This study is about Cho Heon-yeong's 『Eastern Medicine Series (東洋醫學叢書)』. It consists of 5 clinical books, 『Therapy for People (民衆醫術理療法)』, 『Tuberculosis Eastern Medical Treatment (肺病漢方治療法)』, 『Neurasthenia Treatment (神經衰弱症治療法)』, 『Gastrointestinal Disease Treatment (胃腸病治療法)』 and 『Gynecological Treatment (婦人病治療法)』, which were published between 1935-1941. This series mainly succeeded 『Donguibogam (東醫寶鑑)』, and was influenced by 『Kyeongakjeonseo (景岳全書)』, and 『Hwangjenegyeong (黃帝內經)』. Cho Heon-yeong's medical philosophy appears in two ways. First, he emphasized invigoration in treatment for the people who lacked nutrition and medical care at the time. Second, eclecticism of Korean Medicine and Western medicine is specifically revealed through this series. He aimed for a comprehensive medicine that consists mainly of Korean medicine and includes only a part of Western medicine.

In this study, we examine Cho Heon-yeong's medical theory about neurasthenia by looking at the contents and prescriptions of 『Neurasthenia Treatment (神經衰弱症治療法)』. Discourse about neurasthenia caused many problems in Joseon society during Japanese colonial period. This book consists of fist volume about general summary, second volume about treatment and prescription list. Cho Heon-yeong's theory in this book has following characteristics. First, eclecticism of Korean Medicine and Western medicine appears in the reinterpretation of Western medicine diseases and the acceptance of some Western medical theories and treatments. Second, the Korean medical disease name of neurasthenia is 'Simgizeung (心氣證)' for relevance with seven emotions (七情) and mind (神). Third, he evaluates neurasthenia as not a dangerous and incurable disease, but rather a positive phenomena of the mind and body. Fourth, he treated neurastenia by compromising dispersion (解鬱) and invigoration (補虛).

In this study, we examine Cho Heon-yeong's medical theory in obstetrics and gynecology by looking at the contents and prescriptions of 『Buinbyeongchiryobeob (婦人病治療法)』. This book is a clinical text on obstetrics and gynecology written in the 1940's. This book consists of an Introduction, Jeungchi (證治), Yangjinhanchi (洋診漢治), Cheobangnonhae (處方論解) and refers to 『Donguibogam(東醫寶鑑)』, 『Keongakjeonseo (景岳全書)』, 『Junguihaksajeon (中醫學辭典)』, 『Jejungsinpyeon (濟衆新編)』, 『Uihakipmun (醫學入門)』 and 『UijongKeumkam (醫宗金鑑)』. Cho Heon-yeong's theory in this book has the following characteristics. First, his medical eclecticism is centered on Korean Medicine, with incidental use of Western medicine. Second, he regarded weakness (虛證) as a vital factor in obstetrics and gynecology. Third, he added "mental state" to the list of basic physiological characteristics of women. Fourth, he presented a new diagnostic standard based on a spectrum of fire (火) and cold (冷). There are 363 prescriptions in this book, and 171 of them are from 『Donguibogam (東醫寶鑑)』. The books frequently used prescriptions are all designed to supplement (補藥). There are 48 prescriptions that original to Cho Heon-yeong. Additionally, this book contains eopsaeng (攝生) and pretended stimulation therapies and exercise methods.
