  • The Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) has been developing a next-generation coronagraph (NGC) in cooperation with NASA to measure the coronal electron density, temperature, and speed simultaneously, using four different optical filters around 400 nm. KASI organized an expedition to demonstrate the coronagraph measurement scheme and the instrumental technology during the 2017 total solar eclipse (TSE) across the USA. The observation site was in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, USA. We built an eclipse observation system, the Diagnostic Coronal Experiment (DICE), composed of two identical telescopes to improve the signal-to-noise ratio. The observation was conducted at four wavelengths and three linear polarization directions in the limited total eclipse time of about 140 seconds. We successfully obtained polarization data for the corona but we were not able to obtain information on the coronal electron temperature and speed due to the low signal-to-noise ratio of the optical system and strong emission from prominences located at the western limb. In this study, we report the development of DICE and the observation results from the eclipse expedition. TSE observation and analysis with our self-developed instrument showed that a coronagraph needs to be designed carefully to achieve its scientific purpose. We gained valuable experience for future follow-up NASA-KASI joint missions: the Balloon-borne Investigation of the Temperature and Speed of Electrons in the Corona (BITSE) and the COronal Diagnostic EXperiment (CODEX).

  • In this study, solar eclipse records were investigated during the Three Kingdoms era of ancient Korea using astronomical calculations and numerical simulations. Under the condition that the solar eclipses were actually observed at the well known capitals of the Three Kingdoms, I investigated the probabilities that the optimal observation areas of the Early Silla, Goguryeo, and Baekje records would appear around Chinese continent. I found higher probabilities than those suggested by Park and La (1994), although the numerical values are still low, especially in the case of the Early Silla records. On the other hand, the probability that the optimal observation area of the Later Silla records will be present around South Korea is only 13.6%, although the area shows a good match with the known capital. I also analyzed the number distribution of the eclipse records for the Three Kingdoms (except for the latter Silla's) according to the observers' locations: at the optimal observation areas and at the known capitals. And then I compared with the number distribution of all eclipses observable from those locations. From the $\chi^2$-test, I found that the Goguryeo and Baekje records had better representation of their population distributions at the latter regions ($\chi^2$=27.93 and 205.5) than at the former ones ($\chi^2$=34.19 and 211.5). Therefore, it is difficult to conclude that the observers' locations during the Three Kingdoms period were either near China, as suggested by Park and La, or in the Korean peninsula, solely based on these results. It is thus recommended that more studies are required to confirm the real observers' locations during the Three Kingdoms era.

  • PURPOSE. The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the flexural properties of a recently introduced urethane dimethacrylate denture base material (Eclipse) after being repaired with two different materials. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Two repair groups and a control group consisting of 10 specimens each were generated. The ES group was repaired with auto-polymerizing polymer. The EE group was repaired with the Eclipse. The E group was left intact as a control group. A 3-point bending test device which was set to travel at a crosshead speed of 5 mm/min was used. Specimens were loaded until fracture occurred and the mean displacement, maximum load, flexural modulus and flexural strength values and standard deviations were calculated for each group and the data were statistically analyzed. The results were assessed at a significance level of P<.05. RESULTS. The mean "displacement", "maximum load before fracture", flexural strength" and "flexural modulus" rates of Group E were statistically significant higher than those of Groups ES and EE, but no significant difference (P>.05) was found between the mean values of Group ES and EE. There was a statistically significant positive relation (P<.01) between the displacement and maximum load of Group ES (99.5%), Group EE (94.3%) and Group E (84.4%). CONCLUSION. The more economic and commonly used self-curing acrylic resin can be recommended as an alternative repair material for Eclipse denture bases.

  • Attitude determination of satellite is categorized by deterministic and recursive method. The recursive algorithm using Kalman filter is widely used. Cubesat has limitation for payload to minimize then only two attitude sensors are installed which are sun sensor and magnetometer. Sun sensor measurements are useless during eclipse, however cubesat keeps estimating attitude to complete the successful mission. In this paper, Attitude determination algorithm based on Kalman filter is developed by additional term which considering the dynamics for SNUSAT-1 with disturbance torque. Verification of attitude accuracy of the algorithm is conducted during eclipse. Attitude determination algorithm is simulated to compare the performance between typical method and proposed algorithm. In addition, Attitude errors are analysed with various magnitude of disturbance torque caused by space environment.

  • Compiler development projects, which are designed and taught in compiler course, allow students to practice and absorb valuable amount of experience and techniques in developing compilers. However, both instructors and students face difficulties as they are often limited by insufficient hands-on time during course of an academic year along with a relatively high level of technologies involved when dealing with compilers. As well, most compiler's target systems use interpreter-based technologies which are rather limited in drawing student's attention. As a result compiler courses often end up being more of a theoretical course than practical. This paper presents a new integrated development environment (IDE) that will help overcome aforementioned difficulties and allow students to obtain both theoretical and practical knowledge more efficiently. The development environment includes a reference compiler with $Mindstorms^{(R)}$ NXT Robots as the target system, compiler development tool, target language test tool, and code generation visualizer. It is developed as a plug-in for the popular Eclipse IDE which enables easy access and great expandability. This integrated development environment allows students to understand compilers better and start their development faster.

  • Eclipse Scripting Application Programming Interface (ESAPI) was devised to enhance the efficiency in such treatment related workflows as contouring, treatment planning, plan quality measure, and data-mining by communicating with the treatment planning system (TPS). It is provided in the form of C# programming based toolbox, which could be modified to fit into the clinical applications. The Scripting program, however, does not offer all potential functionalities that the users intend to develop. The shortcomings can be overcome by combining the Scripting programming with user-executable program on Windows or Linux. The executed program has greater freedom in implementation, which could strengthen the ability and availability of the Scripting on the clinical applications. This work shows the use of the Scripting programming throughout the simple modification of the given toolbox. Besides, it presents the implementation of combining both Scripting and user-executed programming based on MATLAB, applied to automated dynamic MLC wedge and FIF treatment planning procedure for promoting the planning efficiency.

  • The Korea Muliti-Purpose Satellite(KOMPSAT) uses a sun-synchronous orbit with an altitude 685km as mission orbit and undergoes earth eclipses and infrequently lunar eclipses. Lunar eclipses occur when the moon is located between the sun and the satellite and blocks partially or fully the sunlight. The eclipse causes the satellite to increase battery discharge times and affects satellite lifetime and mission operation. The KOMPSAT lunar eclipses can cause additional effects to energy balance and battery disc of the KOMPSAT lunar eclipse for 3 year mission lifetime. Also mission planning scenario is presented for lunar eclipses at the KOMPSAT Grouns Station(KGS).

  • The UBV observations of Epsilon Aurigae from April 1982 to May 1985 had been made at Yonsei University Observatory. The light curves drawn from the observational data are combined with other light curves which are well fitted. In these light curves, secondary light variations, flare activity, mid-eclipse light brightening, and others are checked precisely. Contact times and time of mid-eclipse are determined and compared with the values which were presented on the other papers. Compared with previous eclipses, it is noted that the duration of totality is gradually contracted and the duration of total eclipse is gradually enlarged. Though these phenomena are applied to the disk model which has been more accepted than any other models, those are not explained explicitly. So, a new model, comet model, is suggested and is found to make a neat description to the phenomena revealed on the light curves.
