 $kg{\cdot}CO_2/m^2{\cdot}yr$ or 1.95 $t{\cdot}CO_2/unit{\cdot}yr$ for residential apartment complexes, and 95.91 $kg{\cdot}CO_2/m^2{\cdot}yr$ for office buildings according to the BEER certification basis. Additional assessment baselines were calculated according to year basis, region basis, public and private basis, and GHG policy basis. Finally, the established baseline for residential apartment complexes has been applied for the pilot project in M district, Seoul, and showed 24.97% reduction rate according to the BEER certification basis.
Purpose: As we are facing the global crisis from the climate change and energy depletion, urgent actions are needed to design a integrated sustainable building. This paper suggests that a sustainable design awards can stimulate for architects to bring the cutting-edge ideas into a realized building in comparison to green building certification system. AIA COTE Top 10 design awards, organized and run by AIA(American Institute of Architects) COTE(Committee on the Environment) from 1997, is analyzed as a case study. By researching the core of the AIA COTE Top 10 design awards system in terms of evaluation measures and submission requirements, meaningful suggestions were drawn to supplement Korea Green Building Awards system and to design and realize leading green buildings in Korea. Method: The comparison between AIA COTE Top 10 and Korea Green Building Design Awards was made in terms of evaluation measures, submission requirements, and green building certification systems. Result: This paper finally suggests the following three points in conclusion: 1) Set the standards of evaluation measures reflecting the three aspects(economy, environment, social) of sustainability, 2) Set the qualitative evaluation measures and corresponding submission requirements that can apply in the design awards in comparison to green building certification system, 3) Develop and balance submission requirements in response to evaluation measures to proceed systematic evaluation of the green buildings.
Purpose - The number of consumers adopting a lifestyle of health and sustainability has recently increased with the rise of trends in healthy living. The size of the organic agricultural product market has also increased given that these consumers prefer consuming environmentally friendly products that promote family health. However, awareness of organic agricultural products remains insufficient because of the characteristics of the Korean organic agriculture system, which only focuses on food safety inspection. The object of this research is to suggest a policy approach to increase understanding and to expand the purchasing of organic agricultural products by analyzing the influence of customer recognition of such products on their willingness to repurchase. Research design, data, and methodology - This study used binomial logistic regression analysis with the aim of explaining the effects of consumers' socio-demographic characteristics, their awareness of the equivalence arrangement for organic food and of the abolishment of low-pesticide agricultural product certification, and their viewing of negative broadcasts about organic agricultural products on their repurchase intention of such products. A questionnaire survey was conducted with 655 respondents who were in their 20s, lived either in Seoul or in its metropolitan area, and had purchased organic agricultural products. Result - From the results of the analysis, the majority of the respondents recognized organic agricultural products, but they found their prices to be expensive. The majority of the respondents were also aware of the certification system and the reliability of organic agricultural products. However, the results indicate that efforts need to be made to recover consumer trust as many respondents stated that their trust levels in these products were low. In general, those purchasing organic agricultural products were satisfied, but those answering "very satisfied" were not in the majority. Binomial logistic regression analysis results revealed that repurchase intention decreased as consumers viewed a greater number of negative broadcasts about these products. On the other hand, repurchase intention increased as they became more aware of the abolishment of low-pesticide certification. Repurchase intention also increased as income increased, as the number of family members decreased, and when a consumer was a member of a consumer organization. In addition, the older the consumers were who watched the TV programs, the smaller the number of family members that were aware of the abolishment of low-pesticide agricultural product certification and, the higher the income of the consumers aware of organic equivalence arrangement, the greater their repurchase intention. Conclusion - External stimuli, such as negative TV programs on organic agricultural products and the abolishment of the low-pesticide agricultural product certification, relevant social issues and systems, influence consumer repurchase intention. To that end, positive environmental and ecological broadcasting about organic agricultural products would contribute to an increase in purchasing. Additionally, this could be used for promotion and marketing plans as the results indicate that trust in organic agricultural products would cause a positive repurchasing effect.
This study has been conducted focusing on the analysis of the turn-key proposal for Gimpo-Han River New City. The study expected that it would come up with design trends and introduction properties of each plan for the eco-friendly development of an apartment house. The concept of environment-friendly design was thought in four parts: 'Land use and transportation,' 'Ecological environment', 'Energy resource and environmental impact' and analysis factors of each part were chosen by specific items from the prospective researches and guidelines that already given on the projects. In conclusion, a proper development of the environmental-friendly apartment house will not be achieved unless the designers try to overcome their prejudice against eco-friendly planning elements applications. Along with the designers' attempt, it is also necessary to review the evaluation articles of the certification system for the existing environmental-friendly structures as well as to compensate and establish detailed evaluation standards. As the problems are being worked on, an integrated, effective evaluation standard for the eco-friendly planning elements will be determined. This way, an environmental-friendly residential development with a better quality will be eventually realized.
G-SEED aims for establishing green environmental building with energy saving and has started for evaluating with multi-residential complex in 2002 by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure & Transport (MOLIT) and the Ministry of Environment to develop the current 10 building types and new & existing building types to be applied. Since G-SEED has been developed for more than 10 years, the strategy of globalization is needed with constant review itself and comparison between other assessments to understand current situation from the global perspectives. This study draws similarities and differences of G-SEED and LEED criteria by the comparison from re-constructed LEED criteria based on G-SEED. "Energy & Pollution" is the most concerned category in both assessments as the result of analysis on category rates. Next concerns are "Material & Resources", "Indoor Environment" and "Water Management". The unique categories in both criteria are "Ecological Environment" in G-SEED and "Innovation & Design Process" in LEED. The conclusion of this research is that two assessments are organized at different locations and with different strategies for developing green building but there are common concerns such as energy saving, material use, indoor environment. As a result, it is expected to use fundamental data for developing G-SEED for global standard.
Objectives: Stress hormone (cortisol) can be used to analyze psychological and physiological changes and healing effects before and after in blood and saliva. Here it is applied to scientifically validate the effects of the healthy forest experience in Deogyusan Mountain National Park. Methods: A healthy forest experience program was provided to college students (males and females) at Deogyusan National Park. Stress, hormones (cortisol), blood pressure, pulse, oxygen saturation and stress, anxiety, and depression were measured. This study was designed to objectively analyze the effects of stress hormones before and after. Results: Depression, stress, anxiety, and satisfaction with the forest experience program in Deogyusan National Park were very high in reliability in terms of Cronbach's Alpha: depression scored 0.910, stress 0.558, anxiety 0.934, program satisfaction 0.826, and program effectiveness 0.894. Conclusions: In this study, we utilized the Healthy Forest Experience Program and the 'Health and Medical Center Health Record Book' of the Health Forest Experience Program (Ministry of Environment's Environmental Education Certification Program). In the future, we will seek ways to utilize saliva since it is easier to collect than blood samples and apply the stress hormone cortisol as a saliva authentication program. In addition, by implementing ecological welfare programs in which nature and human beings coexist through systematic preservation and restoration, the national park management can utilize ecological, scenic and cultural services wisely. We expect to be able to provide exploration and welfare services.
