  • The Earth, along with its major components - land, atmosphere, and oceans, is at the core of the global environmental system. Changes in any component of the Earth thus strongly affect the global and regional environment. With the advent of the new century, many important decisions on agricultural, industrial, societal and political problems will depend upon the Earth's environment. Monitoring the Earth is thus important to capture any sign from the Earth which might be related to the environmental change. (omitted)

  • In order to classify the groundwater recharge characteristics in an urban area, a time series analysis of groundwater level data was performed. For this study, the daily groundwater level data from 35 monitoring wells were collected for 3 years (Fig. 1). The use of the cross-correlation function (CCF), one of the time series analysis, showed both the close relationship between rainfall and groundwater level change and the lag time (delay time) of groundwater level fluctuation after a rainfall event. Based on the result of CCF, monitored wells were classified into two major groups. Group I wells (n=10) showed a fast response of groundwater level change to rainfall event, with a delay time of maximum correlation between rainfall and groundwater level near 1 to 7 days. On the other hand, the delay time of 17-68 days was observed from Group II wells (n=25) (Fig. 1). The fast response in Group I wells is possibly caused by the change of hydraulic pressure of bedrock aquifer due to the rainfall recharge, rather than the direct response to rainfall recharge.

  • We classified wind sectors according to the wind features in South Korea. In order to get the information of wind speed and wind direction, we used and improved on the atmospheric numerical model. We made use of detailed topographical data such as terrain height data of an interval of 3 seconds and landuse data produced at ministry of environment, Republic of Korea. The result of simulated wind field was improved. We carried out the cluster analysis to classify the wind sectors using the K-means clustering. South Korea was classified as 8 wind sectors to the annual wind field.

  • In this study, solute breakthrough curves through the unsaturated zone were predicted using artificial neural network (ANN) by numerical tests and laboratory experiments. In the numerical tests, applicability of ANN model to prediction of breakthrough curves was evaluated using synthetic data generated by HYDRUS-2D. An appropriate strategy of ANN application and input data form were recommended. The ANN model was validated by laboratory experiments comparing with HYDRUS-2D simulations. The results show that the ANN model can be an effective method for forecasting solute breakthrough curves through the unsaturated zone when hydraulic data are available.

  • Even though a systematic sampling approach is very crucial in both the general and detailed investigation phases to produce the best conceptual site model for contaminated sites, the concept is not yet established in South Korea. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued the 'Strategic Sampling Approaches Technical guide' in 2018 to help environmental professionals choose which sampling approaches may be needed and most effective for given site conditions. The EPA guide broadly defines strategic sampling as the application of focused data collection across targeted areas of the conceptual site model (CSM) to provide the appropriate amount and type of information needed for decision-making. These strategic sampling approaches can prevent the essential data from missing, minimize the uncertainty of projects and secure the data which are necessary for the important site-decisions. Furthermore, these provide collaborative data sets through the life cycle phases of projects, which can generate more positive proofs on the site-decisions. The strategic sampling approaches can be divided by site conditions. This technical guide categorized it into eight conditions; High-resolution site characterization in unconsolidated environments, High-resolution site characterization in fractured sedimentary rock environments, Incremental sampling, Contaminant source definition, Passive groundwater sampling, Passive sampling for surface water and sediment, Groundwater to surface water interaction, and Vapor intrusion. This commentary paper introduces specific sampling methods based on site conditions when the strategic sampling approaches are applied.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate residential characters and consciousness about housing environment concerned with earth housing, and to suggest basic data reflectible on the planning of earth housing. Residential characters and consciousness are investigated with the people lived in forty seven earth housings located in nationwide scale through interviews and questionnaire. As a result, it is shown that a reason of health like sick house syndrome, residential environments such as ventilation and lighting, site environment such as neighbor and greenfield are very influential elements to the consciousness of inhabitants. Meanwhile, approximation of residential area, the connection with public facilities including medical service, educational and commercial conditions, additionally, preparation of disaster and crime prevention in a viewpoint of safety are pointed out as relatively weak ones. It means that earth housing is not systematically fixed as a residential site because it is personally progressed by small number of peoples having different reasons. For the improvement of systematic housing environment, development and proposition of various model are needed on earth housing and its site.

  • This study is aimed to apply basic data to planning earth building through analyzing characteristics of earth building. For doing it, we investigated a research paper in advanced countries(New zealand, Australia, etc.) that has been used for earth building standards for a long time, and then we corrected inadequate standards that would apply our earth building environment. As a result, we can devide earth characteristics into three parts that are materials, plan, and maintenance and repair. First, as material selection is very important factor, a general plan is possible to change in accordance with what material is selected. These methods that made mud brick, pressed earth block, rammed earth, cob have been well used during the current 30 years in earth building. Second, the plan is composed of site select and architecture plan. In architecture plan, we should consider from foundation to eaves protection, and in site selection, consider sides of the environment and the social. Third, we should always check a periodical inspection through watchful observation because earth buildings need more time and efforts in maintaining and repairing than others.

  • The impact of the detailed surface data on regional meteorological fields in complex coastal area is studied using RAMS. Resolutions of topography and land use data are very important to numerical modeling, because high resolution data can reflect correct terrain height and detail characteristics of the surface. Especially, in complex coastal region such as Gwangyang area, southern area in Korean Peninsula, high resolution topography and land use data are indispensable for accurate modeling results. This study investigated the effect of resolutions of terrain data using SRTM with 3 second resolution topography and KLU with 1 second resolution land use data. Case HR was the experiment using high resolution data, whereas Case LR used low resolution data. In Case HR, computed surface temperature was higher than Case LR along the coastline and wind speed was $1{\sim}2m/s$ weaker than Case LR. Time series of temperature and wind speed indicated great agreement with the observation data. Moreover, Case HR indicated outstanding results on statistical analysis such as regression, root mean square error, index of agreement.

  • The purpose of this study is to tender as the basic data for practice of environment on the consciousness and practice of life environment on technical teacher in middle school and colleage students. For this purpose, the data were collected by using questionnaire distributed to 102 technical teacher in middle school and 103 male colleage students in Jan. and Aug., 2000. The major findings of this research are as follows; 1. It was found that the teachers had consciousness in industrial environment pollution but the students has the causes of house or car. All of the subjects set to the environment information through T.V. programs and the efficacy is highest. Also the teachers set to the environment information through environmental organization and books. The teachers had concern of high level and higher than the students on the life environment. Specially the awareness of life environment was upper to the average and higher than students. 2. The assessments of the earth life environment was 69.17(M), the oceanic environment was highest and water environment was lower. The assessments of the Korea life environment was 60.67(M) were lower than the assessments of the earth life environment, all items were lower than earth lie environment. Generally leachers has positive assessments to earth and Korea life environment than male students. 3. The teachers have high practice apparence on the life environment than the students. Also the teachers had upper to the average on the practice degree, and the practice degree lower than practice awarences. But all items on practices degree was higher than student's.
