Interferometric Monitor for Greenhouse Gases (IMG) is a sensor to monitor the earth's radiation balance, the temperature profile of the atmosphere, the temperature of the earth's surface, and physical properties of clouds, and was loaded on ADEOS satellite. In this paper, we estimated IMG level 2 data by comparing with a Clobal Telecommunications System data (GTS). The IMG level 2 data over sea without cloud cover gave good agreement with the value that had been obtained by buoy and sonde.
A radar scattering model is developed based on an empirical rough surface scattering model, the radiative transfer model (RTM), a numerical simulation algorithm of radar scattering from particles, and experimental data obtained by ground-based scatterometers and SAR systems. At first, the scattering matrices of scattering particles such as a leaf, a branch, and a trunk, have been modeled using the physical optics (PO) model and the numerical full-wave analysis. Then, radar scattering from a group of mixed particles has been modeled using the RTM, which leads to a general scattering model for earth surfaces. Finally, the scattering model has been verified with the experimental data obtained by scatterometers and SAR systems.
Rapid development of geophysical exploration and hydrogeologic monitoring techniques has yielded remarkable increase of datasets related to groundwater systems. Increased number of datasets contribute to understanding of general aquifer characteristics such as groundwater yield and flow, but understanding of complex heterogenous aquifers system is still a challenging task. Recently, applications of data science technique have become popular in the fields of geophysical explorations and monitoring, and such attempts are also extended in the groundwater field. This work reviewed current status and advancement in utilization of data science in groundwater field. The application of data science techniques facilitates effective and realistic analyses of aquifer system, and allows accurate prediction of aquifer system change in response to extreme climate events. Due to such benefits, data science techniques have become an effective tool to establish more sustainable groundwater management systems. It is expected that the techniques will further strengthen the theoretical framework in groundwater management to cope with upcoming challenges and limitations.
We have studied the central parts of M82, which is a well-known infrared luminous, starburst galaxy, by analyzing archival data from the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). M82 was observed at 11 positions covering $\pm$45" from the center along the major axis. We analyzed 4 emission lines, [ArIII] 8.99 ${\mu}m$, $H_2$ 17.034 ${\mu}m$, [FeII] 25,98 ${\mu}m$, and [SiII] 34,815 ${\mu}m$ from $SWSO_2$ data. The integrated flux distributions of these lines are quite different. The $H_2$ line shows symmetric twin peaks at $\~$18" from the center, which is a general characteristic of molecular lines in starburst or barred galaxies. This line appears to be associated with the rotating molecular ring at around $\~$200 pc just outside the inner spiral arm. The relative depletion of the $H_2$ line at the center may be due to the active star formation activity which dissociates the $H_2$ molecules. The other lines have peaks at the center and the distributions are nearly symmetric. The line profiles are deconvolved assuming that both intrinsic and instrumental profiles are Gaussian. The velocity dispersion outside the core is found to be $\~50 km s^{-1}$. The central velocity dispersion is much higher than $50 km s^{-1}$, and different lines give different values. The large central velocity dispersion ($\sigma$) is mostly due to the rotation, but there is also evidence for a high $\sigma$ for [ArIII] line. We also generated position-velocity maps for these four lines. We found very diverse features from these maps.
Four observational astronomical item, have been pilottested with a 150mm refracting telescope in order to layout the detailed procedures for the suggested (inquiry) activities listed in the high school earth science curriculum and to contrive some adequate instructions for students stressed on how to make proper treatments with the collected materials. The tested items were of sunspots' motion, the size of lunar craters, the Galilian satellites' revolution, and the galactic distribution of stars. Following series of activities are suggested with respect to the way of collecting observational data and of giving proper instruction to students in class: 1) Photography and other material, he made by teacher and/or extracurricular group of students; 2) Replicas (xeroxed, photographs, Or slides) he made from the collected materials, '0 that they are available to all the students in class; 3) Quantative analyses, be taken as student' activity.
The purpose of this study was to explore the nine components of computational thinking (CT) practices and their operational definitions from the view of science education and to develop a CT practice framework that is going to be used as a planning and assessing tool for CT practice, as it is required for students to equip with in order to become creative problem solvers in $21^{st}$ century. We employed this framework into the earlier developed STEAM programs to see how it was valid and reliable. We first reviewed theoretical articles about CT from computer science and technology education field. We then proposed 9 components of CT as defined in technology education but modified operational definitions in each component from the perspective of science education. This preliminary CTPF (computational thinking practice framework) from the viewpoint of science education consisting of 9 components including data collection, data analysis, data representation, decomposing, abstraction, algorithm and procedures, automation, simulation, and parallelization. We discussed each component with operational definition to check if those components were useful in and applicable for science programs. We employed this CTPF into two different topics of STEAM programs to see if those components were observable with operational definitions. The profile of CT components within the selected STEAM programs for this study showed one sequential spectrum covering from data collection to simulation as the grade level went higher. The first three data related CT components were dominating at elementary level, all components of CT except parallelization were found at middle school level, and finally more frequencies in every component of CT except parallelization were also found at high school level than middle school level. On the basis of the result of CT usage in STEAM programs, we included 'generalization' in CTPF of science education instead of 'parallelization' which was not found. The implication about teacher education was made based on the CTPF in terms of science education.
NASA launched Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) on February 2011 in order to understand the cause of solar activities and their influences on the Earth and the near-Earth space. KASI is constructing Korean Data Center for SDO based on the letter of agreement between KASI and NASA for space weather research. SDO produces about 1.5 TB a day and its raw data amounts to about 550 TB in a year. Stanford University has been already operating the data center for scientific raw data, but there is a limit to use its data for space weather research and space weather service in real time because of network environment. Korean Data Center for SDO will provide scientific data not only to Korean institutes but also to international space weather societies. KASI has designed the data transfer system by using GLORIAD in order to get higher performance and stability. After the first construction of data transfer system and storage system in this year, we will increase the storage capacity of the data center in phases considering new developments in a storage technology and drop of their prices.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristic changes of the Changma season in the 2000s. To accomplish this goal, we have used daily rainfall data collected over nearly 40 years (1971 to 2010). The average summer precipitation data including the Changma season were collected from 16 weather stations that are placed across the three major regions (i.e. central region, southern region, and Jeju region) as Korea Meteorological Administration divided. These precipitation data were analyzed to find out characteristic changes of the Changma season. Results of the precipitation data comparison among the major regions that, monthly average precipitation in the central region was the highest in July; its precipitation tended to increase from May to September. In the southern region, the precipitation amount was lowest in June and tended to increase in May, September, and August. In the Jeju region, the precipitation has been the highest in June and July for the past 30 years, whereas September has been highest month in the last 10 years. The precipitation amount in the Jeju region decreased both in June and July, whereas it tended to grow in May, August and September. A correlation coefficient formula by Karl Pearson has been used to find out correlations between the Changma season and the precipitation of the major regions in 2000s and normal years. It was found that the correlation coefficient has decreased from 0.723 to 0.524 in the 2000s (2001 to 2010) compared to normal years (1971 to 2000).
Results from the Earth Radiation Budget Experiment (ERBE) will help interpret the data from the operational satellite system. However, a major problem exists because a follow-on experiment to ERBE is not planned until the late 1990`s. Meanwhile, it will be necessary to provide OLR estimates from the operational satellite system. Since 1973the outgoing long wave radiation(OLR) data have been obtained by the 10#m window radiance(AVHRR) estimation technique from he observation NOAA operational satellites. However, those data have not been universall if accepted because they are estimated from the radiance in but one narrow spectral regiou. However , this type of technique has not been exploited for use with data from the ]fIRS multispectral radiometer. Since the radiance data measured by HIRS contains more: information on atmospheric variables than the AVHRR, it is a potentially better instrument for operational estimates of the OLR In this study, results from model are better flux estimates than the AVHRR, The technique is then tested by comparing simultalleous AVHRR and HIRS OLR estimations with a radiation model flux calculation froml homogeneous atmospheric scenes at the regions of desert and subtropic ocean.
