  • As for cluster-based wireless sensor networks (WSNs), cluster lifetime is one of the most important subjects in recent researches. Besides reducing the energy consumptions of the clusters, it is necessary to make the clusters achieve equal lifetimes so that the whole network can survive longer. In this paper, we focus on the cluster lifetimes in multi-hop WSNs with cooperative multi-input single-output scheme. With a simplified model of multi-hop WSNs, we change the transmission schemes, the sizes and transmission distances of clusters to investigate their effects on the cluster lifetimes. Furthermore, linear and uniform data aggregations are considered in our model. As a result, we analyze the cluster lifetimes in different situations and discuss the requirements on the sizes and transmission distances of clusters for equal lifetimes.

  • This study is aimed to develop a new type of micro cross-flow hydro turbine which has very simple structure and relatively high efficiency. Micro eco cross-flow hydro turbine (ECFT) is proposed to apply in the ranges of very low and middle specific speeds in order to extend the operational range of the turbine. In order to not only obtain a basic data for a new design method of ECFT but also improve the turbine efficiency, experiments and CFD analysis on the performance and internal flow characteristics of the turbine model are conducted. According to the present study results, anti-recirculation block (ARB) and relatively wide turbine width with high flow rate improve the turbine efficiency.

  • In this study, water quality and acute toxicity using Daphnia magna were analyzed to investigate the eco-toxicological substances identified as statistical analysis and propose a management plan for the effluent of Banwol industrial complex, Ansan, Gyeonggi-do. Cu, Zn, F, Mn concentrations in the effluent far exceeded the US standards to protect the aquatic ecosystem and eco-toxicity values were 5 ~ 22 TU. However, concentrations of heavy metals significantly decreased after Ansan public wastewater treatment plant operating a biological treatment and toxicity values were 0 TU. Zn, Cr, F and Cu in the effluent showed very strong and strong positive correlations with eco-toxicity values, respectively. Regression analysis resulted in an equation between toxicity and Zn, TU = $4.884{\times}Zn$ (mg/L) -0.391 showing Zn concentration should be managed less than 0.285 mg/L to keep the eco-toxicity (TU) less than 1.

  • This study makes an attempt to appraise how much successful both (Ham-Pyung) Butterfly Festival and (Mu-Ju) Firefly Festival are in the view point of ecology-friendly effects, and based on this appraisal, searches for desirable and developmental directions of other eco-festivals. The empirical analysis of the study shows that even if the Butterfly Festival turns out to be more famous than the Firefly Festival, the latter is confirmed to be more eco-friendly than the former. The fact that the latter is more eco-friendly seems to be due to the fact that the subject matter, that is the theme, of the festival is the fireflies which are not only natural monuments but also peculiar in-site-resources specific to Mu-Ju. This fact suggests that the other eco-festivals, newly emerging ones in particular, need to find and designate in-site-resources inherent in their regions as the theme, as far as possible.

  • Eco-village is an alternative community which applies ecological principles to the development of human ecosystem in order to achieve sustainability. Ansolgi village in Korea has been established five years ago, in 1999, by a group of environment conscious families. The author has visited and stayed in the village twice during last two years, for several days each time, and observed and surveyed the changes of physical, social, and cultural aspects of the community. They adopt more environment friendly techniques in building their houses, sewage system, roads and parking, and growing their own foods, and so on. The residents have diverse jobs, many of them outside the village as the village lacks job opportunities. The residents themselves often question the sustainability of the village and reluctant to identity Ansolgi as an eco-village. Most residents joined the community with their own images of an eco-village and find it difficult to reach consensus on what the eco-village should be like and how it should be managed and maintained. Residents wish to get government assistances and professional guidance. This paper concludes it is still very difficulty and problematic to establish an eco-village in Korea.

  • This study measured consumer's recognition, reliability, emotion and images about current eco-marks as well proposed an eco-mark rating scale and mark designs to improve consumer's trust on the fashion product marks. We used a questionnaire survey to collect data from 150 persons about knowledge, interests, and practice on eco fashion products in relation to trustfulness and positive images for three domestic and three international eco-marks. We evaluated and gave eco scores to six fiber-type products (cotton, organic cotton, wool, polyester, biodegradable polyester and nylon) in terms of consumer's use, water & land consumption, waste amount, carbon footprint, and toxicity. We suggested a new 5-level rating scale for eco marks, which quantified the concept of environmental friendliness of fiber products. The design for eco-mark of rating scale showed the total grade with two sub scores of environmental sides and human sides developed with an improved visual understanding for consumers. The design is one through benchmarking the energy-consumption efficiency mark, which is familiar to consumers such as a half circle shape to save environment resources to alarm consumers to environment problems.

  • Stellaria sessiliflora Y. Yabe (Caryophyllaceae), which is known to be distributed throughout Japan excluding Okinawa, was recently found on Jeju Island in Korea. Reports on the Japanese flora state that this species is distributed on Jeju Island, and a photograph of one specimen (Slide No. 6294) collected from Jeju Island by Ohwi in May 1935 confirms this. Additionally, specimens at the National Arboretum and Korea Forest Research Institute indicate that S. sessiliflora has occurred on Jeju Island for a considerable amount of time. However, the species has never been officially listed in the flora of Korea. Stellaria sessiliflora is distinguished from S. media by having broader leaves with a slightly undulate margin, petiolate leaves on the upper part of the stem, and 10 stamens. The local name 'Geu-Neul-Byeol-Kkot' is given to the species based on its shady habitat under deciduous broadleaf forest. Details of the morphological characters, an illustration, the type specimen, voucher specimen data, and photographs of Stellaria sessiliflora in Korea are presented.
