Recent advances in automation and robotic technologies in the manufacturing industry suggest that the greater level of automation may be extremely beneficial for the construction industry. However, only some of the high-technology advances may be applied to the construction industry due to the fast-changing construction environment in which work locations are constantly changing and material, equipment, and workers are always moving. The earthwork operation for site development is a good candidate for applying automation technology, because it is a very repetitive and tedious task and needs lots of construction equipment. This paper presents the model of a construction environment and a moving plan for an automated earthwork system, which can produce an effective moving path of an excavator platform with an Octree model. To generate the moving path, the know-how of skilled operators and construction managers is added in the proposed model.

In order to cope with the decrease of construction manpower caused by the aging population and to improve construction productivity, Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has been promoting construction methodology using ICT (Information & Communication Technology) since 2016. The ministry has established and implemented new cost estimation standards, delivery systems, and government support policies to boost automated earthwork using ICT, and is expanding the types of automated construction methodology applied at the construction sites. To utilize ICT at construction sites in Korea, as in case of Japan, laws, systems, and policies should be readjusted first. By comparing the ICT-related systems and policies between Japan and Korea, this paper scrutinizes critical benchmarking factors. As a result, we have reached the conclusion that in order to promote ICT methodology at Korean construction sites, Korean government should establish ICT-related cost estimation standards, delivery systems, and economic support policies in advance.
To reduce the bump of bridge/earthwork transition area caused by the settlement of the soft ground during public use, the road agencies have been continuously overlay or repavement at those areas. In this study, the vehicle-mounted ground penetrating radar with 1GHz air-coupled antenna was used to estimate the settlement amount of those areas for nine bridges built in the soft ground. Results shows that it is possible to effectively measure the thickness of pavement up to a depth of 1 m on an asphalt road with ground penetrating radar technology that can inspect under the road surface. Distinctively deformation of the road surface, the variation in the thickness of the pavement measured at bridge/earth transition areas is equivalent to a minimum of 50 mm and a maximum of 600 mm, and there is a risk of cavity in the ground. The difference in the increased pavement thickness is 50~250 mm for each bridge connection, which may cause the differential settlement. In this study, by using the result of the ground penetration radar, a plan for improving drivability and maintenance of the settlement is suggested and applied to the field.

Recent decrease in the availability of experienced skilled labor and a corresponding lack of new entrants has required the need for automating many of the construction equipment used in the construction industry. In particular, excavators are widely used throughout earthwork operations and automating its tasks enables work to be performed with higher productivity and safety. This paper introduces an optimal path generation method which is one of the core technologies required to make "Intelligent" excavators a reality. The method divides a given earthwork area into unit cells, identifies networks created by linking these cells, and identifies the optimal path an excavator should follow to minimize its total transportation costs. In addition, the method also accounts for drainage direction and path continuity to ensure that the generated path considers site specific conditions.
A user - oriented computer model to aid designing forest road is developed to release the burden by increasing efficiency of time - consuming and laborious road design works. In this paper, the structures and functions of the model are discussed. The model consists of functional modules : 1)input module to treat survey data and design criteria ; 2)road design module to generate preliminary road layout, horizontal and vertical curvatures and curve widening ; 3)earthwork analysis module to determine the economic mass movement ; 4)report writer module to produce hard copies of engineering drawings for plan views, cross - sections and profiles, earthwork calculation sheets and mass movement diagrams. In addition, the report writer also provides the information on earthwork disturbance along the cut and - fill slopes. The modules are designed to be fully - integrated to enable the users to perform engineering analyses and evaluate design alternatives in a series of road - design procedures.
The transition zone between an earthwork and a bridge effect to the vehicle's running stability because support stiffness of the roadbed is suddenly changed. The design criteria for the transition structure on ballast track were not particular in the past. However with the introduction of concrete track is introduced, it requires there is a higher performance level required because of maintenance and running stability. In this present paper, a transition structure reinforced with geosynthetics is suggested to improve the performance of existing bridge-earthwork transition structures. The suggested transition structure, in which there is reinforcing of the approach block using high-tension geosynthetics, has a structure similar to that of earth reinforced abutments. The utilized backfill materials are cement treated soil and gravel. These materials are used to reduce water intrusion into the approach block and to increase the recycling of surplus earth materials. An experiment was performed under the same conditions in order to allow a comparison of this new structure with the existing transition structure. Evaluation items are elastic displacement, cumulative settlement, and earth pressure. As for the results of the real-scale accelerated testing, the suggested transition structure has excellent performance for the reduction of earth pressure and settlement. Above all, it has high resistance the variation of the water content.

In the construction industry, attempts to evaluate the environmental impact of products through life cycle assessment (LCA) approach has been on the rise. However, the domestic construction industry needs to make rapid decisions due to limited budget and schedule, so it is difficult to carry out a review of the environmental load on all resources. The decision-making process requires information on the major influence factors that should be focused on to reduce environmental load. And this information should be quantified so that it can be linked to environmental impact assessment. In this study, the LCA results of road construction cases were analyzed to provide such information. As a result, diesel, ready-mixed concrete, urethane-based paint, aggregate, and asphalt concrete were found to be the main factors that generated 93.17% of the environmental load in the earthwork type of road project. The total environmental cost caused by these affecting factors when constructing 1 km of earthwork type of road project is 242 million won. The analysis also shows that a 10% reduction in the amount of ready-mixed and asphalt concretes can reduce carbon emissions by 5.02% and 2.28% while reducing environmental costs by 11 million won per kilometer. In order to reduce carbon emissions of the earthwork type of road project, it is necessary to actively develop and introduce new methods and eco-friendly materials to reduce the overall use of ready-mixed concrete and asphalt concrete.
Open-pit mine development requires continuous management because of topographical changes and there is a risk of accidents if the current status survey is performed directly in the process of calculating the earthwork. In this study, the application of UAV photogrammetry, which can acquire spatial information without direct human access, was applied to open-pit mines development area and analyzed the accuracy, earthwork, and mountain restoration plan to determine its applicability. As a result of accuracy analysis at checkpoint using ortho image and Digital Surface Model(DSM) by UAV photogrammetry, Root Mean Square Error(RMSE) is 0.120 m in horizontal and 0.150 m in vertical coordinates. This satisfied the tolerance range of 1:1,000 digital map. As a result of the comparison of the earthwork, UAV photogrammetry yielded 11.7% more earthwork than the conventional survey method. It is because UAV photogrammetry shows more detailed topography. And result of monitoring mountain restoration showed possible to determine existence of rockfall prevention nets and vegetation. If the terrain changes are monitored by acquiring images periodically, the utility of UAV photogrammetry will be further useful to open-pit mine development.
In this paper, intelligent compaction (IC) technology and the earthwork quality control specifications based on IC were analyzed, and the field study was conducted to investigate the relationship between the representative IC value CMV (Compaction Meter Value) and spot test results (plate bearing test and field density test). As the number of roller passes increased, both the CMV and spot test results increased. However, point-by-point comparison between CMV and spot test results yielded poor quality correlations; this is because the ununiform stiffness of the underlying layer and the moisture content of the lift layer affected the CMV and spot test results, respectively. Most international specifications related to IC requires knowledge of the IC values and their relationships with the soil properties obtained by the traditional spot tests. Therefore, for the successful implementation of intelligent compaction technology into earthwork construction practice, the number of roller passes as well as the lift thickness and the moisture content of the soil should be carefully considered.

Calculation of quantity at construction sites is a factor that has a great influence on construction costs, and it is important to calculate accurate values. In this study, topographic model was created by using drone photogrammetry and drone LiDAR to estimate earthwork volume. ortho image and DSM (Digital Surface Model) were constructed for the study area by drone photogrammetry, and DEM (Digital Elevation Model) of the target area was established using drone LiDAR. And through accuracy evaluation, accuracy of each method are 0.034m, 0.35m in horizontal direction, 0.054m, 0.25m in vertical direction. Through the research, the usability of drone photogrammetry and drone LiDAR for constructing geospatial information was presented. As a result of calculating the volume of the study site, the UAV photogrammetry showed a difference of 1528.1㎥ from the GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) survey performance, and the 3D Laser Scanner showed difference of 160.28㎥. The difference in the volume of earthwork is due to the difference in the topographic model, and the efficiency of volume calculation by drone LiDAR could be suggested. In the future, if additional research is conducted using GNSS surveying and drone LiDAR to establish topographic model in the forest area and evaluate its usability, the efficiency of terrain model construction using drone LiDAR can be suggested.
