Energy Management and Performance Evaluation of Fuel Cell Battery Based Electric Vehicle

  • Plug-in Hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) show great potential to reduce gas emission, improve fuel efficiency and offer more driving range flexibility. Moreover, PHEV help to preserve the eco-system, climate changes and reduce the high demand for fossil fuels. To address this; some basic components and energy resources have been used, such as batteries and proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells (FCs). However, the FC remains unsatisfactory in terms of power density and response. In light of the above, an electric storage system (ESS) seems to be a promising solution to resolve this issue, especially when it comes to the transient phase. In addition to the FC, a storage system made-up of an ultra-battery UB is proposed within this paper. The association of the FC and the UB lead to the so-called Fuel Cell Battery Electric Vehicle (FCBEV). The energy consumption model of a FCBEV has been built considering the power losses of the fuel cell, electric motor, the state of charge (SOC) of the battery, and brakes. To do so, the implementing a reinforcement-learning energy management strategy (EMS) has been carried out and the fuel cell efficiency has been optimized while minimizing the hydrogen fuel consummation per 100km. Within this paper the adopted approach over numerous driving cycles of the FCBEV has shown promising results.

Survey and Analysis of Power Energy Usage of University Buildings (대학건축물의 전력에너지 사용량 조사 및 분석)

  • For the past seven years, the increase in the energy consumption of universities in Korea has been 3.7 times higher than the overall increase in the energy consumption across Korea (22.5%). This is an example that shows that universities have been a massive source of greenhouse gases. Such an increase has been attributed to the new and expanded construction of architectural structures on campus. Many people argue that the increasing number of buildings may cause waste of energy and loss of efficiency. Therefore, this study was conducted as a preliminary study to derive energy efficiency measures for new university buildings. The two aspects of energy-saving as required by the eco-friendly structure certification standards have been applied to analyze the use of new/renewable energy and the energy consumption of new university buildings that have applied light density and light engineering methods. Based on these results, the major sources of energy of existing buildings and new university buildings were compared to comparatively discuss how effectively they improve energy performance.

  • In this work, hydrogen production by a 2-step water-spritting thermochemical cycle based on metal oxides redox pairs was investigated on the bases of the thermodynamics and technical feasibility. Also, a 2nd-law analysis performed on the closed cyclic process indicates a maximum exergy conversion efficiency of 7.1% when using a solar cavity-receiver operated at 2300K and air/Fe3O4 molar ratio = 10.

  • As environmental problems become a problem of survival, interest in eco-friendly energy is increasing to improve the environment. So, demand for eco-friendly fuels such as hydrogen, LPG and CNG is increasing. In particular, Korea, which relies on imports of most fuels, is investing in the development of hydrogen energy, which is favorable in terms of high production volume and energy independence. However, As demand grows every year, a variety of accidents occur in various ways, ranging from small leak incidents to massive fires and explosion, thus research needs to be done. So, in this study, compared and analyzed cases of hydrogen, LPG, CNG accidents occurring at domestic and overseas refueling stations. and various programs were used for assessing risk, estimated the flame length due to gas leakage and evaluated the dangerous distance.

  • Energy harvesting technology is drawing attention as a means of collecting various eco-friendly energy and accumulating residual energy. Recently, differential power processing (DPP) is being developed as part of energy harvesting. This is being studied as a solution to the loss of power generation between power modules and the problems caused by module small losses depending on the size of power production. In this paper, we propose the necessity of the DPP by comparing and analyzing energy harvesting related module integration system and power supply efficiency of DPP. The power efficiency of the converter and the power difference between the wind power and the photovoltaic power supply have been changed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed system.

  • Since 2010, enhancement of the building energy efficiency and certification system and public office building should have been acquiring the first grade of Building Energy Efficiency. The Building Energy Efficiency Rating evaluation tool and Dynamic Analysis Energy simulation program for Building Energy Efficiency are widely used. The suitability to those programs have been discussed as a variety of programs have been used accordingly. In this study, evaluated the characteristic of Building Energy Efficiency Rating tool(ECO2) of the business building. At a result, the variables on the Weather Data, building Profile and building Load property in hourly between those Building Energy Efficiency evaluation tools have different.

  • This paper presents a case study to investigate the monthly calculation method of ISO 13790 applied for a office building. The energy performance analysis according to improvement of insulation and air permeability of windows in K office buildings is investigated by means of building energy efficiency rating tool ($ECO_2-OD$). The K building energy system is tested experimently by the measurement of PMV(predicted mean vote) for the control of indoor thermal environment and heat transmission coefficient of windows and interior walls respectively, before and after the example K office building is remodeled passively. Therefore, Internet based energy assessment program of energy efficiency rating of office building can be applied as a program for the annual energy requirement and for evaluation of energy savings from the experimental and simulation results.

A Study on the Lighting Energy Performance Analysis of a Shading Device based on Visual Comfort (시각적 쾌적성을 고려한 차양장치의 조명에너지 성능 분석 방법에 관한 연구)

  • The shading device on the window of the building can be an passive solution to reduce the cooling load and lighting energy, as well as improving the indoor comfort. It is also an architectural element that must be considered for building energy-efficient buildings such as eco-buildings and zero-energy buildings. However, due to various building environments and various shading devices, the installation of excessive shade may lead to the risk of losing the effectiveness of windows. In this study, we propose a method for optimal automatic control of shading device and evaluate its effectiveness by energy analysis of several shading devices.

  • The aims of this research are investigating and analysing background, enforcement situation, distinct features and current status of green schools which have been conducted by the government targeting decrepit schools. Based on this investigation and analysis the solution for vitalizing green schools will be sought because green schools are more effective in reducing energy and greenhouse gas and they are more appropriate methods for schools. With internal and external literature reviews the concept and background of overseas green school policies and their similarities and differences are analyzed. Based on the investigation into current status of green schools in Korea and eco-schools and super eco-schools in Japan which are benchmarking objects of green schools project in Korea the problems and outcomes of green schools in Korea are diagnosed. By analyzing cases of eco-schools and super eco-schools in Japan implications for introducing to Korea are considered. Based on the aforementioned researches this study suggests the improvement plan for vitalizing green schools project and similar projects.

Agent-Based Modeling and Design of Water Reuse Network in Eco-Industrial Park (EIP) (생태산업단지에서 용수재이용 네트워크의 에이전트 기반 모델링 및 설계)

  • To achieve zero-emission, one of the main goals of an eco-industrial park (EIP), it is needed to develop an effective water exchange network. The network includes various subsystems and decision making processes, which make the modeling process extremely complicated. Agent-based modeling was used to simulate water exchange network in an EIP. Firm agents were created based on the behavior pattern of firms, and an agent-based model (ABM) was made with the agents, showing the growth of the exchange network. An existing steel and iron making industrial park was chosen as a case study, and the ABM model shows eco-efficient behavior with a decreased environmental cost. Water reuse network based on the ABM model results in 35% decrease of the fresh water supply and 50% reduction of the wastewater generation in EIP. A case study shows that agent-based model can be a powerful tool in modeling and designing complex eco-industrial parks, especially when a part of the system needs to be changed.
