Planar Waveguide Devices for Communication and Sensing Applications

  • The paper reviews progress and future prospects of two kinds of planar waveguide devices; they are (a) silica and silicon photonics multi/demultiplexers for communications and signal processing applications, and (b) a novel waveguide spectrometer based on Fourier transform spectroscopy for sensing applications.

  • Cassegrain interface module (CIM) of the fiber-fed high resolution echelle spectrograph has been designed and manufactured for the 1.8 m reflector at the Bohynsan Optical Astronomy Observatory. We also constructed a long slit spectrograph attached to this CIM, which would replace the earlier rather inefficient medium dispersion spectrometer. We present detailed description for design and manufacturing concepts of the CIM which consists of a slit assembly, slit monitoring system, calibration lamp system and a long slit spectrograph, in order to provide how the overall system and each part. are constructed. The preliminary performance test carried out so far seems to indicate a successful result.

  • The emission line objects such as planetary nebulae, symbiotics, gaseous nebulae, HII regions, novae, supernovae, SNRs, nearby spiral galaxies, dIrr, dE, and nearby active galactic nuclei, would be goldmines for us to dig with the 1.8m bohyunsan optical (BOAO) telescope. We discussed the importance of strategically important diagnostic lines and atomic constant calculation for a study of Galactic and extragalactic emission objects. The scientific background on a spectrometer development history is briefly presented and spectroscopic research areas other than the emission objects are also summarized.

Research on the Technology of Alternative Continuous Wide Spectral Spatial Heterodyne Spectrometer

  • An innovative system for the alternative continuous wide spectral spatial heterodyne spectrometer (ACWS-SHS) is proposed. The relationship between the ACWS-SHS and the wide spectral spatial heterodyne spectrometer (WS-SHS) at the resolution limit, the spectral range, the grating diffraction efficiency and the interference fringes contrast ratio has been analyzed theoretically. Through the comparison of the theoretical analysis and simulation results, it is found that the two systems for the WS-SHS and the ACWS-SHS have the same resolution limit and spectral range, which are ${\delta}{\sigma}$ and ${\sigma}_{01}$, while in the ACWS-SHS system the critical diffraction efficiency of echelle grating is 68.39% and the critical contrast ratio of interference fringes is 0.4135, which is much better than the performance of the WS-SHS system. Therefore, the ACWS-SHS reduces the high requirements for the precision of equipment and expands the application field of SHS effectively.

HIGH RESOLUTION NEAR-INFRARED SPECTRA OF NEARBY QUASAR, PG1426+015

  • We observed low-z quasar PG1426+015 (z=0.086), using the near-IR high resolution echelle spectrometer, IRCS, at the SUBARU 8.2 m telescope. Using an Adoptive Optics system, the full width at half maximum of the point spread function was about 0.3 arcsec, which can effectively separate the quasar spectra from the host galaxy spectra. We also maximize the total exposure time up to several hours per target, and develop data reduction methods to increase the signal-to-noise ratios. This poster presents the data reduction processes and sample spectra from the quasar and its host galaxy. These spectral lines will be used to study the physical mechanism of quasars, and the velocity dispersions of the stars in the bugle of the host galaxy.

Near-Infrared Spectra of Super Star Clusters in M82

  • We observed selected super cluster regions in M82 with 5'5 arcsec field-of-view using near-IR high resolution echelle spectrometer, IRCS, at the SUBARU 8.2 m telescope. The slit width of 0.15 arcsec makes the high resolution (R ${\approx}$ 20,000) spectra in the H and K bands. In this poster, we present sample spectra of [FeII] lines and ro-vibration lines of $H_2$ which trace ionic shocks in the intercloud regions and molecular shocks. The line widths of $Br{\gamma}$ line are also measured to derive the velocity dispersion within the super star clusters.

타이탄의 고분산 스펙트럼 (HIGH RESOLUTION SPECTROSCOPY OF TITAN)

  • We have carried out the high-resolution spectroscopic observations of Titan using BOES (Bohyunsan Echelle Spectrometer) to establish a standard spectral atlas of Titan. The observations were made on November 3, 4, 16 and 17, 2003 using a 300 11m fiber optics with a spectral resolving power of 30,000. The spectral atlas will be served as a reference for the future spectroscopic researches of Titan and other planetary objects. We were able to confirm $CH_4$ absorption lines of the Kuiper bands, and find unidentified lines near $7500{\AA}$.

MEDIUM RESOLUTION SPECTRAL LIBRARY OF LATE-TYPE STELLAR TEMPLATES IN NEAR-INFRARED BAND

  • We present medium resolution spectra in the near-infrared (IR) band 1.4-1.8 microns at a resolving power of R = 5000-10000 of template stars in G, K, and M types with luminosity classes of III observed by the echelle spectrometer, IRCS, at the SUBARU 8.2 m telescope. Identification of lines in the template star spectra has been completed base on the reference of Arcturus spectrum. We measured equivalent width (EW) of the lines, and analyze the trends of EW through the stellar spectral types.

  • 이차 추진제로 많이 쓰이는 알루미늄을 고출력 레이저를 이용하여 공기 중의 산소와 반응시켜 발생되는 rich 및 stoichiometric 상태의 알루미늄-산소 연소 현상에 대해 레이저 분광분석법을 이용하여 연구하였다. 7ns의 펄스 주기와 1064nm의 주파수를 가진 Q-switched Nd:YAG 레이저로 40 - 2500mJ의 에너지가 공급되었으며, 플라즈마 빛은 echelle 회절 분광기와 ICCD 카메라로 감지하였다. 레이저 분광분석을 통하여 연료인 알루미늄과 산화제인 산소의 원자 신호를 얻었을 뿐만 아니라, 현상이 일어나는 환경인 플라즈마 온도와 전자밀도가 계산되었다. 특정 전자 밀도비 비교를 통하여, 고출력 레이저를 통해 일어나는 알루미늄과 산소의 연소 및 폭발 현상 변화에 대한 분석이 가능하다는 것에 본 논문의 중요성이 있다.

  • 이차 추진제로 많이 쓰이는 알루미늄을 고출력 레이저를 조사하여 공기 중의 산소와 반응시켜 발생되는 알루미늄과 산소의 화학 반응을 레이저 분광분석법을 이용하여 연구를 수행 하였다. 7ns의 펄스 주기와 1064nm의 주파수를 가진 Q-switched Nd:YAG 레이저로 40 - 2500mJ($6.88{\times}10^{10}-6.53{\times}10^{11}W/cm^2$)의 에너지가 공급되었으며, 플라즈마 빛은 echelle 회절 분광기와 ICCD 카메라로 감지하였다. 분광분석을 통하여 알루미늄과 산소의 원자/분자 신호 분석과 현상이 일어나는 플라즈마 환경의 특성 연구를 위해 들뜸 온도(2200K~6600K) 및 전자밀도($3.15{\times}10^{15}{\sim}2.38{\times}10^{16}cm^{-3}$) 계산, 그리고 알루미늄 표면의 크레이터(Crater) 분석을 수행하였다. 본 연구는 고 레이저 복사 조도 환경하에서 발생되는 화학 반응과 플라즈마의 특성을 파악하는 방법을 제시하고 있다.
