Optical characteristics of aerosols in Seoul are investigated from the measurements of sky radiance by Skyradiometer at Yonsei University from December 2005 to November 2006. Aerosol optical depth (AOD) shows a maximum in June due to weak ventilation and particle growth by aging process and hygroscopic effect. Single scattering albedo (SSA) and Angstrom Exponent (AE) show the lowest value in spring due to the Asian dust. It is clear that coarse mode is dominant in spring and fine mode is dominant in summer from the volume size distribution measured in this study. The explanations on the changes of aerosol loadings are provided through the correlation between AOD and AE, while the pattern of wavelength dependency related to particle size is shown through the correlation between SSA and AE. Backward trajectory analysis by HYSPLIT provides information about origin of aerosol, which allows us to classify the case according to the source region and the path distance. Although the direction of backward trajectory traces back mostly to west, coarse mode particle is dominant in the case of long pathway and fine mode particle is dominant in the case of short pathway. This discrepancy is caused by the regional difference of emitted particles.
The vertical profiles and optical properties of Asian dust are investigated using ground-based measurements from 1998 to 2002. Vertical profiles of aerosol extinction coefficient are evaluated using MPL (Micro Pulse Lidar) data. Optical parameters such as aerosol optical thickness ($\tau$), ${\AA}ngstr\ddot{o}m$ exponent ($\alpha$), single scattering albedo ($\omega$), refractive index, and volume size distribution are analyzed with sun/sky radiometer data for the same period. We can separate aerosol vertical profiles into three categories. First category named as 'Asian dust case', which aerosol extinction coefficient is larger than $0.15km^{-1}$ and dust layer exists from surface up to 3-4km. Second category named as 'Elevated aerosol case', which aerosol layer exists between 2 and 6km with 1-2.5km thickness, and extinction coefficient is smaller than $0.15km^{-1}$. Third category named as 'Clear sky case', which aerosol extinction coefficient appears smaller than $0.15km^{-1}$. and shows that diurnal variation of background aerosol in urban area. While optical parameters for first category indicate that $\tau$ and $\alpha$ are $0.63{\pm}0.14$, $0.48{\pm}0.19$, respectively. Also, aerosol volume concentration is increased for range of 1 and $4{\mu}m$, in coarse mode. Optical parameters for second category can be separated into two different types. Optical properties of first type are very close to Asian dust cases. Also, dust reports of source region and backward trajectory analyses assure that these type is much related with Asian dust event. However, optical properties of the other type are similar to those of urban aerosol. For clear sky case, $\tau$ is relatively smaller and $\alpha$ is larger compare with other cases. Each case shows distinct characteristics in aerosol optical parameters.
The Albedo MONitor and RAdiometer (AMON-RA) instrument system is designed to measure Earth global albedo anomaly over the wavelength range of 0.3um to 4um. The instrument consists of two interconnecting optical subsystems i.e. a visible channel and an energy channel. The energy channel instrument consists of a modified Winston cone, a couple of relay mirrors and a pyro-electric detector. First, we report the integration and alignment process, leading to the prototype bolometer instrument. We then discuss the radiometric performance characterization including laboratory measurement results and the future plan for further incorporation of the bolometer instrument into the prototype AMON-RA instrument.
The Amon-Ra instrument is the main optical payload of the proposed EARTHSHINE satellite. It consists of a visible wavelength instrument and an IR energy channel instrument to measure a global Earth albedo. We report a new sensitivity technique for efficient alignment of the visible channel instrument. Whilst the sensitivity table method has been widely used in the alignment process, the straightforward application of the method tends to produce slow process convergence because of shop floor alignment practice uncertainties. We investigated the error sources commonly associated with alignment practices and used them when estimating the Zernike polynomial coefficients. Aided with single center field wavefront error (WFE) measurements and their corresponding Zernike polynomial coefficients, the method involves the construction and use of an experimental, instead of simulated, sensitivity table to be used for alignment state estimations. A trial alignment experiment for the Amon Ra optical system was performed and the results show that 71.28 nm in rms WFE was achieved only after two alignment iterations. This tends to demonstrate its superior performance to the conventional method.
As of early 2015, more than 12,000 Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) have been catalogued by the Minor Planet Center, however their observational properties such as broadband colors and rotational periods are known only for a small fraction of the population. Thanks to time series observations with the KMTNet, orbits, optical sizes (and albedo), spin states and three dimensional shapes of asteroids and comets including NEOs will be systematically investigated and archived for the first time. Based on SDSS and BVRI colors, their approximate surface mineralogy will also be characterized. This so-called DEEP-South (Deep Ecliptic Patrol of the Southern Sky) project will provide a prompt solution to the demand from the scientific community to bridge the gaps in global sky coverage with a coordinated use of the network of ground-based telescopes in the southern hemisphere. We will soon finish implementing dedicated software subsystem consisted of automated observation scheduler and data pipeline for the sake of increased discovery rate, rapid follow-up, timely phase coverage, and efficient data analysis. We will give a brief introduction to test runs conducted at CTIO with the first KMTNet telescope in February and March 2015 and experimental data processing. Preliminary scientific results will also be presented.
Does snow depth initialization have a quantitative impact on sub-seasonal to seasonal prediction skill? To answer this question, a snow depth initialization technique for seasonal forecast system has been implemented and the impact of the initialization on the seasonal forecast of surface air temperature during the wintertime is examined. Since the snow depth observation can not be directly used in the model simulation due to the large systematic bias and much smaller model variability, an anomaly rescaling method to the snow depth initialization is applied. Snow depth in the model is initialized by adding a rescaled snow depth observation anomaly to the model snow depth climatology. A suite of seasonal forecast is performed for each year in recent 12 years (1999-2010) with and without the snow depth initialization to evaluate the performance of the developed technique. The results show that the seasonal forecast of surface air temperature over East Asian region sensitively depends on the initial snow depth anomaly over the region. However, the sensitivity shows large differences for different timing of the initialization and forecast lead time. Especially, the snow depth anomaly initialized in the late winter (Mar. 1) is the most effective in modulating the surface air temperature anomaly after one month. The real predictability gained by the snow depth initialization is also examined from the comparison with observation. The gain of the real predictability is generally small except for the forecasting experiment in the early winter (Nov. 1), which shows some skillful forecasts. Implications of these results and future directions for further development are discussed.
The radiative convective equilibrium (RCE) temperature was calculated for the climate change study at King Sejong Station in West Antarctica. As a result of RCE model sensitivity test, the increases of surface albedo, solar zenith angle, and cloud optical thickness decrease surface temperature. On the other hand, the increases of carbon dioxide and cirrus cloud amount are caused by surface warming due to the greenhouse effect. According to the model calculation result, annual mean surface temperature shows a upward trend of 0.012oC/year during the period of 1958-2001. During the period of 1989∼2001, the trend of monthly mean surface temperature by model calculation is 0.01oC/month and the observation trend is 0.005oC/month.
